Little Brother Is Watching And Recording You: Social Control In A Deviant Group, Joshua Wayne Roberts

Online Theses and Dissertations

Since the 1950s social control has mostly been explained from the counteraction of deviance perspective. In this research I examine social control in a broader context, what I call social control as the furtherance of action perspective. In order to accomplish this, I conducted a digital ethnography with a group engaged in deviant behavior. The group has no formal name, but individuals are known by the deviant act they engage in. The act is referred to as "capping", but is best explained as individuals or a group of individuals making screen recordings of live web cam feeds from websites designed …

Court Mandated Treatments: Participation In Alcoholics Anonymous, Ruth Sophia Guerrero

Theses Digitization Project

This study provides a building block for future studies to further explore the meanings of Alcholics Anonymous (A.A.) and what makes it work. It specfically focused on the effects of A.A. on court mandated substance abuse treatment programs. Social workers may not always understand A.A.'s impact because there are no 'experts' providing services, yet it works because of the peer support system within the group and Social Workers need to encourage clients to participate in the court mandated treatment as part of their recovery.

Supermax Confinement: A Descriptive And Theoretical Inquiry, Marisa M. Baumgardner Jan 2011

Supermax Confinement: A Descriptive And Theoretical Inquiry, Marisa M. Baumgardner

Online Theses and Dissertations

In the past few decades, there has been a proliferation of supermax prisons and units across the nation, reflecting the increased use of administrative, isolated segregation. This proliferation is embedded within a broader shift in society towards more punitive measures of disciplining those people convicted of criminal offenses. The primary purpose of this thesis is to examine the proliferation of supermax confinement as a major component of the punitive shift. This is done primarily through the application of contemporary literature that focuses on the sociology of punishment theory. Another purpose of this thesis was to examine and describe the history …

Sexual Offender Registries: Public Safety Or Scarlet Letter?, Marilyn Hiller Jan 2011

Sexual Offender Registries: Public Safety Or Scarlet Letter?, Marilyn Hiller

McNair Scholars Research Journal

Sexual offender legislation has been based on “moral panics” stemming from sensationalized cases (i.e. Wetterling, Kanka, and Klaas). The variety of sex offenders that are treated with blanket punishment is causing collateral consequences which actually create more risk to the public. By comparing the Idaho Sexual Offender Registry with the Idaho Department of Justice Database, this study determined what offenses were being committed after placement on the registry. My research identifies a collateral consequence of unsafe driving conditions. It found that there was a 113% increase of moving traffic related charges and 94% increase of non-moving violations such as driving …

Elections, Wars, And Protests? A Longitudinal Look At Foreign News On Canadian Television, Abby Goodrum, Elizabeth Godo Jan 2011

Elections, Wars, And Protests? A Longitudinal Look At Foreign News On Canadian Television, Abby Goodrum, Elizabeth Godo

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

This study reports on the Canadian data from a recent international content analysis of broadcast news in 18 countries. With a mind to Robert A. Hackett’s longitudinal analysis of foreign news on CBC and CTV in 1989, the current study addresses questions of foreign news prominence, geographic distribution, topic coverage, and variation between networks, noting differences and similarities in the content of foreign news in light of shifting cultural, political, and economic environments; news production processes; and communication technologies. This analysis provides an update to Hackett’s seminal work, painting a picture of the Canadian foreign news landscape two decades later.

“Google Reigns Triumphant”?: Stemming The Tide Of Googlitis Via Collaborative, Situated Information Literacy Instruction, Carol A. Leibiger Jan 2011

“Google Reigns Triumphant”?: Stemming The Tide Of Googlitis Via Collaborative, Situated Information Literacy Instruction, Carol A. Leibiger

Faculty Publications

Googlitis, the over-reliance on search engines for research and the resulting development of poor searching skills, is a recognized problem among today’s students. Google is not an effective research tool because, in addition to encouraging keyword searching at the expense of more powerful subject searching, it only accesses the Surface Web and is driven by advertising. American higher education unwittingly fosters the use of search engines in research by emphasizing results rather than process. Academic librarians emulate teaching faculty in their reliance on lectures, and their course-related instruction is limited in its effectiveness because it is constrained to one-shot, lecture-driven …

The Case For Clear And Convincing Evidence: Do Our Laws Value Property Over Children?, Tricia P. Martland Jan 2011

The Case For Clear And Convincing Evidence: Do Our Laws Value Property Over Children?, Tricia P. Martland

Justice Studies Faculty Publications

Our laws reflect our values. What we value, we make laws to protect. In this article, Tricia Martland describes the child custody statute in North Dakota, which is the only state to use “clear and convincing” standard of evidence. This means that children will not be placed with parents with a history of domestic violence unless there is clear and convincing evidence of their rehabilitation. Other states deem the clear and convincing standard too stringent. Yet this standard is often used with regard to property title. Do our laws indicate that we value things over children? Changing policy to apply …

Federal Drug Sentencing: An Evaluation Of The Consistency, Proportionality, And Fairness Within Cases, Lindsay Barron

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

National drug policy has contributed to prison population growth in the United States. Blacks and Hispanics are minorities in the population, but are overrepresented as defendants in criminal courts and as inmates in prison. The purpose of this research is to evaluate fairness in federal drug sentencing. The current study uses data compiled by the United States Sentencing Commission (USSC) to examine the sentence lengths of federal drug defendants sentenced in 2008. Linear ordinary least squares (OLS) regression is used to model the relationship between race/ethnicity and sentence lengths. The analysis of this research is framed by the focal concerns …

Influences On The Reentry And Rehabilitation Of Ex-Offenders: A Case Study Of First Step Recovery Homes, Luke Christopher Moos Jan 2011

Influences On The Reentry And Rehabilitation Of Ex-Offenders: A Case Study Of First Step Recovery Homes, Luke Christopher Moos

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

With a significant amount of the United States' population incarcerated, scholars and communities are becoming increasingly concerned with ex-offenders return to mainstream society. The risk factors that influenced these individuals' crimes also impact their reentry following incarceration. Community-based therapeutic communities attempt to address these risk factors and facilitate the transition from incarceration to community. The main risk factors of residence, family, financial concerns, and substance abuse must be properly addressed in order for ex-offenders to be successfully reintegrated. This thesis is a case study of the First Step Recovery Homes program of McKeesport, Pennsylvania. It is an examination of the …

Personal Perceptions And Organizational Factors Influencing Police Discretion The Case Of Turkish Patrol Officers' Responsiveness, Hidayet Tasdoven Jan 2011

Personal Perceptions And Organizational Factors Influencing Police Discretion The Case Of Turkish Patrol Officers' Responsiveness, Hidayet Tasdoven

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Police officers make decisions at the street level in a variety of situations that have direct impact on quality of life, justice in society, and individual freedom. These decisions inherently involve the exercise of discretion, since successfully performed police tasks are linked to the officer‘s choosing among alternative courses of action. Appropriateness of unsupervised decisions taken under street contingencies remains questionable in terms of police-behavior legitimacy. Law enforcement agencies seek ways to control excessive discretion to avoid undesired consequences of police discretion and maintain organizational legitimacy. Traditionally, organizations developed reward and sanction structures that aimed to shape officer behavior on …
