Plato's Guardians' Educational Program And The Process Of Regaining Security Back In Egypt After The Revolution, Refai Deena Jan 2011

Plato's Guardians' Educational Program And The Process Of Regaining Security Back In Egypt After The Revolution, Refai Deena

Papers, Posters, and Presentations

A state is like a mosaic piece, in terms of foundation and realization. A mosaic piece is founded or assembled by little glass pieces, and finally realized as a whole piece because of these little other pieces that it contains; the same concept can be applied to a state, as it is formed and founded on multiple bodies and institutions and therefore realized as an entity due to their existence. Additionally, the choice of color and the way the little glass pieces are assembled determine the beauty and value of the mosaic piece, the same case here can also be …

On Saving The Death Penalty: A Comment On Adam Gershowitz’S Statewide Capital Punishment, Eric Berger Jan 2011

On Saving The Death Penalty: A Comment On Adam Gershowitz’S Statewide Capital Punishment, Eric Berger

Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications

In Statewide Capital Punishment: The Case for Eliminating Counties’ Role in the Death Penalty, Professor Adam Gershowitz argues that it is misleading ―to suggest that "the State of Texas is a prolific user of capital punishment." As Gershowitz explains, it is not the State of Texas that prosecutes death penalty cases, but rather counties within the State. In fact, only a few of Texas‘s 254 counties seek capital punishment with any regularity. In this regard, Texas is not anomalous. Other states, such as Pennsylvania and California, also have wide variations among counties‘ imposition of the death penalty, even among …

Baby Boomers At Work: Growing Older And Working More, Eve M. Brank Jan 2011

Baby Boomers At Work: Growing Older And Working More, Eve M. Brank

Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications

In the current chapter, I will first detail the legal framework for workplace age discrimination and court case examples that have largely mirrored race and gender discrimination law. Next, I will discuss the psychological research that details the consequences of age discrimination with a particular focus on the combined effects of stereotype assimilation and notions of deservingness of respect. Last, I will suggest that until we know the causes of age discrimination, we cannot legitimately address its consequences the same way we have addressed other forms of discrimination. Specifically, I will argue that legislating against age discrimination is inherently different …

Organizational Support, Organizational Citizenship Behavior, And Perceived Performance Analysis Of Crime Scene Investigation Units Of Turkish National Police, Aykut Tongur

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Policing is more difficult than ever before in today’s world since types of crime and criminal profiles change as a result of technological development and globalization. Police organizations should review their organizational and operational strategies to improve the fight against contemporary crimes and criminals. Behaviors and performance of police officers are very important in fighting crime. In this struggle, especially today, officers should exhibit organizational citizenship behaviors and perform better. One of the most important factors affecting these two concepts in organizations is organizational support. The literature stresses the social exchange cycle and reciprocity rules in the relationships of organizations …

Occupational Stress And Work-Related Wellbeing Of Turkish National Police (Tnp) Members, Sedat Kula Jan 2011

Occupational Stress And Work-Related Wellbeing Of Turkish National Police (Tnp) Members, Sedat Kula

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Previous studies suggest that the organizational dynamics of police organizations and the nature of police work contribute to law enforcement stress, which in turn reduces job satisfaction and increases burnout. It is also well documented that undesirable organizational factors are more hazardous to the well-being of employees than are the stressors due to nature of police work. The present study examines whether, and to what degree, organizational and operational stresses in law enforcement are associated with job satisfaction, work-related burnout, and supervisor support, holding the effects of age, rank, education, gender, tenure, and shift type constant in the analysis. A …

One of the important elements of organizational performance is trust-building process which deeply depends on leadership efforts of ranked employees and managers. Literature has enough empirical evidence on influence of trust and trusted work environment on organizational performance. Aftermath of recent riots and clashes in Kyrgyzstan Kyrgyz National Police (KNP) officers are demoralized by the actions of both previous and current governments which bear corruption, bribery and clan type of ruling. These facts led to untrustworthy environments and relationships …

Governance And Biosecurity: Strengthening Security And Oversight Of The Nation's Biological Agent Laboratories, Michael Greenberger, Talley Kovacs, Marita Mike Jan 2011

Governance And Biosecurity: Strengthening Security And Oversight Of The Nation's Biological Agent Laboratories, Michael Greenberger, Talley Kovacs, Marita Mike

Faculty Scholarship

Since the advent of the Anthrax attacks in the fall of 2001, the United States has been confronted with a serious policy conundrum. On the one hand, we have strengthened programs that encourage the use of our best scientific resources to develop countermeasures to the weaponization of highly dangerous biopathogens. On the other hand, research on those countermeasures requires the use of the very biopathogens we seek to defeat. There have been many mishaps in the handling of those pathogens, which raises the frightening prospect that the research may be as (or more) dangerous than bioterrorist acts themselves. Indeed, the …

De-Radicalization Program In Indonesian Prisons: Reformation On The Correctional Institution, Milda Istiqomah

Australian Counter Terrorism Conference

De-radicalization program has long been the subject of investigation. There is a steadily growing interest in examining the positive results on how Islamist terrorists agree to abandon violence and leave radicalism. Despite their attractiveness, it is widely accepted that de-radicalization program on terrorism in many countries is still questionable for its effectiveness. This article presents an overview of the de-radicalization program run by Indonesian prisons and investigates critical issues surrounding the analysis of their effectiveness and outcomes. This paper argues that Indonesian prisons and especially its correctional system need to be reformed in order to achieve a successful result of …

Generation Y ; An Exploratory Study Of Worker Experiences, Values And Attitudes In The Federal Government, Antoine D. Moss

ETD Archive

As a result of the unprecedented retirement wave within the federal government, federal agencies are aggressively recruiting young professionals that have been categorized as Generation Y. However, there is currently a lack of systematic research that has been conducted on this new cohort of employees particularly, within the federal government. A lot of the available information that pertains to Generation Y can be classified as pop journalism, as opposed to scholarly research. Furthermore, many federal leaders are utilizing this information along with outdated traditional management assumptions about employee motivation to design and develop their public organizations. This tenuous approach can …

Producing Governable Subjects: Images Of Childhood Old And New, Karen Smith Jan 2011

Producing Governable Subjects: Images Of Childhood Old And New, Karen Smith

Articles

Conceptions of childhood in terms of ‘evil’ and ‘innocence’ transcend time and culture. These conflicting images are deployed by Chris Jenks as the Dionysian and Apollonian models of childhood to symbolize external and internal forms of control. Drawing on the literature on governmentality this paper revisits these models and introduces a third model, the ‘Athenian’ child, analogous and supplementary to those developed by Jenks. This model is necessary in order to take account of relatively recent strategies in the government of childhood, which, predicated on understandings of children in terms of competence and agency, operate via responsibility and reflexivity.

With more positions available than can be filled and the growing need for colleges and universities to produce new generations of school psychologists, it is important to understand what people know about the field. The present study was conducted to examine the relationship between the current level of knowledge that undergraduate students in West Virginia have about the field and the decision to select school psychology as a profession. Participants completed a true/false questionnaire. Results indicated a significant difference in school psychology knowledge between those students …
