Utilizing Universal Probability Of Expression Code (Upc) To Identify Disrupted Pathways In Cancer Samples, Michelle Rachel Withers Mar 2011

Utilizing Universal Probability Of Expression Code (Upc) To Identify Disrupted Pathways In Cancer Samples, Michelle Rachel Withers

Theses and Dissertations

Understanding the role of deregulated biological pathways in cancer samples has the potential to improve cancer treatment, making it more effective by selecting treatments that reverse the biological cause of the cancer. One of the challenges with pathway analysis is identifying a deregulated pathway in a given sample. This project develops the Universal Probability of Expression Code (UPC), a profile of a single deregulated biological path- way, and projects it into a cancer cell to determine if it is present. One of the benefits of this method is that rather than use information from a single over-expressed gene, it pro- …

Design Of A Protective Single-Dose Intranasal Nanoparticle-Based Vaccine Platform For Respiratory Infectious Diseases, Bret D. Ulery, Devender Kumar, Amanda E. Ramer-Tait, Dennis W. Metzger, Michael J. Wannemeuhler, Balaji Narasimhan

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

Despite the successes provided by vaccination, many challenges still exist with respect to controlling new and re-emerging infectious diseases. Innovative vaccine platforms composed of adaptable adjuvants able to appropriately modulate immune responses, induce long-lived immunity in a single dose, and deliver immunogens in a safe and stable manner via multiple routes of administration are needed. This work describes the development of a novel biodegradable polyanhydride nanoparticle-based vaccine platform administered as a single intranasal dose that induced long-lived protective immunity against respiratory disease caused by Yesinia pestis, the causative agent of pneumonic plague. Relative to the responses induced by the …

The Epidemiology Of Human Rabies Postexposure Prophylaxis In Virginia, 2002 And 2003, Marilyn Goss Haskell Mar 2011

The Epidemiology Of Human Rabies Postexposure Prophylaxis In Virginia, 2002 And 2003, Marilyn Goss Haskell

Theses and Dissertations

Objective: To describe a sample that received human rabies postexposure prophylaxis (PEP) in Virginia as a result of animal exposures in 2002 and 2003 and to determine the extent to which PEP decisions were appropriate. Methods: PEP surveillance data were requested from 35 Virginia health districts within 5 regions. Retrospective chart review was used to gather demographic, exposure and source animal data from patient records and animal exposure reports. Descriptive statistics are presented. True exposures and appropriateness of PEP were defined using the 2004 Virginia Rabies Control Guidelines and the Recommendations of the 1999 Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. The 2003 …

The Impacts On Education Of Legalizing Same-Sex Marriage And Lessons From Abortion Jurisprudence, Lynn D. Wardle Mar 2011

The Impacts On Education Of Legalizing Same-Sex Marriage And Lessons From Abortion Jurisprudence, Lynn D. Wardle

Brigham Young University Education and Law Journal

One of the most contentious issues to arise in public policy debates concerning the legalization of same-sex marriage is whether legalizing same-sex marriage has a significant detrimental impact on education, particularly public education. However, legal scholarly and professional consideration of this issue is scarce and one sided. This article reviews the evidence that legalizing same-sex marriage has had a serious, profoundly controversial, and arguably detrimental impact on public education. It then explains why legalization of same-sex marriage must have some impact on educational curriculum. When the meaning of marriage changes it must be reflected in the curriculum that covers that …

A Study Of Gradient Climbing Technique Using Cluster Space Control Of Multi-Robot Systems, Vincent Michael Howard Mar 2011

A Study Of Gradient Climbing Technique Using Cluster Space Control Of Multi-Robot Systems, Vincent Michael Howard

Mechanical Engineering Master's Theses

The design of the multi-robot system for distributed sensing and gradient climbing focuses on the capability to optimize the performance of tasks simultaneously. The strategy is to utilize the cluster’s redundancy and flexibility to gain and maximize the overall coverage of surveying parameters so as to surpass the performance of any single robot. The collaborative nature of the cluster provides a more efficient and effective platform for collecting data and conducting fieldwork. The purpose of this study is to explore the existing cluster space control technique to show effective gradient-based navigation, particularly that of climbing a gradient in a sensed …

In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.
