Rebuilding Character: The Practices Of Positive Youth Development Teachers In A Youth Correctional Setting, Edward Anthony Cope
Rebuilding Character: The Practices Of Positive Youth Development Teachers In A Youth Correctional Setting, Edward Anthony Cope
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
There is a worldwide call for alternatives to current systems focused on restorative justice. The United States currently has a process but no plan in implementing effective programs for rehabilitating youth offenders. For many years, the prevailing idea in youth corrections has been that nothing works as studies continued to have difficulty pinpointing effective programs. Yet, over the last several decades, prison populations have risen dramatically, as have penal housing costs.
Positive Youth Development (PYD) offers a different framework focused on developing youth assets and promoting positive adolescent development. Derived from research in behavioral sciences, PYD programs promote the development …
Functional Activation Of Cartilaginous Fish Melanocortin Receptors, Christina Lee Reinick
Functional Activation Of Cartilaginous Fish Melanocortin Receptors, Christina Lee Reinick
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The evolution of the melanocortin receptor (MCR) gene family has been dictated by two genome duplication events (2R hypothesis). The gnathostomes are thus predicted to possess a minimum of four MCR genes. Previous studies on cartilaginous fish have shown evidence for the presence of only three MCRs. The purpose of this thesis is to functionally express the MC5R from the spiny dogfish (Squalus acanthias) and the putative MC2R and MC3R from the elephant shark (Callorhinchus milii); these receptors have not yet been fully characterized. In this study, SacMC5R was able to be expressed in CHO cells …
Hepatitis C Virus-Induced Hepatocellular Carcinoma: Cancer Stem Cell And Gene Therapy, Heba Samir Esmaeil Allam
Hepatitis C Virus-Induced Hepatocellular Carcinoma: Cancer Stem Cell And Gene Therapy, Heba Samir Esmaeil Allam
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is an important human pathogen that causes chronic hepatitis cirrhosis, steatosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) worldwide. Although current FDA-approved drugs are partially effective in the treatment of HCV, methods for cure and vaccine against the virus are still awaited. My thesis work presented here is focused on finding mechanism (s) of HCV-induced hepatocarcinogenesis and devising novel means to combat the HCV infection.
Herein, we have shown that long-term HCV expression results in the acquisition of cancer stem-like cells (CSCs) traits in liver derived cell lines. These traits include enhanced expression of putative stem cell markers DCAMKL-1, …
Porting Transmedia Storytelling To Journalism, Kevin Timothy Moloney
Porting Transmedia Storytelling To Journalism, Kevin Timothy Moloney
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines how the methods of transmedia storytelling emerging in the entertainment industry might be used in a journalism context. Journalism is facing many crises, not the least of which is a loss of readership and perceived relevance to its public. Presented with an ever-expanding array of media with which to interact, the public is more difficult to attract to a socially relevant issue or a politically important story. Faced with similar issues, the entertainment industry has developed a means to engage with fans in a way that draws them across multiple media platforms, better captures their imagination and …
Kids And Kingdom: The Precarious Presence Of Children In The Synoptic Gospels, Arthur James Murphy
Kids And Kingdom: The Precarious Presence Of Children In The Synoptic Gospels, Arthur James Murphy
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
At a time when institutions of faith are increasingly confronted with scandals that have brought the vulnerability of young children to the fore of religious consciousness, some scholars have pointed to Jesus' special concern and affection for children in the Gospels. Scholars are struck by how often the authors place Jesus in relation to children: healing them, blessing them, and challenging their marginal status by characterizing them as models for understanding the kingdom of God proclaimed by Jesus. If the authors had concluded their stories of Jesus' eschatological gathering with the blessing of the children, then their characterizations of children …
The Social Determinants Of Hiv/Aids In Cambodia: Is It Too Early To Call Micro Medical Efforts A Success?, Matthew Aaron Sherwood
The Social Determinants Of Hiv/Aids In Cambodia: Is It Too Early To Call Micro Medical Efforts A Success?, Matthew Aaron Sherwood
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Cambodia, a least developed country (LDC) with a recent history of civil war and genocide, has been widely considered to be a success story when it comes to the fight against HIV/AIDS. Within a few years of the first HIV positive blood test in the kingdom in 1991, it quickly became the country with the highest prevalence in the region, with estimates of as many as 4% of the population being infected at one point.
In recent years, Cambodia's HIV/AIDS infection rates have plummeted to below 1%, with most of the credit being given to the implementation of micro-medical measures, …
Products Of Their Environment? Nuclear Proliferation And The Emerging Multipolar International System, Jonathan David Moore
Products Of Their Environment? Nuclear Proliferation And The Emerging Multipolar International System, Jonathan David Moore
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The world is shifting from a unipolar system following the end of the Cold War to a multipolar system that is ushered in by "the rise of the rest." This change in the global structure has led some analysts to predict an increase in nuclear weapons proliferation caused by increased uncertainty and a decrease in alliances and security assurances. Nuclear proliferation, however, will not increase because these types of predictions are founded upon realist assumptions that inaccurately predict the characteristics of the emerging multipolar system as well as inaccurately understanding calculations of states with regard to nuclear weapons programs. I …

Geographic range margins offer testing grounds for limits to adaptation. If range limits are concordant with niche limits, range expansions require the evolution of new phenotypes that can maintain populations beyond current range margins. However, many species' range margins appear static over time, suggesting limits on the ability of marginal populations to evolve appropriate phenotypes. A potential explanation is the swamping gene flow hypothesis, which posits that asymmetrical gene flow from large, well-adapted central populations prevents marginal populations from locally adapting. We present an empirical framework for combining gene flow, environment, and fitness-related phenotypes to infer the potential for maladaptation, …
Fevered Desires And Interracial Intimacies In Jungle Fever, Ronald Sundstrom
Fevered Desires And Interracial Intimacies In Jungle Fever, Ronald Sundstrom
Philosophy
Spike Lee’s Jungle Fever centers on a sexual affair between a black man, Flipper, and a white, Italian American woman, Angela. This pairing centers on the type of interracial relationship and pairing (black man plus white woman) typically obsessed about in discussions of interracial romances. It is also the pairing offered by Left radicals, such as Frantz Fanon in Black Skins, White Masks (1952), as the prototype of racial revolution. The title of Julius Lester’s black nationalist classic Look Out, Whitey! Black Power’s Gonna Get Your Mama! (1969), dramatically illustrates this view. Lee’s Jungle Fever upsets this radical stance by …
Evaluating Tidal Marsh Sustainability In The Face Of Sea-Level Rise: A Hybrid Modeling Approach Applied To San Francisco Bay, Diana Stralberg, Matthew Brennan, John Callaway, Julian K. Wood, Lisa M. Schile, Dennis Jongsomjit, Maggi Kelly, V Thomas Parker, Stephen Crooks
Evaluating Tidal Marsh Sustainability In The Face Of Sea-Level Rise: A Hybrid Modeling Approach Applied To San Francisco Bay, Diana Stralberg, Matthew Brennan, John Callaway, Julian K. Wood, Lisa M. Schile, Dennis Jongsomjit, Maggi Kelly, V Thomas Parker, Stephen Crooks
Environmental Science
Background: Tidal marshes will be threatened by increasing rates of sea-level rise (SLR) over the next century. Managers seek guidance on whether existing and restored marshes will be resilient under a range of potential future conditions, and on prioritizing marsh restoration and conservation activities.
Methodology: Building upon established models, we developed a hybrid approach that involves a mechanistic treatment of marsh accretion dynamics and incorporates spatial variation at a scale relevant for conservation and restoration decisionmaking. We applied this model to San Francisco Bay, using best-available elevation data and estimates of sediment supply and organic matter accumulation developed for 15 …
Diversity-Function Relationships Changed In A Long-Term Restoration Experiment, James M. Doherty, John Callaway, Joy B. Zedler
Diversity-Function Relationships Changed In A Long-Term Restoration Experiment, James M. Doherty, John Callaway, Joy B. Zedler
Environmental Science
The central tenet of biodiversity-ecosystem function (BEF) theory, that species richness increases function, could motivate restoration practitioners to incorporate a greater number of species into their projects. But it is not yet clear how well BEF theory predicts outcomes of restoration, because it has been developed through tests involving short-run and tightly controlled (e.g., weeded) experiments. Thus, we resampled our 1997 BEF experiment in a restored salt marsh to test for long-term effects of species richness (plantings with 1, 3, and 6 species per 2 x 2 m plot), with multiple ecosystem functions as response variables. Over 11 years, 1- …

Cilia are microtubule-based protrusions from the cell surface that are involved in a number of essential signaling pathways, yet little is known about many of the proteins that regulate their structure and function. A number of putative cilia genes have been identified by proteomics and comparative sequence analyses, but functional data are lacking for the vast majority. We therefore monitored the effects in three cell lines of small interfering RNA (siRNA) knockdown of 40 of these genes by high-content analysis. We assayed cilia number, length, and transport of two different cargoes (membranous serotonin receptor 6-green fluorescent protein [HTR6-GFP] and the …
One Woman’S Struggle: A Reflection Of Servant-Leadership, Margaret Muchiri
One Woman’S Struggle: A Reflection Of Servant-Leadership, Margaret Muchiri
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
Kenya is a free democracy now. The British colonizers left Kenya in 1963 but they left a land devastated both in terms of a ruined ecosystem and an uprooted culture (Kemble, 2003, p. 206). In terms of an ecosystem, Kenya was reduced to a mere shell of its former self. Kenyan land had been deforested and its fertility exhausted by the colonial masters (Kenyatta, 1989; Maathai, 2006, pp. 3-8). Wangari Maathai, upon seeing the devastation, decided to do what she could to combat environmental and poverty issues arising from deforestation ("Wangari Muta Maathai," n.d., para. 2). Because of her, some …

An Evaluation Of Surface Water Sources Using Spatial And Temporal Variations In Stream Chemistry In A Headwater Catchment, Margaret Ann Zimmer
An Evaluation Of Surface Water Sources Using Spatial And Temporal Variations In Stream Chemistry In A Headwater Catchment, Margaret Ann Zimmer
Honors Papers
Headwaters are the most ubiquitous stream type worldwide, provide invaluable ecosystem services, and regulate downstream chemistry. These systems have high sensitivity to disturbance, however, and thus are susceptible to change at low thresholds of environmental, climatic or human impact. In this study, we use fine scale sampling to describe spatial and temporal stream chemistry variations in a first order 0.41 km2 headwater catchment at Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, NH, USA to pinpoint the landscape position and extent of dominant processes and controls on surface water. We discovered a range of stream water chemistry that is as variable as stream chemistry …

Biological Effects Of Dispersants And Dispersed Oil In Surface And Deep Ocean Species, Ronald Tjeerdema, Adriana C. Bejarano, Sara Edge
Coastal Response Research Center
Beginning with the use of industrial-strength detergents, dispersing agents have been employed in spill response for decades. The Corexit series of agents in common use today generally consist of non-ionic and/or anionic surfactants in a solvent base designed to enhance miscibility under varying temperature and salinity conditions; cationic surfactants tend to be too toxic for use. While dispersants generally serve to decrease the interfacial surface tension of oil, thus facilitating its weathering under low-energy conditions, their surface-active nature also causes their interaction with cell surfaces – those of single-celled organisms as well as the gills of vertebrates and invertebrates.
