Perceived Community Cohesion And The Stress Process In Youth, Karen T. Van Gundy, Nena F. Stracuzzi, Cesar J. Rebellon, Corinna Jenkins Tucker, Ellen S. Cohn Sep 2011

Perceived Community Cohesion And The Stress Process In Youth, Karen T. Van Gundy, Nena F. Stracuzzi, Cesar J. Rebellon, Corinna Jenkins Tucker, Ellen S. Cohn

Psychology

Using survey data from two youth samples, one rural and one urban, we examine the role and significance of perceived community cohesion in the stress process. In particular, we assess the extent to which community attachment and detachment are related to depressed mood, problem substance use, and delinquency net of social statuses, stress exposure, and personal attributes. In addition, we explore the degree to which those dimensions of community cohesion explain or condition the links between the above stress-process components (e.g., social statuses, stress exposure, and personal attributes) and well-being. We find remarkably similar results across samples: community attachment is …

Human Trafficking For Begging, Iveta Cherneva Sep 2011

Human Trafficking For Begging, Iveta Cherneva

Buffalo Human Rights Law Review

Beggars are a part of the street landscape of any major city. However, many of the children and elderly women begging on the streets are forced beggars: victims of trafficking in persons who are part of a beggars ring with an organizational complexity comparable to that of a medium-size business enterprise. The present work focuses on the phenomenon of trafficking in persons for the purpose of begging, arguing for its legal conceptualization under international law. Although it is occasionally mentioned in a limited number of international reports and legal documents as a form of trafficking-related exploitation, forced begging is a …

Death In Irish Prisons: An Examination Of The Causes Of Deaths And The Compliance Of Investigations With The European Convention On Human Rights, Colette Barry Sep 2011

Death In Irish Prisons: An Examination Of The Causes Of Deaths And The Compliance Of Investigations With The European Convention On Human Rights, Colette Barry

Dissertations

Death is a tragic and unfortunately unavoidable aspect of life in a prison. The death of a prisoner raises significant questions in relation to the conditions of confinement and the conduct of the prison authorities. Robust investigations into these deaths can enhance accountability by shedding light on deficits in both institutional and systemic practices, as well as providing families of the deceased with a sense of closure. In Ireland, the investigative responses to prison deaths are neither robust, nor do they allow for significant scrutiny of the circumstances surrounding the death. The causes of deaths in custody and the compatibility …

Field Testing Of Collection Cards For Cannabis Sativa Samples With A Single Hexanucleotide Dna Marker, Lindsey Allgeier, John Hemenway, Nicholas Shirley, Tommy Lanier, Heather Miller Coyle

Forensic Science Publications

Abstract:  The validity and feasibility of using DNA collection cards in the field for preservation and analysis of Cannabis sativa genotypes were investigated using a highly specific hexanucleotide marker. Collection cards were submitted to the National Marijuana Initiative, which selectively trained and managed the collection of specific types of samples from a variety of participating agencies. Samples collected at seizure sites included fresh marijuana leaf samples, dried “dispensary” samples, U.S. border seizures, and hashish. Using a standardized PCR kit with custom-labeled oligonucleotide primers specific to marijuana, collection cards produced eight genotypes and 13 different alleles, extremely low baselines, and no …

Modelling The Causes And Consequences Of Perceptions Of Personal Safety On Public Transport Ridership, Alexa Delbosc, Graham Currie Sep 2011

Modelling The Causes And Consequences Of Perceptions Of Personal Safety On Public Transport Ridership, Alexa Delbosc, Graham Currie

World Transit Research

Fears about personal safety on public transport can have an important impact on ridership. A range of studies have examined different factors that influence perceptions of crime risk. This study uses structural equation modelling to explore the influences on perceptions of safety on public transport and the impact these perceptions have on ridership using a survey sample from Melbourne, Australia. The largest direct influences on feelings of safety on public transport were trust in others and feeling safe in one’s home or on the street at night. Gender and age are commonly-cited influences in the literature but in this model …

A Policy Analysis Of The Criminal Justice (Community Service) (Amendment) Act 2011, Fionnuala Lawlor Sep 2011

A Policy Analysis Of The Criminal Justice (Community Service) (Amendment) Act 2011, Fionnuala Lawlor

Dissertations

The Criminal Justice (Community Service) (Amendment) Act of 2011 is legislation which is aimed at encouraging a greater use of community service orders for people convicted of minor offences. It places a requirement on Judges when considering the imposition of a sentence of 12 months or less to consider the alternative sanction of community service first. This is the first legislation for a number of years which is aimed at diverting offenders from prison and very little is known about the reasoning behind its introduction. This thesis will utilise the framework of policy analysis set out by Kingdon (1995) and …

Reconstruction And The Transformation Of Jury Nullification, Jonathan Bressler Sep 2011

Reconstruction And The Transformation Of Jury Nullification, Jonathan Bressler

University of Chicago Law Review

More than a century ago, the Supreme Court, invoking antebellum judicial precedent, held that juries no longer have the right to "nullify" — that is, to refuse to apply the law as given by the court. Today, however, in assessing the constitutionally protected right to criminal jury trial, the Supreme Court has emphasized originalism, delineating the right's current boundaries by the Founding-era understanding of it. Relying on this Supreme Court jurisprudence, scholars and several federal judges have recently concluded that because Founding-era juries had the right to nullify, the right was beyond the authority of nineteenth-century judges to curtail and …

Absence Of Sense Of Community In E-Learning Courses: Can The Implementation Of Tools Used By Facebook Help?, Stacy Marie Harter Sep 2011

Absence Of Sense Of Community In E-Learning Courses: Can The Implementation Of Tools Used By Facebook Help?, Stacy Marie Harter

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis looks at whether or not a sense of community in e-learning classes can be created by implementing tools such as those used by the social network Facebook. E-learning is convenient for many students, but lacks the same feeling of community found in traditional classroom courses due to the absence of body language and face-to-face communication. Body language is a form of non-verbal communication that allows for a person's feelings and/or ideas to be expressed without the use of spoken language. These elements are missing from online conversation thus hindering meaningful communication and the creation of the sense of …

An Extension Of Life Course Theory Into The Child Welfare System, Shaun M. Gann Sep 2011

An Extension Of Life Course Theory Into The Child Welfare System, Shaun M. Gann

Theses and Dissertations

Over the past 20 years, Sampson and Laub's age-graded theory of informal social control, or life course theory, has become the epitome of developmental criminological theories. Life course theory is based on the premise of life trajectories that are influenced by turning points. Much research has examined possible turning points in the adult life course, such as marriage, employment, military service, and childbirth. However, few studies have attempted to determine possible turning points in the juvenile life course. In an attempt to address this lack of knowledge on juvenile turning points, this thesis presents an extension of life course theory …

Challenges Of Reentering Society For Incarcerated African-American Men, Monica L. Ricci, Carolyn Mcnamara Barry Sep 2011

Challenges Of Reentering Society For Incarcerated African-American Men, Monica L. Ricci, Carolyn Mcnamara Barry

Modern Psychological Studies

African-American men are at the greatest risk for incarceration. Upon their release from prison, they face tremendous challenges to successful reentry, which explains in part their high recidivism rate. In the current paper, we review the existing literature on the challenges faced by African-American ex-offenders as they strive for successful reentry into society, namely challenges to secure employment and living arrangements, social support assets and challenges, as well as broader community-level challenges of reentry. Policy solutions are then identified to offset these obstacles. Lastly, the limitations of existing literature and future research directions are addressed.

The Effects Of Video Game Play On Academic Performance, Jancee Wright Sep 2011

The Effects Of Video Game Play On Academic Performance, Jancee Wright

Modern Psychological Studies

The purpose of the present research is to determine whether playing video games impacts academic performance as determined by GPA. To accomplish this, 198 participants filled out a Gaming Habits Survey which was analyzed using a series of one-way ANOVAs. The study found that there was a significant effect of player status on GPA at the p < .01 level for the two conditions of player versus non-player [F (1, 169) = 7.08, p = .009]. Comparisons using descriptive statistics indicated that the mean GPA score for the player condition (M = 3.2, SD = .51) was significantly different than the non-player condition (M = 3.4, SD = .47). These results show that participants who indicated that they did play video games had significantly lower GPAs than participants who indicated that they did not play video games.

An Investigation Of Racial Biases Among Rural Police Officers, Emily Pica, Karri Verno Sep 2011

An Investigation Of Racial Biases Among Rural Police Officers, Emily Pica, Karri Verno

Modern Psychological Studies

The current study examined racial biases in rural police systems. Fifty police officers took part in the study. A likert-type scale was used to measure different aspects of racial bias, and a questionnaire with crime descriptions was used. Each police system received either a Caucasian suspect questionnaire or an African American suspect questionnaire. Results indicated that the rural police officers in this study did not exhibit racial biases. There were additional analyses done which showed that female officers are slightly harsher in their treatment of African American suspects compared to male officers. The findings of the current study are similar …
