Invasive Plant Species As Potential Bioenergy Producers And Carbon Contributors, Stephen L. Young, Gayathri Gopalakrishnan, Deepak R. Keshwani Mar 2011

Invasive Plant Species As Potential Bioenergy Producers And Carbon Contributors, Stephen L. Young, Gayathri Gopalakrishnan, Deepak R. Keshwani

West Central Research and Extension Center, North Platte

Among recent advances in developing cellulosic and noncellulosic biofuel sources, corn, switchgrass, and others (for example, camelina and canola) have risen to the top. In surveying the landscape, a potentially promising new area of bioenergy production exists—invasive plant species. The addition of invasive plant species as a bioenergy source will help to diversify the nation’s energy dependence and help in the reduction of the negative environmental and social impacts from energy crop production. In addition, belowground carbon stores may provide an opportunity to reduce the impacts associated with global climate change.

In the agriculture sector, harvesting equipment is well advanced …

Grasshopper Outlook On Rangelands: 2011, Martin Beutler, Roger Gates, Bruce Helbig Mar 2011

Grasshopper Outlook On Rangelands: 2011, Martin Beutler, Roger Gates, Bruce Helbig

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Grasshoppers are often found to be a significant problem for both farmers and ranchers. Even though grasshoppers are a normal component of a forage ecosystem and generally exert minimal disturbance, problems occur when conditions lead to grasshop¬per populations that increase to the point where they cause millions of dollars of damage. Grasshopper outbreaks are the result of a complex combination of factors. Several factors are beyond the control of managers. However, the “pasture microcli¬mate” (the immediate environment where grasshop¬pers hatch, grow, and reproduce) may be subject to subtle manipulation. Because grasshopper outbreaks are progressive and cumulative, small interruptions or reductions …

Algerian Women Between French Emancipation And Religious Domination On Marriage And Divorce From 1959 Ordonnance No. 59-274 To The 1984 Code De La Famille, Teresa Camacho De Abes

Journal of International Women's Studies

The impact of the Code de la famille on Algerian women has been felt for 27 years and criticism of it is based on is supposed adherence to Sharī’ah. This is not an adequate assessment of this legal document or its amendments. It is a more complex issue that involves the attempt of society to re-define its identity as Algerian and Islamic after independence. In attempting to establish Algerian women’s identity there was a shift from fearless independent combatants who moved among men during the struggle for independence to a space for women as strictly wives and mothers within the …

Investigating The Transition Process When Moving From A Spiral Curriculum Alignment Into A Field-Focus Science Curriculum Alignment In Middle School, Randi Kay Alwardt Mar 2011

Investigating The Transition Process When Moving From A Spiral Curriculum Alignment Into A Field-Focus Science Curriculum Alignment In Middle School, Randi Kay Alwardt

Dissertations

This investigation examined the transition from a spiral science curriculum to a field-focus science curriculum in middle school. A spiral science curriculum focuses on a small part of each field of science during each middle school year, more of a general science concept. In contast to that, the base of a field-focus curriculum is that each grade level focuses on a specific field of science, more of a high school like concept. The literature reviewed provides a history of science education, the steps of the change process, and the importance of professional development. The literature review provided a basis for …

Individual Self, Relational Self, Collective Self: Hierarchical Ordering Of The Tripartite Self, Constantine Sedikides, Lowell Gaertner, Erin M. O'Mara

Psychology Faculty Publications

The individual self comprise unique attributes, the relational self comprises partner-shared attributes, and the collective self comprises ingroup-shared attributes. All selves are fundamental components of the self-concept, with each being important and meaningful to human experience and with each being associated with health benefits. Are the selves, however, equally important and meaningful? We review a program of research that tested four competing theoretical views suggesting that the motivational hub of human experience is (a) the individual self, (b) the relational self, (b) the collective self, or (c) determined by contextual or cultural factors. The research furnished support to the view …

The Pulmonologist's Role In Caring For Pregnant Women With Regard To The Reproductive Risks Of Diagnostic Radiological Studies Or Radiation Therapy., Robert Brent Mar 2011

The Pulmonologist's Role In Caring For Pregnant Women With Regard To The Reproductive Risks Of Diagnostic Radiological Studies Or Radiation Therapy., Robert Brent

Department of Pediatrics Faculty Papers

Radiography of the chest, head, neck, teeth, or extremity exposes the embryo or ovary to insignificant exposures of radiation except when radionuclides are utilized. In some instances, there is no exposure at all. Pulmonologists are fortunate with regard to the specific studies they request to provide clinical care because most of the diagnostic tests do not directly expose the uterus (embryo) or ovary. This article discusses radiation risks and their evaluation and pregnancy-related issues in diagnostic radiological studies.

A Study Of Osteocyte Apoptosis By Region And Quadrant In Murine Cortical Bone, Jessica Kristen Chan

Master's Theses

ABSTRACT

A Study of Osteocyte Apoptosis by Region and Quadrant in Murine Cortical Bone

Jessica Kristen Chan

Osteocytes undergo apoptosis to spatially and temporally initiate bone remodeling.  This study investigates the distribution of apoptotic osteocytes within different quadrants and regions of cortical bone and compares the frequency of osteocyte apoptosis to regional factors associated with bone remodeling.  Specifically, the quantity of apoptosis was compared to levels of the bone morphagenic protein antagonists noggin and gremlin.  Samples of unloaded right tibial bone obtained from C57/Bl/6 mice underwent TUNEL staining for apoptotic osteocytes and were counterstained with methyl green to detect osteocyte …

‘The amount of time that has been spent trying to sort this matter in a logical fashion with the (New South Wales) Department of Education and Training (DET) over the past two years is just ludicrous. There have been more twists and turns than an Agatha Christie novel, and now the school community has decided to add a gripping chapter of its own by bringing in a crane and chains. If there’s to be a truly climactic chapter, it will happen if or when the DET tries to remove the building. We’re watching the site 24/7, and if the community …

Hybrid Oaks: Full Of Vexation And Wonder, W. John Hayden Mar 2011

Hybrid Oaks: Full Of Vexation And Wonder, W. John Hayden

Biology Faculty Publications

Distinguishing different species of oak in the forests of eastern North America can be challenging. For one thing, there are simply a lot of different species to sort out. A recent reference (Stein et al. 2003), describes 50 species in the genus Quercusoccurring naturally east of the 100th meridian, and 90 species are distinguished for all of North America north of Mexico (Nixon 1997). With so many species to parse, confident identification requires careful study of leaves, stem and leaf hairiness, and fully mature acorns with their caps. But care is not always enough, because in addition to the …

Year In Review, Scott A. Waldman, Andre Terzic

Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics Faculty Papers

If examination of journal performance is a surrogate for the vitality of a discipline, the continued ascension of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics (CPT) bodes well for the evolution and practice of human therapeutics in this decade. CPT has excelled as the authoritative, cross-disciplinary journal in experimental and clinical medicine devoted to publishing advances in the nature, action, efficacy and evaluation of therapeutics in humans. Building on a foundation that established the core tenets, and a framework providing the structural integrity for the field, CPT was conceived by visionary precedent editors and editorial teams who were themselves leaders of …

Unwanted Sexual Experience: An Investigation Of Emotion And Physiology, Julie Alberty Mar 2011

Unwanted Sexual Experience: An Investigation Of Emotion And Physiology, Julie Alberty

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The statistics on the prevalence of sexual abuse are varied and alarmingly large. Rojas and Kinder (2007) showed that a little less than 30% of males stated that they had been sexually abused while a little over 30% of females reported being sexually abused. The purpose of this study is to obtain additional information regarding cognitive-affective processing in individuals who have had an unwanted sexual experience. The current study is a pilot study that questions whether a difference in physiological response, as measured by skin conductance and heart rate, will occur in people who have had an unwanted sexual experience …

Vocalization Behavior Of The Endangered Bahama Oriole (Icterus Northropi): Ontogenetic, Sexual, Temporal, Duetting Pair, And Geographic Variation, Valerie A. Lee

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Many birds communicate via a diverse set of vocalizations, but the contexts, roles, and structure of their varied songs and calls may change with age, differ between sexes, and vary temporally and geographically. In New World orioles, most tropical species exhibit the ancestral states of sexual monochromatism (both sexes have similar plumage) and monovocalism (both sexes sing and often duet together), whereas migratory temperate species tend toward dichromatism (males brightly colored and females drab) and divocalism (males sing almost exclusively). In this study, I examined the vocalizations of the Bahama Oriole, a non-migratory, monochromatic species, to learn where it fits …

Psychopathic Traits, Skin Conductance, And Emotion In The Normal Population, Kimberley Rose Mar 2011

Psychopathic Traits, Skin Conductance, And Emotion In The Normal Population, Kimberley Rose

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Research has suggested that psychopathic characteristics exist along a continuum extending into the normal population (Andershed, Gustafson, Kerr, & Stattin, 2002; Ross, Lutz, & Bailley, 2004; Williams, Paulhus, & Hare, 2007). Individuals high in subclinical psychopathy were expected to show the same pattern of diminished psychophysiological responding to negative stimuli that incarcerated psychopathic individuals have shown. The callous affect (CA) dimension of psychopathy was expected to be associated with physiological differences as this is considered the core element of psychopathy. Level of CA was compared for skin conductance response (SCR) magnitude to empathy evoking versus threatening stimuli. This was done …

Igf2 Promotes Activation Of Estrogen Receptors In Basal-Like Breast Cancer Cells, Angelique Richardson Mar 2011

Igf2 Promotes Activation Of Estrogen Receptors In Basal-Like Breast Cancer Cells, Angelique Richardson

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The autocrine-paracrine effects of IGF2 are important in the growth and differentiation of normal breast. In breast cancer (BC), IGF2 is initially stimulated by estrogen, progesterone and prolactin to regulate proliferation and cancer progression. These actions are mediated by the IGF-1R and insulin receptor A (IR-A) both members of the tyrosine- kinase receptors family. The activation of Estrogen Receptor (ER) is also very important in BC growth and progression. As BC progresses to estrogen-independent growth, the IGF-1R and the estrogen receptor (ER) interact in crosstalk mechanisms that are synergistic and results in enhanced activation of both receptors signaling cascades. This …

Modeling Treatment Outcomes In Eating Disorders, Kathryn Grace Truitt Mar 2011

Modeling Treatment Outcomes In Eating Disorders, Kathryn Grace Truitt

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Eating disorders are notoriously difficult and costly to treat, with only 40% of individuals with an eating disorder making a full recovery. Individually Tailored Service Allocation provides a dynamic treatment model defined by empirically accepted theory and consistently informed by data provided by the patient. The use of patient feedback allows for the tailoring of individual treatment plans to meet the unique and varied needs of each patient. Hierarchical Linear Modeling was used to examine the effect of Individually Tailored Service Allocation on eating disorder treatment outcomes. A total of 51 adult women meeting diagnostic criteria for an eating disorder …

Comparative Biology Of Sympatric Red Diamond And Southern Pacific Rattlesnakes In Southern California, Eric Allen Dugan Mar 2011

Comparative Biology Of Sympatric Red Diamond And Southern Pacific Rattlesnakes In Southern California, Eric Allen Dugan

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

I compared the biology of two sympatric rattlesnakes within the context of resource use and niche partitioning. Using radio-telemetry and mark-recapture involving passive integrated transponders (PIT) tags, I studied Red Diamond (Crotalus ruber) and Southern Pacific (C. oreganus helleri) Rattlesnakes in Chino Hills State Park, California, from March 2003 through March 2010. The first of three studies compared the two species in terms of home range size, movements, and mating phenology. Crotalus o. helleri occupied larger home ranges than C. ruber, and exhibited 1.9–2.8-fold greater movement distances (depending on year) than C. ruber. Mating phenology also varied, with C. ruber …

In previous pilot data, increasing fig consumption for six weeks among volunteers was found to be feasible.

Objective: To evaluate the effect of the consumption of California dried mission figs on serum lipid …

The Traumatic Stress Response In Child Maltreatment And Resultant Neuropsychological Effects, Kathryn R. Wilson, David J. Hansen, Ming Li Mar 2011

The Traumatic Stress Response In Child Maltreatment And Resultant Neuropsychological Effects, Kathryn R. Wilson, David J. Hansen, Ming Li

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Child maltreatment is a pervasive problem in our society that has long-term detrimental consequences to the development of the affected child such as future brain growth and functioning. In this paper, we surveyed empirical evidence on the neuropsychological effects of child maltreatment, with a special emphasis on emotional, behavioral, and cognitive process–response difficulties experienced by maltreated children. The alteration of the biochemical stress response system in the brain that changes an individual’s ability to respond efficiently and efficaciously to future stressors is conceptualized as the traumatic stress response. Vulnerable brain regions include the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis, the amygdala, the hippocampus, and …
