Communications And 'Forestructures' At The Geological Intersection Of Caves And Subsurface Water Flow: Hermeneutics And Parochialism, Lee J. Florea, H. L. Vacher
Communications And 'Forestructures' At The Geological Intersection Of Caves And Subsurface Water Flow: Hermeneutics And Parochialism, Lee J. Florea, H. L. Vacher
Geology Faculty Publications
The direction of cave and karst science throughout its history has been partly determined by communication—or, more commonly, the lack of communication—between non-scientist cavers and non-caving physical geologists writing about karst. Within each community, advancement of ‘cave awareness’ occurred through a hermeneutic circle in which ‘forestructures’ guided progress. One result was regionalism of speleo-genetic theories developed within karst science because of the weight of evidence placed upon local or regional observations. Many speleogenetic theories of the mid-1900s suffer from this parochialism, failing to take into account findings from karst of different geologic settings. During the past half-century, the accumulated worldwide …
Effect Of Ejaculation Frequency On Spermatozoa Survival In Diluted Semen From Pleven Blackhead Rams, Stanimir Yotov, Ivan Fasulkov, Nasko Vassilev
Effect Of Ejaculation Frequency On Spermatozoa Survival In Diluted Semen From Pleven Blackhead Rams, Stanimir Yotov, Ivan Fasulkov, Nasko Vassilev
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The effect of ejaculation frequency on spermatozoa survival in diluted Pleven Blackhead ram semen was investigated. Thirty-two ejaculates were examined. From each ram 4 ejaculates were collected at 10-min intervals in the morning and in the afternoon. Semen parameters, namely, color, density, transparency, volume, concentration, motility, and abnormal sperm, for each ejaculate were determined. The sperm motility was assessed from the moment of dilution up to 60 min at 10-min intervals, then again at 90 min and 120 min. The semen characteristics were determined by means of "Motic Image Plus" equipment and the data were processed statistically. Sperm volume and …
Growth And Developmental Plasticity Of Chaoborus Americanus Populations, Rachel Moran
Growth And Developmental Plasticity Of Chaoborus Americanus Populations, Rachel Moran
Honors Capstones
The larval stage of the phantom midge Chaoborus americanus (Chaoboridae) is an important predator on zooplankton in temperate, fishless ponds. Chaoborus have distinct development stages typical of holometabolous insects: egg, larva (four larval instars), pupa, and adult. Temperature and food levels can significantly affect development rates in insects. The purpose of this study was: (1) to compare developmental patterns of populations of C. americanus from different latitudes (northern Wisconsin, northern Illinois), which experience different annual temperature regimes; and (2) to construct a mathematical model to predict larval development patterns (Developmental Model) and another to predict abundance patterns for C. americanus …
The Effects Of A Serious Game On Learning, Gary Timmins
The Effects Of A Serious Game On Learning, Gary Timmins
Honors Capstones
This study tested the hypothesis that video game attributes (e.g., points, competition, pedagogical agents) affect learning and engagement in a computerized learning environment. Thirty-two undergraduate psychology students were randomly assigned to two computerized learning environments meant to teach aspects of scientific inquiry (e.g., the need for control groups). Both groups read, critiqued and identified flaws in short descriptions of research. One group used a program that simulates a video game environment while the other used a traditional computer-assisted instructional format. Both conditions were given a pre-test and post-test. An interaction between time of test and the game was found, indicating …
Therapeutics For Coral Bleaching: Insight From A Novel Triterpenoid Metabolite, Hilary L. Coulombe
Therapeutics For Coral Bleaching: Insight From A Novel Triterpenoid Metabolite, Hilary L. Coulombe
Honors Capstones
The focus of the work will be to use therapeutics try to fix and/or prevent coral bleaching. Bleaching is when the coral releases its colored zoozanthellae symbionts, causing a white color appearance. This is a stress response for the coral and is caused mainly by an increase in temperature. This is a problem because once coral bleaching starts it can continue even without the presence of the stressors. If the coral does manage to survive this period it will take a long time for the symbionts to grow back to their original proportions in the coral. This topic is of …

Increasing Organ Donation In Ireland : Social Marketing And Infrastructural Improvements., Ronan O'Sullivan
Theses
There were over 600 patients on the organ waiting list in Ireland in November 2010. This is a substantial increase on the 414 patients on the waiting list in 2008. Ireland also witnessed a dramatic decline in the number of donors from 90 donors in 2009 to 58 donors in 2010. This thesis focuses on investigating the current state of organ donation in the Republic of Ireland, with the eventual goal of recommending alterations to improve the system. In depth- interviews were conducted with eleven leading personnel from the fields of organ donation and social marketing in Ireland as well …
Teaching English Language Learners In Mainstream Science Classrooms: Teacher Practice And Educational Opportunity, Carlotta Dorothy Schroeder
Teaching English Language Learners In Mainstream Science Classrooms: Teacher Practice And Educational Opportunity, Carlotta Dorothy Schroeder
Wayne State University Dissertations
Equal educational opportunity for English language learners (ELLs) has been a goal of the public educational system in the United States. Language policy reforms have increasedaccountability in order for schools to improve student achievement and measure the progress of ELLs. The No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) requires assessment and accountability. In this study, the number of ELLs has increased significantly at the high school level and school district as a whole.
Along with the changing demographics, the findings reveal a district-wide policy of equalizing educational opportunity through equal treatment. Language policies provide critical decisions about how to measure what …
Investigation Of Protein-Protein Interaction Using Atomic Force Microscopy, Essa Yousef Mayyas
Investigation Of Protein-Protein Interaction Using Atomic Force Microscopy, Essa Yousef Mayyas
Wayne State University Dissertations
Single-molecule approaches to measuring the kinetics of protein dissociation have the advantage that measurements can be performed in native environments, such as living cells, where concentrations of target molecules may be quite low. In addition, single molecule approaches allow for the measurement of variances in protein kinetics, thus providing a more complete picture of protein kinetics than ensemble techniques which typically only provide averages.
In our laboratories, we use the force spectroscopy (FS) technique to study protein binding and dissociation. FS measures the strength of the protein molecules bond with high resolution down to pico-Newton either on the surface of …
Cam Kinase Regulation Of Akt And Bad In Prostate Cancer Cells, John M. Schmitt, Samantha F. Smith
Cam Kinase Regulation Of Akt And Bad In Prostate Cancer Cells, John M. Schmitt, Samantha F. Smith
Faculty Publications - Department of Biological & Molecular Science
Abstract AKT and its substrate BAD promote prostate cancer cell survival. Agonists, such as carbachol, and hormones that increase intracellular calcium concentration can activate AKT leading to cancer cell survival. LNCaP prostate cancer cells express the carbachol-sensitive M3-subtype of GPCR’s that increase intracellular calcium and activate the family of Ca2+/Calmodulin-dependent Protein Kinases (CaM Ks). One type of CaM Kinase, CaM Kinase Kinase (CaM KK), directly phosphorylates AKT on threonine 308. AKT phosphorylation and activation can enhance cell survival through phosphorylation BAD protein and the subsequent blockade of caspase activation. Our goals were to examine the mechanism of carbachol activation of …
Trp Channel Regulation Of Estrogen Signaling, John M. Schmitt, Jessica N. Magill
Trp Channel Regulation Of Estrogen Signaling, John M. Schmitt, Jessica N. Magill
Faculty Publications - Department of Biological & Molecular Science
Abstract Calcium regulates numerous cell functions including growth and development. Calcium can enter cells through transient receptor potential channels (TRPCs). Previous studies in MCF-7 cells have suggested that the expression of one particular TRPC, TRPC6, correlates with cell transformation and disease progression. Calcium has several cellular targets including the Calcium/Calmodulin-dependent protein kinases (CaM Ks) and ERK. Previous work has shown that estrogen (E2) may utilize CaM Ks and ERK to promote breast cancer cell proliferation, however the possible involvement of TRPCs in this pathway is currently unknown. Our objective was to understand which E2 receptor is used in our system …

Tintle, Hugues Aschard, Inchi Hu, Nora Nock, Haitian Wang, Elizabeth Pugh
Faculty Work Comprehensive List
As part of Genetic Analysis Workshop 17 (GAW17), our group considered the application of novel and standard approaches to the analysis of genotype-phenotype association in next-generation sequencing data. Our group identified a major issue in the analysis of the GAW17 next-generation sequencing data: type I error and false-positive report probability rates higher than those expected based on empirical type I error levels (as high as 90%). Two main causes emerged: population stratification and long-range correlation (gametic phase disequilibrium) between rare variants. Population stratification was expected because of the diverse sample. Correlation between rare variants was attributable to both random causes …

Patients' Perspectives On Discussing Complementary And Alternative Medicine Therapies With Conventional Doctors, Deborah A. Mcninch
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Currently, little is known about patients' perceptions and beliefs in discussing complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) with their conventional medical (CM) doctor. The purpose of this descriptive research was to show whether CAM-using patients have an interest in discussing CAM treatments with their CM doctor for comprehensive care as described by the health belief model (HBM) constructs of perceived susceptibility, perceived seriousness, and perceived benefits of taking action. A sample of 165 participants age 18 or older from 2 chiropractic clinics in the midwestern United States completed a Likert-scaled survey. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multiple regression …

Association Between Vegan, Vegetarian, And Omnivorous Diets And Overweight And Obesity, Daniel Sullivan
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Overweight and obesity and associated health risks have become epidemic in several regions around the world. Numerous studies have addressed the dietary habits of vegetarians and vegans in terms of disease prevention and nutritional deficiencies but the relationship between overweight and obesity and the demographic, psychosocial, lifestyle, and dietary intake of omnivores, vegetarians, and vegans has received less attention. Guided by the social-ecological model, this study included a cross-sectional, quantitative, anonymous web-based survey to obtain dietary information on omnivores, vegetarians, and vegans. Vegans demonstrated a significantly lower mean and median body mass index ( p=0.00) than omnivores, semi-vegetarians, and vegetarians. …

The Relationship Among Emotional Intelligence And Leadership Styles Of Law Enforcement Executives, Gregory, Jr. Campbell
The Relationship Among Emotional Intelligence And Leadership Styles Of Law Enforcement Executives, Gregory, Jr. Campbell
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Policing in the 21st century is becoming more complex and dynamic as law enforcement executives deal with operational, political, and economic challenges. Organizational theory and research indicate positive relationships among emotional intelligence (EI), leadership effectiveness, leadership styles, and employee outcomes. But these relationships have not been investigated in law enforcement organizations. The purpose of this quantitative study was to fill this knowledge gap by exploring the above relationships in a sample of law enforcement executives. Situational leadership theory, full range leadership model, and trait EI theory comprised the theoretical framework for this study. Data were collected from 139 law enforcement …

Effects Of A Web-Based Decision Aid On African American Men's Prostate Screening Knowledge And Behavior, Beverly Layton
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
African American men have the highest prostate cancer occurrence and deaths of any population, yet many are unaware of screening opportunities or prognoses if diagnosed with the disease. The focus of this study was to learn whether a web-based prostate health education decision aid would increase prostate cancer knowledge, declared intention to be screened, and the likelihood of scheduling a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test. The transtheoretical model of behavior change served as the theoretical framework for the study to assess readiness to adopt new behaviors. A total of 128 African American men between the ages of 40--65 without a history …
