Historically, the Prairie Pothole Region (PPR) of North America was characterized by myriad semi-permanent, seasonal, and temporary wetlands interspersed among rivers in a context of prairie uplands. These wetlands have supported millions of en route and breeding wetland-dependent birds. Today, expanses of the PPR landscape are dominated by intensive agriculture, and many of the remaining habitats have been impacted by altered water regimes, increasing sedimentation, and changes in plant communities. Climate change is likely to cause further alterations by shifting the seasonal availability and distribution of water and vegetation communities. Climate change will also affect the phenology (annual recurrence of …

Changes In Relative Abundance Of Adult Walleye And Egg Density Following The Addition Of Walleye Spawning Habitat In A Midwest Irrigation Reservoir, Jordan D. Katt, Brian C. Peterson, Keith D. Koupal, Casey W. Schoenebeck, W. Wyatt Hoback

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications

Cobble substrate for walleye (Sander vitreus) spawning was added at Sherman Reservoir, Nebraska, in January 2008. We evaluated changes in relative adult walleye abundance and egg density in response to the cobble substrate and estimated site fidelity of adult walleye during the spawning seasons of 2007, 2008, and 2009. A 15% increase in electrofishing catch-per-unit-effort (CPUE) of adult walleye was observed on the cobble substrate the first season it was available (2008), but a 5% decrease in electrofishing CPUE was observed the second season (2009) compared to the 2007 season. While gill nets were not run during the …

A Peridynamic Formulation For Transient Heat Conduction In Bodies With Evolving Discontinuities, Monchai Duangpanya Mar 2011

A Peridynamic Formulation For Transient Heat Conduction In Bodies With Evolving Discontinuities, Monchai Duangpanya

Department of Engineering Mechanics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Modeling heat flow in bodies with discontinuities, such as cracks, or with inclusions that have different thermal properties has been a very challenging problem. Classical models lead to infinite heat fluxes at the tip of a crack and convergence of numerical methods that approximate solutions to such models have convergence and mesh dependency issues. To remove the difficulties faced by the classical models a novel nonlocal theory is formulated.
The new theory starts from the conservation of energy principle and uses the idea of nonlocal heat-transfer between material points. This idea leads to a transient heat transfer model that does …

The Sugar Sensor, Trehalose-6-Phosphate Synthase (Tps1), Regulates Primary And Secondary Metabolism During Infection By The Rice Blast Fungus: Will Magnaporthe Oryzae’S “Sweet Tooth” Become Its “Achilles’ Heel”?, Jessie Fernandez, Richard A. Wilson Mar 2011

Wilson

Fungal Molecular Plant-Microbe Interactions

Rice blast disease is considered one of the most serious diseases of cultivated rice and is mediated by the causal agent, Magnaporthe oryzae. During infection, dome-shaped fungal cells, called appressoria, form on the surface of the leaf and generate turgor through the accumulation of glycerol. This enormous pressure is directed down onto a thin penetration hypha emerging from the base of the cell, forcing it through the surface of the rice leaf and allowing fungal colonization of the plant interior. The non-reducing disaccharide, trehalose, is present in conidia of M. oryzae and is mobilized during appressorium formation. The first step …

The Geometric And Dynamic Essence Of Phyllotaxis, Pau Atela Mar 2011

The Geometric And Dynamic Essence Of Phyllotaxis, Pau Atela

Mathematics Sciences: Faculty Publications

We present a dynamic geometric model of phyllotaxis based on two postulates, primordia formation and meristem expansion. We find that Fibonacci, Lucas, bijugate and multijugate are all variations of the same unifying phenomenon and that the difference lies on small changes in the position of initial primordia. We explore the set of all initial positions and color-code its points depending on the phyllotactic type of the pattern that arises.

Chromatin is composed of DNA and a variety of modified histones and non-histone proteins, which have an impact on cell differentiation, gene regulation and other key cellular processes. Here we present a genome-wide chromatin landscape for Drosophila melanogaster based on eighteen histone modifications, summarized by nine prevalent combinatorial patterns. Integrative analysis with other data (non-histone chromatin proteins, DNase I hypersensitivity, GRO-Seq reads produced by engaged polymerase, short/long RNA products) reveals discrete characteristics of chromosomes, genes, regulatory elements and other functional domains. We find that active genes display distinct chromatin signatures that are correlated with disparate gene lengths, exon patterns, regulatory …

The Development Of Individual Standing In International Security, Cora True-Frost Mar 2011

The Development Of Individual Standing In International Security, Cora True-Frost

Cardozo Law Review

Until quite recently, individuals were not able to challenge United Nations Security Council (Council) action through international-level mechanisms, and were forced to rely instead on United Nations (UN) member states in their attempts to obtain relief This lack of direct redress held even if no member state intermediary was available, such as when individuals' assets were frozen or they had been detained under Council authority. Within the last decade, however, the Council granted some such individuals administrative standing to challenge its authority. After so many years of denying individuals standing in international security, the Council's about-face is puzzling. It is …

Critical Race Theory And Education: Mapping A Legacy Of Activism And Scholarship, Kafi D. Kumasi

School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications

This chapter explores the intellectual origins and historical precursors of Critical Race Theory (CRT), a lively branch of critical social theory. One of the goals of this work is to help novice educational scholars learn more about the history of CRT and to specifically see how it is used by contemporary scholars in the field of education to address a range of equity issues. The chapter begins by contextualizing contemporary discourse on race and education. It then chronicles the life work of key individuals whose antiracist, anti- colonial ideas and actions helped lay the foundation for the body of legal …

Signal And Noise In Complex-Valued Sense Mr Image Reconstruction, Daniel B. Rowe, Iain P. Bruce

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

In fMRI, brain images are not measured instantaneously and a volume of images can take two seconds to acquire at a low 64x64 resolution. Significant effort has been put forth on many fronts to decrease image acquisition time including parallel imaging. In parallel imaging, sub-sampled spatial frequency points are measured in parallel and combined to form a single image. Measurement time is decreased at the expense of increased image reconstruction difficulty and time. One significant parallel imaging technique known as SENSE utilizes a complex-valued regression coefficient estimation process with transposes replaced by conjugate transposes. However, in SENSE the noise structure …

Examining The Content Of Mental Health Intake Assessments From A Biopsychosocial Perspective, Lari Meyer, Timothy P. Melchert Mar 2011

Examining The Content Of Mental Health Intake Assessments From A Biopsychosocial Perspective, Lari Meyer, Timothy P. Melchert

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

Psychotherapists’ approach to intake assessment has a major impact on mental health case conceptualization and treatment. Despite the importance of this issue, very little is known about the actual intake assessment practices of therapists providing mental health care in the community. This appears to be the first study that has investigated which aspects of biological, psychological, and sociocultural functioning are documented by therapists in their client intake assessments, how thoroughly these issues are assessed, and how well the information collected is then integrated into the assessment findings and case conceptualization. The examination of 163 client files from 3 mental health …

Activation Of The Basolateral Membrane Cl- Conductance Essential For Electrogenic K+ Secretion Suppresses Electrogenic Cl- Secretion, Quanhua He, Susan T. Halm, Jin Zhang, Dan R. Halm

Neuroscience, Cell Biology & Physiology Faculty Publications

Adrenaline activates transient Cl--secretion and sustained K+-secretion across isolated distal colonic mucosa of guinea pig. The Ca++-activated Cl- channel inhibitor CaCCinh-A01 [30μM] significantly reduced electrogenic K+-secretion, detected as short-circuit current (Isc). This inhibition supported the cell model for K+-secretion in which basolateral membrane Cl- channels provide an exit pathway for Cl- entering the cell via Na+/K+/2Cl--cotransporters. CaCCinh-A01 inhibited both Isc and transepithelial conductance in a concentration dependent manner, IC50 = 6.3 μM. GlyH-101, another Cl- channel …

Assessing The Performance Of Sampling Designs For Measuring The Abundance Of Understory Plants, Ilana L. Abrahamson, Cara R. Nelson, David L.R. Affleck

Forest Management Faculty Publications

Accurate estimation of responses of understory plants to disturbance is essential for understanding the efficacy of management activities. However, the ability to assess changes in the abundance of plants may be hampered by inappropriate sampling methodologies. Conventional methods for sampling understory plants may be precise for common species but may fail to adequately characterize abundance of less common species. We tested conventional (modified Whittaker plots and Daubenmire and point–line intercept transects) and novel (strip adaptive cluster sampling [SACS]) approaches to sampling understory plants to determine their efficacy for quantifying abundance on control and thinned-and-burned treatment units in Pinus ponderosa forests …

Generalized Functional Responses For Species Distributions, Jason Matthiopoulos, Mark Hebblewhite, Geert Aarts, John Fieberg

Wildlife Biology Faculty Publications

Researchers employing resource selection functions (RSFs) and other related methods aim to detect correlates of space-use and mitigate against detrimental environmental change. However, an empirical model fit to data from one place or time is unlikely to capture species responses under different conditions because organisms respond nonlinearly to changes in habitat availability. This phenomenon, known as a functional response in resource selection, has been debated extensively in the RSF literature but continues to be ignored by practitioners for lack of a practical treatment. We therefore extend the RSF approach to enable it to estimate generalized functional responses (GFRs) from spatial …

Menstrual Bleeding Patterns In Adolescents Using Etonogestrel (Eng) Implant, Amit M. Deokar, Wendy Jackson, Hatim A. Omar Mar 2011

Menstrual Bleeding Patterns In Adolescents Using Etonogestrel (Eng) Implant, Amit M. Deokar, Wendy Jackson, Hatim A. Omar

Pediatrics Faculty Publications

Background: Etonogestrel (ENG) implant is an effective method of contraception. The implant is designed to provide contraceptive efficacy for 3 years with a relatively quick return of fertility upon its removal. Menstrual irregularities are not uncommon on long-acting progestins and can often be the factor for discontinuation or removal. A retrospective chart analysis was done on 58 patients who chose to be on the ENG implant. Age ranged from 12 to 24 years. The cycle ranged from 1 to 17 months. The mean length of use of the implant was 10.9 months. Over the 20-month period, 13 ENG implants were …

In Defense Of Noncapital Habeas: A Response To Hoffmann And King, John H. Blume, Sheri Lynn Johnson, Keir M. Weyble

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

For decades, federal habeas corpus review of state court judgments has generated wide-ranging, sometimes heated, debate among judges, policymakers, and scholars. In their 2009 Essay, Rethinking the Federal Role in State Criminal Justice, Professors Joseph L. Hoffmann and Nancy J. King added their voices to the exchange, contending that federal habeas corpus review of noncapital state court convictions and sentences should, with narrow exceptions, be abolished. They contend that the expenditure of money, time, and effort necessary to provide review in such cases is no longer justifiable and that those resources should be redirected to creating a federal initiative for …

Policy And Practice: An Analysis Of The Implementation Of Supported Employment In Nebraska, Heng-Hsian N. Liu Mar 2011

Policy And Practice: An Analysis Of The Implementation Of Supported Employment In Nebraska, Heng-Hsian N. Liu

Department of Psychology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Supported employment (SE) is an evidence-based practice (EBP) for persons with severe mental illness (SMI) aimed at competitive employment.  SE has a large evidence base, demonstrating outcomes across settings and populations. SE has been promoted by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services) and widely disseminated through the internet via a “community tool-kit” sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

The SE literature expresses the opinion that state governments can successfully implement SE.  Researchers have developed implementation guidelines and identified stages of statewide implementation; however, most SE implementation …

Parthenolide Blocks Cocaine’S Effect On Spontaneous Firing Activity Of Dopaminergic Neurons In The Ventral Tegmental Area, David Schwarz, Damaris Bloom, Rocío Castro, Oné R. Pagán, C. A. Jiménez-Rivera Mar 2011

Parthenolide Blocks Cocaine’S Effect On Spontaneous Firing Activity Of Dopaminergic Neurons In The Ventral Tegmental Area, David Schwarz, Damaris Bloom, Rocío Castro, Oné R. Pagán, C. A. Jiménez-Rivera

Biology Faculty Publications

Chronic cocaine administration leads to catecholamine reuptake inhibition which enhances reward and motivational behaviors. Ventral Tegmental Area dopaminergic (VTA DA) neuronal firing is associated with changes in reward predictive signals. Acute cocaine injections inhibit putative VTA DA cell firing in vertebrates. Parthenolide, a compound isolated from the feverfew plant (Tanacetum parthenium), has been shown to substantially inhibit cocaine’s locomotion effects in a planarian animal model (Pagán et al., 2008). Here we investigated the effects of parthenolide on the spontaneous firing activity of putative VTA DA neurons in anesthetized male rats (250-300g). Single-unit recordings were analyzed after intravenous (i.v.) parthenolide administration …

Acta's Constitutional Problem: The Treaty That Is Not A Treaty (Or An Executive Agreement), Sean Flynn Mar 2011

Acta's Constitutional Problem: The Treaty That Is Not A Treaty (Or An Executive Agreement), Sean Flynn

Joint PIJIP/TLS Research Paper Series

The planned entry of the U.S. into the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) poses a unique Constitutional problem. The problem is that the President lacks constitutional authority to bind the U.S. to the agreement without congressional consent; but that lack of authority may not prevent the U.S. from being bound to the agreement under international law. If the administration succeeds in its plan, ACTA may be a binding international treaty (under international law) that is not a treaty (under U.S. Constitutional law).
