Global Phylogeography Of The Widely Introduced North West Pacific Ascidian Styela Clava, Paul Hallas Feb 2011

Global Phylogeography Of The Widely Introduced North West Pacific Ascidian Styela Clava, Paul Hallas

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

The solitary ascidian Styela clava Herdman, 1882 is considered to be native to Japan, Korea, northern China and the RussianFederation in the NW Pacific, but it has spread globally over the last 80 years and is now established as an introducedspecies on the east and west coasts of North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. In eastern Canada it reachessufficient density to be a serious pest to aquaculture concerns. We sequenced a fragment of the cytochrome oxidasesubunit I mitochondrial gene (COI) from a total of 554 individuals to examine the genetic relationships of 20 S. clavapopulations sampled throughout the introduced …

Contracting For Impure Public Goods: Carbon Offsets And Additionality, Charles F. Mason, Andrew J. Plantinga Feb 2011

Contracting For Impure Public Goods: Carbon Offsets And Additionality, Charles F. Mason, Andrew J. Plantinga

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Governments contracting with private agents for the provision of an impure public good must contend with agents who would potentially supply the good absent any payments. This additionality problem is centrally important in the use of carbon offsets as part of climate change mitigation. Analyzing optimal contracts for forest carbon sequestration, an important offset category, we conduct a national-scale simulation using results from an econometric model of land-use change. The results indicate that for an increase in forest area of 50 million acres, annual government expenditures with optimal contracts are about $4 billion lower compared than under a uniform subsidy.

Predictive Modeling Of Alaskan Brown Bears (Ursus Arctos): Assessing Future Climate Impacts With Open Access Online Software, Antje Henkelmann Feb 2011

Predictive Modeling Of Alaskan Brown Bears (Ursus Arctos): Assessing Future Climate Impacts With Open Access Online Software, Antje Henkelmann

Faculty

As vital representative indicators of the state of the ecosystem, Alaskan brown bear (Ursus arctos) populations have been studied extensively. However, an updated statewide density estimate is still absent, as are models predicting future occurrence and abundance. This kind of information is crucial to ensure population viability by adapting conservation planning to future needs. In this study, a predictive model for brown bear densities in Alaska was developed based on brown bear estimates derived on the best publicly available data (Miller et al. 1997). Salford’s TreeNet data mining software was applied to determine the impact of different environmental variables on …

Effet Des Contaminants Sur La Résistance Mécanique Des Gants De Protection : Analyse Préliminaire, Patricia Dolez, Toan Vu-Khanh, Chantal Gauvin, Jaime Lara
