Dynamic Response Of Brain Subjected To Blast Loadings: Influence Of Frequency Ranges, Mehdi S. Chafi, Shailesh G. Ganpule, Linxia Gu, Namas Chandra

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Blast wave induced a frequency spectrum and large deformation of the brain tissue. In this study, new material parameters for the brain material are determined from the experimental data pertaining to these large strain amplitudes and wide frequencies ranging (from 0.01 Hz to 10 MHz) using genetic algorithms. Both hyperelastic and viscoelastic behavior of the brain are implemented into 2D finite element models and the dynamic responses of brain are evaluated. The head, composed of triple layers of the skull, including two cortical layers and a middle dipole sponge-like layer, the dura, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), the pia mater and the …

Functional Hak/Kup/Kt-Like Potassium Transporter Encoded By Chlorella Viruses, Timo Greiner, José Ramos, Maria C. Alvarez, James Gurnon, Ming Kang, James L. Van Etten, Anna Moroni, Gerhard Thiel Jan 2011

Functional Hak/Kup/Kt-Like Potassium Transporter Encoded By Chlorella Viruses, Timo Greiner, José Ramos, Maria C. Alvarez, James Gurnon, Ming Kang, James L. Van Etten, Anna Moroni, Gerhard Thiel

James Van Etten Publications

Chlorella viruses are a source of interesting membrane transport proteins. Here we examine a putative K+ transporter encoded by virus FR483 and related chlorella viruses. The protein shares sequence and structural features with HAK/KUP/KT-like K+ transporters from plants, bacteria and fungi. Yeast complementation assays and Rb+ uptake experiments show that the viral protein, termed HAKCV (high-affinity K+ transporter of chlorella virus), is functional, with transport characteristics that are similar to those of known K+ transporters. Expression studies revealed that the protein is expressed as an early gene during viral replication, and proteomics data indicate that it is not packaged in …

The Comparability Of Bioassessments: A Review Of Conceptual And Methodological Issues, Y. Cao, Charles P. Hawkins Jan 2011

The Comparability Of Bioassessments: A Review Of Conceptual And Methodological Issues, Y. Cao, Charles P. Hawkins

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

Differences in the raw data used in bioassessments and choices regarding how those data are analyzed and summarized can affect inferences regarding the status of ecological resources and, thus, the degree to which we can trust individual ecological assessments, compare assessments across different programs and regions, or share data when developing or refining new endpoint indices. Progress in addressing these issues has been hindered by lack of consensus regarding what a general definition of comparability should be in the context of bioassessments and what measures of comparability are appropriate for ecological data. In this paper, we review the state of …

Executive Control And Dimensions Of Problem Behaviors In Preschool Children, Kimberly A. Espy, Tiffany Sheffield, Sandra A. Wiebe, Caron A. C. Clark, Matthew J. Moehr

Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory: Faculty Publications

Background: Despite the widespread recognition of the importance of executive control (EC) in externalizing psychopathology, the relation between EC and problem behavior has not been well characterized, particularly in typically developing preschoolers.
Method: Using the sample, battery of laboratory tasks, and latent variable modeling methods described in Wiebe, Espy, and Charak (2008), systematic latent dimensions of parent-rated problem behavior, measured by integrating scales from developmental and clinical traditions, were determined empirically, and then were related to EC.
Results:
Substantial relations between EC and problem behaviors were revealed by extracting the common variance of interest and eliminating extraneous variance, which were …

Quantification Of Agricultural Drought For Effective Drought Mitigation And Preparedness: Key Issues And Challenges, Donald A. Wilhite

National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications

The goal of the WMO Expert Meeting on Agricultural Drought Indices was to move forward in the selection of a single drought index that would be used worldwide in the assessment of agricultural drought and its severity. This chapter discusses the challenges in identifying a single index to accomplish this task. Given the complexities of drought and its diverse sectoral impacts, this is a formidable task. However, highlighting the key issues and challenges and recognizing a process or methodology to move the science community forward to achieve aspects of this goal would be a critical step forward. As the next …

Measuring Scholarly Metrics, Gordon R. Mitchell, Scott Church, Travis Bartosh, Getachew Dinku Godana, Rachel Stohr, Sarah Jones, Adam Knowlton

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

The following chapters explore six contemporary metrics of scholarly authority (Journal Impact Factor, Web of Science citations, h-index, SCImago, article download usage data, university press book publication), considering each metric’s strengths and weaknesses as measurement tools, and speculating on the consequences their widespread utilization of each might mean for the field of Communication, the academy, and society. Leaving the task of a systematic meta-analysis of scholarly metrics for another day, this report instead is designed to work as an entry point for readers interested in how the advent of new digital measurement tools carry potential to compete with traditional gold …

Improving Urban Ecology Bringing Native Back Home, Leo Ferretti Jan 2011

Improving Urban Ecology Bringing Native Back Home, Leo Ferretti

Theses & ETDs

The urban environment is the new frontier for ecological improvement. Urban planting creates a richer ecosystem, enhances biodiversity, improves mental health, and alleviates some of the environmental externalities generated by urban areas (including pollution, runoff and heat island effects). This thesis examines the importance of improving city ecology and explores strategies by which to enact these improvements. Today, new measures-- such as restoration, reforestation, reconciliation and building green roofs-- must be taken to foster urban biodiversity. Developers often overlook the advantages of well-rounded planting programs due to their cost, but education can reverse this trend. Urban environmental research suggests that …

Rage Against The Form Resisiting Oppressive Gender Identity In The Work Of Carson Mccullers, Toni Morrison And Jeffrey Eugenides, Chelsee Payne Jan 2011

Rage Against The Form Resisiting Oppressive Gender Identity In The Work Of Carson Mccullers, Toni Morrison And Jeffrey Eugenides, Chelsee Payne

Theses & ETDs

The thesis investigates specific ideas of gendered identity in three separate periods and three separate regions in the United States. It focuses on the way gendered identity is imagined and resisted in Carson McCullerss The Ballad of Sad Caf, Toni Morrisons The Bluest Eye and Jeffrey Eugenidess Middlesex. I analyze how these concepts are created and enforced in society and through literary forms. Chapter one examines Carson McCullerss play with the Southern female ideal, circa mid-twentieth century and her rewriting of the ballad form. McCullers complicates the binary between masculine and feminine in the character of Miss Amelia. Chapter two …

Pay Attention To Biophilia It's In The Flow, Ashley King Jan 2011

Pay Attention To Biophilia It's In The Flow, Ashley King

Theses & ETDs

This study sought to explore the possible relationship between two theories addressing psychological health: Wilsons Biophilia Hypothesis and Csikszentmihalyis Flow. Undergraduate college students played Tetris before viewing either a nature video or a built environment video. After the video, participants completed another game of Tetris and a shortened version of the Flow State Scale. It was hypothesized that contact with nature would restore attention capacity and facilitate the flow experience, leading to a higher level of improvement from pre-test to post-test and also higher scores on the FSS in the nature condition than in the built environment condition. As expected, …

Exogenous Expression Of Dna Pilot Protein H With Mutated Colied-Coil Domains Inhibits Bacteriophage ?X174, Lindsey Young Jan 2011

Exogenous Expression Of Dna Pilot Protein H With Mutated Colied-Coil Domains Inhibits Bacteriophage ?X174, Lindsey Young

Theses & ETDs

The DNA pilot protein H of bacteriophage ?X174 is known to pilot the viral genome into the host organism, Escherichia coli. Recent evidence suggests the DNA pilot protein is also involved in protein biosynthesis. Though the structure of the DNA pilot protein is unknown, it is predicted by bioinformatics to have an N-terminal domain, four coiled-coil domains, and two DNA binding sites. The sequence of the DNA pilot protein was cloned with mutations that disrupted coils 1 and 4 of the protein. Another set of mutants contained an N-terminal deletion starting at residue 142 in addition to the mutations that …

Candy Land, Brittney Champagne Jan 2011

Candy Land, Brittney Champagne

Theses & ETDs

Sweetness functions as a symbolic prop for human desire. My artwork questions the cost of this desire, troubling what can and should be consumed, while negotiating the environmental and social histories of human desire for sugar. This project generates a subjective history for the strange, perhaps unnatural, commodities that people desire, through which I aim to plant them more firmly into the natural world from which they have been separated by so much plastic, foil, and ornament.

Olfactory Communication And Indivdual Recognition In Eulemur Mongoz, The Mongoose Lemur, Katherine Smith Jan 2011

Olfactory Communication And Indivdual Recognition In Eulemur Mongoz, The Mongoose Lemur, Katherine Smith

Theses & ETDs

Olfactory communication is a major aspect in lemur biology and behavior. Since it was first studied, research and experiments have focused on Lemur catta, the ring-tailed lemur. The purpose of this thesis was to begin to bridge the information gap that existed between L. catta and most other lemurs, by trying to determine whether Eulemur mongoz, the mongoose lemur, could distinguish between individuals based solely on olfactory communication. A habituation/dishabituation experiment was done using a total of eight E. mongoz from the Lemur Conservation Foundation in Myakka City, Florida. Pads that were marked with a conspecifics scent were presented in …

Herta Muller's Barefoot February A Translation, Adam Bresnahan Jan 2011

Herta Muller's Barefoot February A Translation, Adam Bresnahan

Theses & ETDs

This thesis consists of three major components. The primary component is a translation of Herta Mller's collection of short stories, Barfiger Februar, published in 1987 upon her migration from Transylvania to Berlin. These stories overarching narrative details the experience of migration, the writer's self-consciousness in two political environs, and the contradictions that arise out of the comparison of these environs. The historical content of the stories is drawn from the author's life, as well as from the history of Romania, and German-speaking Transylvania in particular, after the Second World War. The first chapter discusses the historical background of post-World War …

Songs Of The Mountains, Songs Of Resistance A Study Of Protest Music Against "King Coal" In Southern Appalachia, Historically And Today, Sara Henry Jan 2011

Songs Of The Mountains, Songs Of Resistance A Study Of Protest Music Against "King Coal" In Southern Appalachia, Historically And Today, Sara Henry

Theses & ETDs

The focus of this project has been compiling a collection of music about mountaintop removal coal mining and the history of coal mining in Southern Appalachia. The songs are ballads, folk, bluegrass, and old time songs of the past and present. Some songs already focused on this important environmental and social justice issue, and others were changed lyrically to encompass this subject. The practice of changing lyrics to suit a new cause has been common in the history of folk music in America. For example, in Mark Allan Jacksons Prophet Singer, he spends part of a chapter outlining the ways …

Population Connectivity Of The Acropra Palmata On Cayos Cochinos, Honduras, Alberto Fenix Jan 2011

Population Connectivity Of The Acropra Palmata On Cayos Cochinos, Honduras, Alberto Fenix

Theses & ETDs

Population connectivity is an underlying concept in studies for conservation biology, marine organism biodiversity, population dynamics, marine preserve area (MPA) and fisheries management and design. Recently, the understanding of population connectivity has grown significantly, but the consensus is that more empirical data are needed to support theoretical studies and models currently in use. Gathering data for population connectivity is a monumental task because it spans through varying spatial and temporal scales requiring the collaboration of multiple disciplines of the physical sciences, even if the focus is just one marine organism. An iterative process approach has also been recommended wherein theoretical …

Mathematical Models In Population Dynamics, Alexander Salisbury Jan 2011

Mathematical Models In Population Dynamics, Alexander Salisbury

Theses & ETDs

Population dynamics studies the changes in size and composition of populations through time, as well as the biotic and abiotic factors influencing those changes. For the past few centuries, ordinary differential equations (ODEs) have served well as models of both single-species and multispecies population dynamics. In this study, we provide a mathematical framework for ODE model analysis and an outline of the historical context surrounding mathematical population modeling. Upon this foundation, we pursue a piecemeal construction of ODE models beginning with the simplest one-dimensional models and working up in complexity into two-dimensional systems. Each modeling step is complimented with mathematical …

In Defense Of Jewish Manhood Monotheism, Circumcision, And Gender In FreudS Construction Of Jewish Identity, Jeremy Zorn Jan 2011

In Defense Of Jewish Manhood Monotheism, Circumcision, And Gender In FreudS Construction Of Jewish Identity, Jeremy Zorn

Theses & ETDs

This thesis argues that the parallel discourses Freud develops surrounding monotheism and circumcision, in Moses and Monotheism, seek to overcome anti-Semitic perceptions of Jewish effeminacyperceptions which Freud, himself, internalized to a great extent. While Freuds treatment of monotheism demonstrates his belief in an essential Jewish affinity for male-coded spirituality over female-coded sensuality, his understanding of circumcision proves to be more problematic. Having established the theoretical connection of circumcision, castration, and effeminacy in a prior work, Freud attempts to reconfigure the meaning of circumcision in Moses and Monotheism. Despite his effort to unite his theory of circumcision with his idealization of …

Just Keeping Swimming A Review Of The Biological And Social Components Of Teleost Fish Shoaling, Stuart Strock Jan 2011

Just Keeping Swimming A Review Of The Biological And Social Components Of Teleost Fish Shoaling, Stuart Strock

Theses & ETDs

Shoaling is a very common behavior among fish species; approximately 50% of all fish species engage in schooling behavior at one or more stages of their life. Extensive research has investigated the nature of this behavior over the past century, but the past 40 years have offered considerable progress in the understanding the evolutionary, sensory and social components of shoaling behavior. This comprehensive review encompasses a wide spectrum of schooling research from the last half century to the present. It begins with an analysis of the evolutionary selection pressures acting for or against the continued expression of shoaling behavior in …

Grounded Ideologies The Feeling Of Pwer And System-Justification, Timothy Nest Jan 2011

Grounded Ideologies The Feeling Of Pwer And System-Justification, Timothy Nest

Theses & ETDs

Contrary to traditional approaches in the psychological study of group behavior, System-justification theory has argued that social actors are not only motivated to sustain their local social affiliations, relevant group identifications, and ingroup relevant belief systems, but also possess a basic motivation to preserve and maintain dominant social structures through system-affirming ideologies. Since the rise in popularity of the Implicit association test (IAT), System justification theory has shown that socially marginalized group members or those in positions of limited social power, tend to exhibit high levels of in-group derogation and out-group favoritism compared to members of dominant, or high-status social …

Temporal Patterns Of Burrow Use By Gopher Tortoises (Gophexus Polyphemus) At The Ordway-Swisher Biological Station, Forest Hayes Jan 2011

Temporal Patterns Of Burrow Use By Gopher Tortoises (Gophexus Polyphemus) At The Ordway-Swisher Biological Station, Forest Hayes

Theses & ETDs

The gopher tortoise (Gopherus polyphemus) is prominent in sandhill communities of the southeastern United States and creates burrows that are used for shelter or habitat by hundreds of species. Gopher tortoises are difficult to monitor due to their reclusive nature. Infrared-triggered digital cameras allow for comprehensive monitoring of gopher tortoise burrow activity. During the summers of 2009 and 2010, six infrared-triggered camera traps were used to monitor gopher tortoise activity at burrow entrances. These cameras were used to monitor gopher tortoise burrows in order to ascertain their temporal activity patterns. In the 2010 study cameras were split between habitats treated …

Transfiguration, Carmen Guillen-Casal Jan 2011

Transfiguration, Carmen Guillen-Casal

Theses & ETDs

This thesis explores the disparities between our ideals of beauty and imperfect bodies, using painting as a vehicle to de-familiarize ourselves with these flaws. Like artists Jenny Saville, John Coplans and Lisa Yuskavage, I hope to diversify views of bodies and confuse the spaces that they define through abstraction. I n doing so, I encourage the viewer to examine expanses of flesh in order to decode the culturally prescribed values which the viewer has been assigned. The subject volunteers a formerly concealed body and in doing so reclaims agency. This agency over their own bodies is garnered where the lines …

Inflamation And Depression, Elena Jeliazkova Jan 2011

Inflamation And Depression, Elena Jeliazkova

Theses & ETDs

Over a century ago, Professor Julius Wagner von Jauregg received the Nobel Prize for his work on the immunological implications of psychiatry. In the past twenty years, Psychoneuroimmunology has produced novel research on the immunological implications of psychiatric disorders, such as depression. Established by the American Psychiatric Association, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, defines the depression as a depressed mood and loss of interest, insomnia or hypersomnia, fatigue, inability to concentrate, suicidality, psychomotor retardation and weight change. While no clear etiological explanation has been discovered, the pathophysiology of depression involves neurotransmitter imbalance. This review investigates the bidirectional …

Feeding Behavior Of Wild Vervet Monkeys In Loskop Dam Nature Preserve, Katherine Dean Jan 2011

Feeding Behavior Of Wild Vervet Monkeys In Loskop Dam Nature Preserve, Katherine Dean

Theses & ETDs

Studying the feeding behavior of nonhuman primates in the wild leads to a greater understanding of their behavioral ecology and has important implications for conservation. In this thesis, I documented the feeding behavior of three groups of wild vervet monkeys in Loskop Dam Nature Reserve, Mmpumalanga, South Africa from October 2009 to January 2010. I compared the diet of 51 individuals to their age, sex, rank, and endoparasitic richness. I found no significant correlations between diet and age, sex, and rank. There were significant positive correlations between feeding and endoparasites, suggesting that specific plant species are vehicles for parasites. I …

Writing The Animal, Ericka Miller Jan 2011

Writing The Animal, Ericka Miller

Theses & ETDs

In this thesis, I demonstrate the ways in which contemporary American fiction by women uses the animal as both a literal figure and a concept. Focusing on Amy Hempel, Alice Walker, and Octavia Butler, I examine how they link their portrayal of animals to the historical, current, and potential experiences of women: these writers depict cultures whose ideologies, social expectations, ethics, and hierarchies of value prove sexist and "speciesist." First I describe historical trends in the ways that representations of animalsand animality have been used in relation to women, often to justify oppression. The advent of evolutionary discourse in the …

"The Woman's Work" Constructions Of The Domestic In The Works Of Four Prose Poets, Joslyn Persh Jan 2011

"The Woman's Work" Constructions Of The Domestic In The Works Of Four Prose Poets, Joslyn Persh

Theses & ETDs

Since its popularization by Charles Baudelaire in the mid-1800s with his Le Spleen de Paris or Petits Pomes en Prose, prose poetry has been closely tied to the everyday. This thesis examines the relationship between prose poetry and domesticity and explores how four modern prose poetsGertrude Stein, Francis Ponge, Russell Edson, and Charles Simicare approaching themes of domestic life in their work. In the first chapter, I explore the nature of prose poetry in an effort to explain the distinction between prose poetry and its constituent parts, poetry and prose. Similarly, the nature of domesticity is addressed so one might …

Making Monsters Constructions Of Monstrosity In Gothic Literature, Nicole Robinson Jan 2011

Making Monsters Constructions Of Monstrosity In Gothic Literature, Nicole Robinson

Theses & ETDs

This thesis discusses two different constructions of monstrosity in British Gothic literature through a close reading of texts that range from 1796 to 1897. This thesis finds that in these texts monstrosity is something that can be taught, caught like an infection, or be the product of uncontrolled sexuality. The two discussions of monstrosity intersect in their concern with the dissolution or perversion of the family and society. The first chapter discusses monstrosity as insanity in Mathew Lewis's The Monk and James Hogg's The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner. These novels figure human men who are so …

Where Whiskey Is For Drinking And Water Is For Cooperating Over. An Application Of The Institutional Analysis And Development Framework To The Struggle Over Pacific Northwest Water Allocation., Michael J. Dexter Jan 2011

Where Whiskey Is For Drinking And Water Is For Cooperating Over. An Application Of The Institutional Analysis And Development Framework To The Struggle Over Pacific Northwest Water Allocation., Michael J. Dexter

Theses & ETDs

The allocation of water among multiple users has generated several water conflicts or "water wars" in the Western United States. The failure to cooperate over water resources has led many to criticize the property rights system in place under the doctrine of prior appropriation. However, such arguments neglect to consider federal recognition of tribal and environmental rights as a legitimization of stakeholders. The recognition of resource rights to multiple actors can facilitate a cooperative arrangement over water allocation. Through applying the Institutional Analysis and Development framework to four Pacific Northwest watersheds, this thesis argues that the primacy of hydropower interests …

Dancing Under The Moonlight A Mathematecal Modeling Approach To Foraging Octracod, John Correa Jan 2011

Dancing Under The Moonlight A Mathematecal Modeling Approach To Foraging Octracod, John Correa

Theses & ETDs

Ostracods are a widespread crustacean that in certain species produce bioluminescence and have a relationship with cycles of the moon. By setting traps to sample the foraging population, and finding the rate of foraging, I investigate the relationship between the lunar cycle and ostracod foraging activity, using experimental data collected at Cayos Cochinos, Honduras from July 15 to July 28 in 2010. I observed that there is a relatively strong correlation between the lunar cycle and ostracod foraging activity. A mathematical model is developed to describe this relationship further. With the model, I am able to describe how the lunar …
