Can Social Workers Recognize Depression In The Elderly?, Teresa Ramon, Monica Maria Wettengel
Can Social Workers Recognize Depression In The Elderly?, Teresa Ramon, Monica Maria Wettengel
Theses Digitization Project
The purpose of this study is to explore whether social workers can recognize depression in the elderly. The elderly who are experiencing depression usually do not seek treatment from mental health professionals. Instead they go to primary care personnel in medical settings. Yet, social workers are employed in medical settings and are part of the primary care personnel. But, often the medical and/or mental health communities' lack of recognition of late life depression results from the attitude that old age is innately a downward spiral into limitations, weakness, helplessness, and burdensome existence.

Medial Prefrontal Modulation Of The Nucleus Basalis Magnocellularis During Attention-Dependent Learning, Venuz Yadira Greenfield
Theses Digitization Project
The nucleus basalis magnocellularis (NBM) sends cholinergic projections to the neocortex. While NBM activation of the neocortex regulates attention and contributes to memory formation, the mechanisms controlling NBM activity during attention-dependent learning are not well understood. The current experiment tested the hypothesis that the mPFC is critically involved in modulating NBM activity during attention-dependent learning in rats. A total of 80 male Long-Evans rats were purchased from a commerical research animal vendor. Rats were randomly assigned to one of four controlled groups. The procedures were done by an animal technician and veterinarian in the CSUSB Social and Behavioral Science vivarium …

Collisional Transfer Of Population And Orientation In Nak, Seth T. Ashman, C. M. Wolfe, J. Bai, B. Beser, E. H. Ahmed, A. M. Lyyra, J. Huennekens
Engineering & Physics Faculty Publications
Collisional satellite lines with |ΔJ| ≤ 58 have been identified in recent polarization spectroscopy V-type optical–optical double resonance (OODR) excitation spectra of the Rb2 molecule [H. Salami et al., Phys. Rev.A80, 022515 (2009)]. Observation of these satellite lines clearly requires a transfer of population from the rotational level directly excited by the pump laser to a neighboring level in a collision of the molecule with an atomic perturber. However to be observed in polarization spectroscopy, the collision must also partially preserve the angular momentum orientation, which is at least somewhat surprising given the extremely large values of …

Her Choice, Her Problem: How Having A Choice Can Diminish Family Solidarity, Richard Stith
Her Choice, Her Problem: How Having A Choice Can Diminish Family Solidarity, Richard Stith
Law Faculty Publications
This Article explores a little-noticed dimension of abortion and assisted suicide (or voluntary euthanasia): how choosing to reject those options can have a negative impact on the legally authorized choosers. Women who refuse abortion may be blamed for their choice by boyfriends, neighbors, employers, and others. Similarly, infirm or dying persons may find family and other caregivers upset by their refusal to agree to assisted suicide when voluntary death seems the sensible option. Finally, the author questions whether a life chosen as an option can ever have the dignity of a life simply accepted, i.e., whether the child a mother …

Ecological Strategies In California Chaparral: Interacting Effects Of Soils, Climate, And Fire On Specific Leaf Area, Brian Anacker, Nishanta Rajakaruna, David D. Ackerly, Susan Harrison, Jon Keeley, Michael Vasey
Biological Sciences
Background: High values of specific leaf area (SLA) are generally associated with high maximal growth rates in resource-rich conditions, such as mesic climates and fertile soils. However, fire may complicate this relationship since its frequency varies with both climate and soil fertility, and fire frequency selects for regeneration strategies (resprouting versus seeding) that are not independent of resource-acquisition strategies. Shared ancestry is also expected to affect the distribution of resource-use and regeneration traits.
Aims: We examined climate, soil, and fire as drivers of community-level variation in a key functional trait, SLA, in chaparral in California.
Methods: We quantified the phylogenetic, …

Metaphors Of The Market Economy And The Learning Community, Ben Sippola
Kristi Schultz Broughton Liberal Arts Essay Contest
2011 Topic: Education as Commodity: Liberal Arts Education in the Consumer Age
Contemporary higher education is increasingly dominated by the realities and metaphors of the market economy. Education is an investment or a product. Students are consumers. Admissions counselors are salespeople and professors deliver their customers goods and services. Write an essay about this mindset and how it has affected your education. Have your attitudes towards the commoditization of education changed during your time at Butler? Fundamentally, how can or should liberal arts education fit within this worldview?

Landfill Temperatures Under Variable Decomposition Conditions, Nazli Yesiller, James L. Hanson, H. Yoshida
Civil and Environmental Engineering
This study was conducted to evaluate temperature, gas, and leachate data at two landfills in similar climatic regions (Detroit, Michigan, USA and Asahikawa, Hokkaido, Japan) to determine the interrelations between heat production and resulting waste temperatures and gas and leachate levels in landfills under variable decomposition conditions. Significant temperature increases occurred under long-term anaerobic conditions. Stable elevated temperatures under anaerobic conditions were observed for wastes at central locations. Seasonal fluctuations in both temperature and gas existed at shallow depths and near perimeter locations. Placement of an overfill of fresh wastes over old wastes affected temperatures, yet did not significantly influence …
