Organizations And The Evolution Of Cooperation, Danielle F. Jung, David A. Lake Jan 2011

Organizations And The Evolution Of Cooperation, Danielle F. Jung, David A. Lake

2011

The Repeated Prisoner’s Dilemma (RPD) is a metaphor for the difficulties of achieving cooperation in social life. We present results from an agent-based model (ABM) of the RPD in which agents interact in a “market,” equivalent to the non-organizational interactions within the standard RPD, or have the option of interacting within networks, which allow agents to acquire information from other agents with whom they have been paired or to select agents with whom to interact, or hierarchies, in which cooperation is enforced by the threat of third party punishment. The ABM sheds new light on when and how organizations affect …

Feasibility Of Public-Private Partnerships For Swamp Rabbit Conservation., Lyann Rubert, Eric M. Schauber, Clayton K. Nielsen, Paul D. Scharine Jan 2011

Feasibility Of Public-Private Partnerships For Swamp Rabbit Conservation., Lyann Rubert, Eric M. Schauber, Clayton K. Nielsen, Paul D. Scharine

Publications

The distribution and abundance of swamp rabbits in southern Illinois have decreased due to loss and fragmentation of bottomland hardwood forests. Remaining populations are likely isolated because of limited dispersal across open areas. Private citizens own 69% of highly suitable swamp rabbit habitat in southern Illinois, so public-private partnership is key to any conservation efforts. Owners of highly suitable habitat were sent mail surveys to determine current and acceptable forms of land management, participation in government incentive programs, and interest in swamp rabbit conservation. The response rate was 41%, and 69% of surveyed landowners indicated interest in learning about or …

Effects Of Herbivores On Seed Banks Of Grass And Shrublands At The Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico (2004), Terri Koontz Jan 2011

Effects Of Herbivores On Seed Banks Of Grass And Shrublands At The Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico (2004), Terri Koontz

Sevilleta LTER Program Data

Grazers and granivores have the potential to affect seed banks. Several studies have examined the impact of these herbivores on the aboveground vegetation, but few have looked at how they influence the seed bank. I asked whether both grazers and granivores alter the seed bank at the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge. Long-term experimental plots were installed in 1996 to exclude grazers and granivores from a grassland and shrubland. Soil samples were collected from these plots and seeds were germinated in a greenhouse. The grassland had significantly more species in its seed bank than the shrubland. Also, the seed bank composition …

Effects Of Kangaroo Rat Mounds On Seed Banks Of Grass And Shrublands At The Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico (2001), Terri Koontz, Heather Simpson

Sevilleta LTER Program Data

Disturbance is a major factor in determining the spatial structure and temporal dynamics of ecological systems. Many studies have been conducted concerning the plant assemblages around Dipodmys spectabilis mounds compared to the off mound area. These studies have shown that annual plant cover is higher on the kangaroo rat mound compared to off the mound. However, no studies have addressed the effects of these rodents disturbance on the soil seed bank. Soil seed banks are an important component of the plant community particularly in arid environments. Annual plants have been known to create viable seeds that remain dormant in the …

Will Overfishing And Proposed Mississippi River Diversions Imperil Louisiana Oyster Fisheries? Commentary And Review, Lynn B. Loftin, H. Dickson Hoese, Mark A. Konikoff Jan 2011

Will Overfishing And Proposed Mississippi River Diversions Imperil Louisiana Oyster Fisheries? Commentary And Review, Lynn B. Loftin, H. Dickson Hoese, Mark A. Konikoff

Gulf of Mexico Science

Two recent articles based on oyster landings have challenged the prevailing wisdom about the most important factors controlling Louisiana oyster production. One article concludes that the northern Gulf industry (principally Louisiana) will collapse based on overfishing; the second concludes that the addition of freshwater through diversions could be harmful to production. These findings are not supported by the literature or our statistical analysis of the landings data. In an effort to put into perspective the complexity of the factors affecting oyster production in the northern Gulf of Mexico, several areas of the oyster literature are reviewed, including (1) hysteresis, (2) …

Comparison Of Ichthyoplankton Sampling Conducted By The State Of Alabama And The National Marine Fisheries Service During Southeast Area Monitoring And Assessment Program Fall Plankton Surveys, Christina M. Schobernd, Mark Van Hoose, Joanne Lyczkowski-Shultz

Gulf of Mexico Science

Data on the abundance and distribution of the early life stages of fishes were collected by the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) and the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) between 1984 and 2007 during Southeast Area Monitoring and Assessment Program (SEAMAP) cooperative resource surveys in the northern Gulf of Mexico. The ADCNR collected samples from various locations inside and outside Mobile Bay, while the NMFS collected samples farther offshore at four standard SEAMAP grid stations near the Alabama coast. We compared catch data on larval and juvenile fishes, along with environmental information, from a total of 225 …

Relationship Between Instream Habitat Characteristics, Emergent Insects, And Riparian Bird Communities, Kyle D. Forgette Jan 2011

Relationship Between Instream Habitat Characteristics, Emergent Insects, And Riparian Bird Communities, Kyle D. Forgette

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Streams and riparian areas can be intricately connected via physical and biotic interactions that influence habitat conditions and supply resource subsidies between these ecosystems. Streambed characteristics such as the size of substrate particles influence the composition and the abundance of emergent aquatic insects, which can be an important resource for riparian breeding birds. We predict fine sediment abundance in small headwater streams directly affects the composition and number of emergent insects while it may indirectly affect riparian bird assemblages. Streams with abundant fine sediments that embed larger substrates should have lower emergence of large insects such as phemeroptera, Plecoptera and …

Multidecadal Otolith Growth Histories For Red And Gray Snapper (Lutjanus Spp.) In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Usa, Bryan A. Black, Robert J. Allman, Isaac D. Schroeder, Michael J. Schirripa Jan 2011

Multidecadal Otolith Growth Histories For Red And Gray Snapper (Lutjanus Spp.) In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Usa, Bryan A. Black, Robert J. Allman, Isaac D. Schroeder, Michael J. Schirripa

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Dendrochronology (tree-ring analysis) techniques were applied to develop chronologies from the annual growth-increment widths of red snapper (Lutjanus campechanus) and gray snapper (Lutjanus griseus) otoliths sampled from the northern Gulf of Mexico, USA. Growth increment widths showed considerable synchrony within and across species, indicating that some component of environmental variability influenced growth. The final, exactly dated red snapper chronology continuously spanned 1975 through 2003, while the gray snapper chronology continuously spanned 1975 through 2006. To determine baseline climategrowth relationships, chronologies were compared to monthly averages of sea surface temperatures, U winds (west to east), V winds …

Being a disabling symptom of many medical conditions, effective pain control is one of the most important therapeutic priorities. Morphine and other opioid drugs produce analgesia primarily through μ opioid (MOP) receptors, which mediate beneficial but also the non-beneficial actions. Appropriate identification of novel opioid analgesics may reduce complications and improve patient compliance. It was reported that hydrazones, oximes, carbazones and semicarbazone derivatives of morphinan-6-ones, e.g. dihydromorphinone or oxymorphone, exhibit high affinity at the MOP receptor [1]. Since most of these structures show high antinociceptive potency while having less pronounced side effects, it remains a promising task to …

Soviet Pins: Souvenirs As Spoils In The Triumphal Procession, Alex Levant Jan 2011

Soviet Pins: Souvenirs As Spoils In The Triumphal Procession, Alex Levant

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

In Moscow today, old Soviet pins, which had once been awarded to school kids as a rite of passage, are sold as souvenirs to tourists. These pins are an example of the many ruins of the Soviet Union that have experienced a metamorphosis: they connote an entirely new set of meanings that have supplanted their previous significance without any change in their material form. This article explores the transformation of these “cultural treasures” through the creative output of another Soviet “ruin”: the post-Stalinist philosopher, Evald Ilyenkov, whose work challenged the hegemony of Soviet Diamat, but has not been adequately …

Faculty Working Papers

The methods, techniques, and reliability of the forensic sciences in general, and the pattern identification disciplines in particular, have faced significant scrutiny in recent years. Critics have attacked the scientific basis for the assumptions and claims made by forensic scientists both in and out of the courtroom. Defenders have emphasized courts' long-standing acceptance of forensic science evidence, the relative dearth of known errors, and the skill and experience of practitioners. This Article reflects an effort made by a diverse group of participants in these debates, including law professors, academics from several disciplines, and practicing forensic scientists, to find and explore …
