Adaptation And Validation Of Food Product Specific Analytical Methods For Monitoring Prebiotics Present In Different Types Of Processed Food Matrices, Rebbeca M. Duar
Adaptation And Validation Of Food Product Specific Analytical Methods For Monitoring Prebiotics Present In Different Types Of Processed Food Matrices, Rebbeca M. Duar
Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Prebiotic carbohydrates are now added to a variety of processed foods to beneficially affect the gut microbial composition and activities. However, published data remain limited on the stability of prebiotics during food processes, such as baking, extrusion, pasteurization, high temperature heating, low pH condition, etc. As the complexity of the food matrix may also affect the ability to test for prebiotics, product specific analytical methods, including UV-vis spectroscopy, GC and HPLC, were developed and validated to monitor the stability of FOS, inulin and GOS in different types of processed food (breakfast cereal, cookie, muffin, sports drink and a nutritional bar). …
Abiotic Stress Responses In Photosynthetic Organisms, Joseph Msanne
Abiotic Stress Responses In Photosynthetic Organisms, Joseph Msanne
School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Cellular and molecular aspects of abiotic stress responses in Arabidopsis thaliana subjected to cold, drought, and high salinity and in two photosynthetic green alga, Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and Coccomyxa sp. C-169, subjected to nitrogen deprivation were investigated. Cold, drought, and high salinity can negatively affect plant growth and crop production. The first research aimed at determining the physiological functions of the stress-responsive Arabidopsis thaliana RD29A and RD29B genes. Cold, drought, and salt induced both genes; the promoter of RD29Awas found to be more responsive to drought and cold stresses, whereas the promoter of RD29B was highly responsive to salt stress. …

Ecophysiological Responses Of Herbaceous Plants To The Presence Or Absence Of Amorpha Canescens In A Nebraska Sandhills Grassland, Jessica L. Milby
School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Deeply-rooted shrubs are a common component of grasslands. This study investigated the ecophysiological role of Amorpha canescens, a common leguminous shrub, in Sandhills grassland, and response of herbaceous plants to the presence or absence of A. canescens. Two sites were selected for the study at the Gudmundsen Sandhills Laboratory near Whitman, Nebraska – one with A. canescens (G-L) and one without (G-NL) A. canescens. Plant canopy cover and aboveground biomass were characterized on both sites in June and August 2010. Seasonal trends in net photosynthesis (A), stomatal conductance (gs), transpiration (E), water use efficiency (WUE), and predawn …
Studying The Handling Of Heat Stressed Cattle Using The Additive Bi-Logistic Model To Fit Body Temperature, Fan Yang
Department of Statistics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Daily activities consume the energy of heifers, subsequently causing an elevation of body temperature, depending on the ambient conditions. A better understanding of the dynamics of body temperature (Tb) would be helpful when deciding how to process and handle heifers. It would also lead to specific recommendations on moving heifers under different ambient conditions, especially during the summer. In this study, a bi-logistic mixed model is used to describe the dynamics of Tb during the moving event. Data were taken from heifers in pens located at different distances from the heifer work station on four separate summer days under hot …
Quantum Mechanical And Molecular Mechanical Study Of Solvent Effects, Dejun Si
Quantum Mechanical And Molecular Mechanical Study Of Solvent Effects, Dejun Si
Department of Chemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Intermolecular interaction and solvent effects play important roles in determining physical and chemical properties of molecular systems, and must be considered in relevant quantum mechanical (QM) calculations. Due to the high computational cost, full and rigorous QM treatment of both solute and solvent molecules is impractical. Computationally efficient molecular mechanical (MM) methods can be used to describe solvent effects, and combined into QM methods to formulate QM/MM methods. Classical force field method and reaction-field method are the two most popular MM methods. However, the issue of effectively combining MM methods with high-level QM methods remains unsolved. This thesis presents several …
Preparation And Characterization Of Biomimetic Hydroxyapatite-Resorbable Polymer Composites For Hard Tissue Repair, Kristopher R. Hiebner
Preparation And Characterization Of Biomimetic Hydroxyapatite-Resorbable Polymer Composites For Hard Tissue Repair, Kristopher R. Hiebner
Department of Chemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Autografts are the orthopedic “gold standard” for repairing bone voids. Autografts are osteoconductive and do not elicit an immune response, but they are in short supply and require a second surgery to harvest the bone graft. Allografts are currently the most common materials used for the repair of segmental defects in hard tissue. Unlike autografts, allografts can cause an undesirable immune response and the possibility of disease transmission is a major concern. As an alternative to the above approaches, recent research efforts have focused on the use of composite materials made from hydroxyapatite (HA) and bioresorbable polymers, such as poly-L-lactide …
Management Zone Delineation Techniques On Irrigated Corn In Nebraska, Aaron M. Bereuter
Management Zone Delineation Techniques On Irrigated Corn In Nebraska, Aaron M. Bereuter
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Increased interest in site-specific management of irrigated corn in Nebraska has identified the need for a decision-making framework for zone delineation. Zones based on static soil and landscape properties provide a valuable foundation for variable rate management strategies. The purpose of this project was to identify the optimal soil and landscape attributes for generating management zones (MZ) of relative productivity potential. Three producer-managed cornfields across Nebraska with varying soil types, topographic characteristics, and climate regimes were identified as research sites during the 2010 growing season. Nine soil and landscape attributes were identified as potential properties for estimation of productivity potential. …

Peristaltic Induced Flow Of A Two-Layered Suspension In Non-Uniform Channel, Amit Medhavi, Dharmendra Singh, Ajay S. Yadav, Ramesh S. Gautam
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
Peristaltic transport of a two-layered particulate suspension in a non-uniform channel has been investigated. The coupled differential equations for both the fluid and the particle phases in the central as well as in the peripheral layers have been solved and the expression for the flow rate, the pressure rise and the friction force has been derived. The results obtained are discussed both qualitatively and quantitatively in brief. The significance of the particle concentration as well as the peripheral layer has been well explained.
Modeling Spread Of Polio With The Role Of Vaccination, Manju Agarwal, Archana S. Bhadauria
Modeling Spread Of Polio With The Role Of Vaccination, Manju Agarwal, Archana S. Bhadauria
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper, we have proposed and analyzed a nonlinear mathematical model for the spread of Polio in a population with variable size structure including the role of vaccination. A threshold parameter, R , is found that completely determines the stability dynamics and outcome of the disease. It is found that if R 1, the disease free equilibrium is stable and the disease dies out. However, if R >1, there exists a unique endemic equilibrium that is locally asymptotically stable. Conditions for the persistence of the disease are determined by means of Fonda’s theorem. Moreover, numerical simulation of the proposed …
The Principle Of Linearized Stability For Size-Structured Population Models, M. El-Doma
The Principle Of Linearized Stability For Size-Structured Population Models, M. El-Doma
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
The principle of linearized stability for size-structured population dynamics models is proved giving validity to previous stability results reported in, for example, El-Doma (2008-1). In particular, we show that if all the roots of the characteristic equation lie to the left of the imaginary axis then the steady state is locally exponentially stable, and on the other hand, if there is at least one root that lies to the right of the imaginary axis then the steady state is unstable. We also point out cases when there is resonance

Cost-Effective Binomial Sequential Sampling Of Western Bean Cutworm, Striacosta Albicosta (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), Egg Masses In Corn, S. Paula-Moraes, E. C. Burkness, Thomas E. Hunt, Robert Wright, Gary Hein, W. D. Hutchinson
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Striacosta albicosta (Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), is a native pest of dry beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) and corn (Zea mays L.). As a result of larval feeding damage on corn ears, S. albicosta has a narrow treatment window; thus, early detection of the pest in the field is essential, and egg mass sampling has become a popular monitoring tool. Three action thresholds for field and sweet corn currently are used by crop consultants, including 4% of plants infested with egg masses on sweet corn in the silking-tasseling stage, 8% of plants infested with egg masses on field corn with …
2012 Nebraska Crop Budgets, Roger K. Wilson
2012 Nebraska Crop Budgets, Roger K. Wilson
Cornhusker Economics
Overall, average projected cash costs per unit of production for 2012 are almost 15 percent higher than the 2011 projections made in April.
Some of this increase is due to a higher labor wage. Twenty dollars per hour was used as the wage rate in 2012, compared to $12 per hour in 2011. Wage rates vary substantially from one producer to the next, and there is no suitable index for determining a representative wage. It is not likely that actual wages paid increased that much from one year to the next, so this change represents an adjustment upwards as well …

On October 1, 1990, two months after Iraq’s surprise invasion and annexation of Kuwait had put the United States and other members of the international community on a collision course with the Saddam Hussein regime, President George H.W. Bush spoke to the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in New York. He described Iraq’s brutal aggression against its neighbor as “a throwback to another era, a dark relic from a dark time.” Noting that Saddam Hussein had waged a “genocidal poison gas war” against Iraq’s restive Kurdish minority during the 1980s, President Bush hinted that if it ultimately proved necessary to …

Invasion Triangle: An Organizational Framework For Species Invasion, Lora B. Perkins, Elizabeth A. Leger, Robert S. Nowak
Invasion Triangle: An Organizational Framework For Species Invasion, Lora B. Perkins, Elizabeth A. Leger, Robert S. Nowak
Natural Resource Management Faculty Publications
Species invasion is a complex, multifactor process. To encapsulate this complexity into an intuitively appealing, simple, and straightforward manner, we present an organizational framework in the form of an invasion triangle. The invasion triangle is an adaptation of the disease triangle used by plant pathologists to help envision and evaluate interactions among a host, a pathogen, and an environment. Our modification of this framework for invasive species incorporates the major processes that result in invasion as the three sides of the triangle: (1) attributes of the potential invader; (2) biotic characteristics of a potentially invaded site; and (3) environmental conditions …

Gingival Crevicular Fluid (Gcf) Levels Of Interleukin-6 (Il-6), Soluble Glycoprotein 130 (Sgp130), And Soluble Interleukin-6 Receptor (Sil-6r) During Orthodontic Tooth Movement, Mathue Gene Faulkner
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Introduction: Orthodontic tooth movement requires the precise coordination of a multitude of biological factors in order for proper bone remodeling to occur. Cytokines, such as Interleukin-6 (IL-6), play a critical role in the communication necessary for both bone resorption and bone apposition. IL-6 reacts with receptor proteins, such as soluble IL-6 receptor (sIL-6R), on target cells in order to transmit signals important to both osteoclast and osteoblast activities. Soluble glycoprotein 130 (sgp130), on the other hand, acts as a natural inhibitor to IL-6 activity. The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the levels of IL-6, sIL-6R, and sgp130 …

Using Principal Component Analysis For Early Fault Detection In Louisville Water Distribution System., Kevin M. Kastensmidt
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This research dealt with the examination of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) information of a water distribution system through Principal Component Analysis (PCA). PCA is a mathematical method to convert a set of possibly correlated data into a set of fewer variables called principal components. In a SCADA environment, possibly hundreds of data points such as booster pumps, storage tanks, pressure reducing valves, and others constantly provide operational statistics including water pressure, tank capacity, and more. This vast amount of data can be difficult to analyze in its entirety, especially to detect issues in the distribution system. PCA was …

Thermal Analysis Of Lead Zirconate Titanate Thin Films Using Digital Image Correlation., Brek J. Meuris
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Lead Zirconate Titanate (PZT), known for its ferroelectric properties, is widely used in micro-electromechanical (MEMS) and nano-electromechanical (NEMS) devices. PZT is a ceramic material that is most commonly found in its sol gel form, which allows for a relatively simple and cost-effective means of deposition and device fabrication. The material properties of PZT have been subject to significant research; however, the material properties of PZT sol gels remain largely unknown. In an effort to further understand thermal strain development, a combination of thermal loading and digital image correlation (DIC) were used to analyze the mechanical response of PZT sol gel …

Comparative Literature In Chinese And An Interview With Yue, Hui Zhang, Daiyun Yue
Comparative Literature In Chinese And An Interview With Yue, Hui Zhang, Daiyun Yue
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In their article "Comparative Literature in Chinese and an Interview with Daiyun Yue" Hui Zhang and Daiyun Yue present a review of the discipline of comparative literature based on an interview with Yue (2010). Because Yue's work with comparative literature is intertwined with her personal journey, the interview sheds light on other Chinese scholars and their work who would not be known audiences outside China. The interview also touches on the academic and political reasons why the joint dualisms of "ancient/modern" and "Chinese/foreign" continue to be major structuring principles of the discipline in China, as well as how the development …

About The Human Condition In The Works Of Dickens And Marx, Ami E. Stearns, Thomas J. Burns
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In their article "About the Human Condition in the Works of Dickens and Marx" Ami E. Stearns and Thomas J. Burns contribute to the study of Charles Dickens's Industrial Revolution-era fiction by examining his novels in relation to Karl Marx's social philosophy. Stearns and Burns postulate that Dickens relies on Marxist concepts of class consciousness, sacrifice, revolution, social antitheses, and social injustice to weave his narratives and compare and discuss six of Dickens' novels: A Tale of Two Cities, A Christmas Carol, David Copperfield, Oliver Twist, and Great Expectations with three works of Marx: Grundrisse, The Communist Manifesto, …
The Study Of The Parasitic Fauna In Sciaenops Ocellatus, Lower Laguna Madre, Texas, Veronica Abrigo
The Study Of The Parasitic Fauna In Sciaenops Ocellatus, Lower Laguna Madre, Texas, Veronica Abrigo
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
Parasitological investigations provide information on ecosystem health because parasite prevalence and abundance are influenced by biotic and abiotic environmental changes. This survey classified the parasitic fauna of red drum, Sciaenops ocellatus, in the Lower Laguna Madre, TX. Fish (n = 239) were collected from four study sites (May 2005 - June 2006). Parasite identification consisted of digenean and monogenean trematodes, cestodes, larval nematodes, copepods, and protozoans. Parasite prevalence and host length was positively correlated from South Bay (r=0.473), Port Isabel (r=0.533), Arroyo(r=0.314), and Port Mansfield (r=0.630). Significant differences (p<0.001) between zone and parasite prevalence from Arroyo site indicated a higher prevalence of protozoa and monogeneans and reduced prevalence of digeneans. Statistical analyses indicated the greatest difference between Port Isabel and Arroyo sites ( divided by 2= 48.195; p<0.001; df= 14), and the least difference between South Bay and Arroyo sites ( divided by 2= 20.847; p= 1.06; df= 14).

We Can Do It Together: Par1/Par2 Heterodimer Signaling In Vsmcs., Rafal Pawlinski, Michael Holinstat
Department of Medicine Faculty Papers
In this issue, Sevigny and colleagues demonstrate that a protease-activated receptor 1 (PAR1)-PAR2 heterodimer regulates vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) hyperplasia following vascular injury 1. PARs belong to a family of G-protein coupled receptors that are proteolytically activated by a variety of proteases 2, 3. Cleavage of PARs results in intracellular signaling mediated by activation of various G proteins including G12/13, Gq, and Gi 2, 4-6. The PAR family consists of 4 members, PAR1-PAR4, with PARs 1, 3, and 4 being primarily activated by thrombin, while PAR2 is activated by trypsin and …
