Chapter 18- Chick Survival Of Greater Prairie-Chickens, Adam C. Schole, Ty W. Matthews, Larkin A. Powell, Jeffrey J. Lusk, J. Scott Taylor Jan 2011

Chapter 18- Chick Survival Of Greater Prairie-Chickens, Adam C. Schole, Ty W. Matthews, Larkin A. Powell, Jeffrey J. Lusk, J. Scott Taylor

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Chick survival during the first three weeks of life is a critical stage in the demography of Greater Prairie-Chickens (Tympanuchus cupido), but little information is available. Biologists often estimate brood success using periodic flushes of radio-marked females, but it is impossible to determine mortality factors if chicks are not radio-marked. We used sutures to attach 0.5-g transmitters to 1- to 2-day-old chicks in Johnson County, Nebraska, during 2008. Our objectives were to (1) assess causes of mortality of 0- to 21-day-old chicks, (2) estimate daily survival probability for 0- to 21-day-old chicks, and (3) evaluate the effect of applying …

Unusual climatic events often lead to intense natural selection on organisms. Whether episodic selection events result in permanent microevolutionary changes or are reversed by opposing selection pressures at a later time is rarely known, because most studies do not last long enough to witness rare events and document their aftermath. In 1996, unusually cold and wet weather in southwestern Nebraska led to the deaths of thousands of Cliff Swallows (Petrochelidon pyrrhonota) over a 6-day period. Survivors were skeletally larger, with shorter wings and tails, and had less asymmetry in wing length than those that died. We determined trajectories of morphological …

Properties Of Wood Waste Stored For Energy Production, Isaac Slaven, Eva Haviarova, Daniel Cassens

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

Storage of wood biomass is not a new concern, but our current focus on using wood for renewable energy has brought it back to researchers’ attention. Since much of the past research done on pile storage relates to paper pulp chips, most of it dates to the 1960s and 1970s. Fiber shortages during that period caused increased interest in higher pulp yields (Zoch, Springer, & Hajny 1976). Further interest in the use of whole trees came about from the energy crisis of the late 1970s. Recent efforts by the government to create a U.S. energy portfolio rich in renewable resources …

Growth Curves Of Crossbred Cows Sired By Hereford, Angus, Belgian Blue, Brahman, Boran, And Tuli Bulls, And The Fraction Of Mature Body Weight And Height At Puberty, Harvey C. Freetly, L. A. Kuehn, L. V. Cundiff

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

The objective of this study was to evaluate the growth curves of females to determine if mature size and relative rates of maturation among breeds differed. Body weight and hip height data were fitted to the nonlinear function BW = f(age) = A − Bek×age, where A is an estimate of mature BW and k determines the rate that BW or height moves from B to A. Cows represented progeny from 28 Hereford, 38 Angus, 25 Belgian Blue, 34 Brahman, 8 Boran, and 9 Tuli sires. Bulls from these breeds were mated by AI to Angus, Hereford, …

Striving For Long-Term Forest Sustainability—Even As The Climate Changes, Shari Anstedt Jan 2011

Striving For Long-Term Forest Sustainability—Even As The Climate Changes, Shari Anstedt

Joint Fire Science Program Briefs (2007-2012)

Climate change, and its ecological impact, is right on the horizon. According to climate predictions over the next century, the southwestern United States will face higher temperatures and greater evaporative loss, which will heighten the possibility for severe drought. The stress of more frequent, intense droughts can increase tree mortality, hinder growth, and alter forest structure and composition. As a result, it’s now more important than ever for land managers to understand how today’s decisions and actions can impact future forest conditions. To develop answers, researchers conducted a study in the oldest ponderosa pine restoration project in the Southwest. Located …

Assessing Fuel Treatment Effectiveness After The Tripod Complex Fires, Shari Anstedt

Joint Fire Science Program Briefs (2007-2012)

Over the past 50 years, wildfire frequency and area burned have increased in the dry forests of western North America. To help reduce high surface fuel loads and potential wildfire severity, a variety of fuel treatments are applied. In spite of the common use of these management practices, there have been relatively few opportunities to quantitatively measure their efficacy in wildfires. That changed with the 2006 Tripod Complex fires in the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest in Washington—one of the largest fire events in Washington state over the past five decades. A serendipitous involvement of recent fuel treatments and the availability of …

Very Preterm Birth Is Reduced In Women Receiving An Integrated Behavioral Intervention: A Randomized Controlled Trial, Ayman El-Mohandes, Michele Kiely, Marie G. Gantz, M. Nabil El-Khorazaty

Publications and Research

Background This study examines whether an integrated behavioral intervention with proven efficacy in reducing psycho-behavioral risks (smoking, environmental tobacco smoke exposure (ETSE), depression, and intimate partner violence (IPV)) in African-Americans is associated with improved pregnancy outcomes

Methods A randomized controlled trial targeting risks during pregnancy was conducted in the District of Columbia. African-American women were recruited if reporting at least one of the risks mentioned above. Randomization to intervention or usual care was site and risk specific. Sociodemographic, health risk and pregnancy outcome data were collected. Data on 819 women, and their singleton live born infants were analyzed using an …

Bacteria of the genus Frankia are mycelium-forming actinomycetes that are found as nitrogen-fixing facultative symbionts of actinorhizal plants. Although soil-dwelling actinomycetes are well-known producers of bioactive compounds, the genus Frankia has largely gone uninvestigated for this potential. Bioinformatic analysis of the genome sequences of Frankia strains ACN14a, CcI3, and EAN1pec revealed an unexpected number of secondary metabolic biosynthesis gene clusters. Our analysis led to the identification of at least 65 biosynthetic gene clusters, the vast majority of which appear to be unique and for which products have not been observed or characterized. More than 25 secondary metabolite structures or structure …

Sex Equality's Unnamed Nemesis, Veronica Percia Jan 2011

Sex Equality's Unnamed Nemesis, Veronica Percia

Michigan Journal of Gender & Law

Sex inequality still exists. However, its manifestations have evolved since the early sex inequality cases were heard in courts and legislatures first began structuring statutory regimes to combat it. In particular, so-called "facial" discrimination against men and women on the basis of sex has no doubt decreased since the advent of this legal assault on sex inequality. Yet the gendered assumptions that structure our institutions and interactions have proven resilient. With sex discrimination now operating more covertly, the problem of sex inequality looks considerably different than it once did. Courts, however, have failed to successfully respond to the changing contours …

The Last Male Bastion: In Search Of A Trojan Horse, Joan Macleod Heminway Jan 2011

The Last Male Bastion: In Search Of A Trojan Horse, Joan Macleod Heminway

Scholarly Works

Numerous legal scholars and commentators have written about the paucity of women in the boardroom at influence-wielding U.S. public companies. Fewer have written about the scarcity of female Chief Executive Officers, and fewer yet have written about the relatively low numbers of female executive officers, at U.S. public companies.

This brief essay (an edited version of my remarks offered at the University of Dayton School of Law’s symposium on "Perspectives on Gender and Business Ethics: Women in Corporate Governance") does not endeavor to add to the collective understanding of observed gender disparities in boardrooms and the C-suite — the senior …

Amp-Activated Protein Kinase (Ampk) Activity Is Not Required For Neuronal Development But Regulates Axogenesis During Metabolic Stress, Tyisha Williams, J. Courchet, B. Viollet, J. E. Brenman, F. Polleux

Biology Faculty Research

Mammalian brain connectivity requires the coordinated production and migration of billions of neurons and the formation of axons and dendrites. The LKB1/Par4 kinase is required for axon formation during cortical development in vivo partially through its ability to activate SAD-A/B kinases. LKB1 is a master kinase phosphorylating and activating at least 11 other serine/threonine kinases including the metabolic sensor AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), which defines this branch of the kinome. A recent study using a gene-trap allele of the β1 regulatory subunit of AMPK suggested that AMPK catalytic activity is required for proper brain development including neurogenesis and neuronal survival. …

Towards A Theory Of Periodic Difference Equations And Its Application To Population Dynamics, Saber Elaydi, Rafael Luís, Henrique Oliveira

Mathematics Faculty Research

This survey contains the most updated results on the dynamics of periodic difference equations or discrete dynamical systems this time. Our focus will be on stability theory, bifurcation theory, and on the effect of periodic forcing on the welfare of the population (attenuance versus resonance). Moreover, the survey alludes to two more types of dynamical systems, namely, almost periodic difference equations and stochastic di®erence equations.

Final Environmental Assessment Zones And Split Seasons For Duck Hunting, James R. Kelley Jr., Ronald W. Kokel, Marcia Pradines Jan 2011

Final Environmental Assessment Zones And Split Seasons For Duck Hunting, James R. Kelley Jr., Ronald W. Kokel, Marcia Pradines

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Zoning is defined as the delineation of areas within a State where duck hunting seasons are set independently of each other. The purpose of zoning is to provide a more equitable distribution of duck harvest opportunity among hunters in a given State. States are allowed the option of splitting their allotted hunting days into two (or in some cases, three) segments to take advantage of species-specific peaks of abundance or to satisfy hunters in different areas who want to hunt during the period of peak waterfowl abundance in their area. The Service’s current zoning/split criteria allow States the following options: …
