Person-Environment Congruence And Academic Achievement Of College Students: An Application Of Holland's Theory, John Michael Hargett
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The purpose of the study was to test the hypothesis presented in Holland's theory that academic achievement is a function of the congruence between students' personality types and their academic environments. Holland asserts that higher levels of stability, satisfaction, and performance are a function of the fit or congruence between students' personality type and the environment in which they reside. The subjects in the study were 741 students who graduated from high school between 1998 and 2007 and matriculated to a private, Catholic, comprehensive university in the mid-South during those years. Students were assigned to one of six Holland personality …
Bias In Hard News Articles From Fox News And Msnbc: An Empirical Assessment Using The Gramulator, Brock Ashton Terwilleger
Bias In Hard News Articles From Fox News And Msnbc: An Empirical Assessment Using The Gramulator, Brock Ashton Terwilleger
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Hard news articles can reflect a media organization's bias. This study assesses bias in hard news articles published by Fox News and MSNBC. More specifically, the study examines bias in the two networks' coverage of elections and immigration. Indicative linguistic features identified by the Gramulator reveal biases in corpora of texts pertaining to these two news topics. The results suggest that the networks exercise selection bias. Furthermore, the findings show that the networks use the same collocations differently and also use different collocations to refer to the same referents.

The Effects Of Revictimization On Coping And Depression In Female Sexual Assault Victims, Cynthia J. Najdowski, Sarah E. Ullman
The Effects Of Revictimization On Coping And Depression In Female Sexual Assault Victims, Cynthia J. Najdowski, Sarah E. Ullman
Psychology Faculty Scholarship
To examine the effects of being revictimized, 555 women completed 2 mail surveys 1 year apart, reporting their experiences of sexual assault, the strategies they used to cope with those experiences, and feelings of depression. Path analyses, controlling for baseline coping and depression, revealed that those who were revictimized during the study reported using more maladaptive and adaptive coping strategies than did those who were not revictimized (β = .11 and β = .16, respectively). Further, women who were revictimized reported more depression than others (β = .15). This effect was explained in part by revictimized women's increased maladaptive coping. …
The Effects Of Job Stress On Law Enforcement Marriages And Methods Of Combating The Job Stress, Richard T. Matthews
The Effects Of Job Stress On Law Enforcement Marriages And Methods Of Combating The Job Stress, Richard T. Matthews
Senior Honors Theses
The reality of how law enforcement stress affects individuals and marriages will be presented in light of its causes and dangers to officers, as well as how the stress affects officers’ marriages. The marital problems stemming from law enforcement stress can progress from producing less spousal interaction and communication issues, to presenting opportunities for infidelity, and eventually result in divorce. Before countering the impact of job stress upon marriage, officers must first deal with the stress individually. Marriages do not have to end as a result of job stress. By seeking family therapy and by relying on God, law enforcement …

Biases In Domestic Violence Criminal Decision Making: Are System Actors Lenient In Domestic Violence Cases?, Silvana Del Valle
Biases In Domestic Violence Criminal Decision Making: Are System Actors Lenient In Domestic Violence Cases?, Silvana Del Valle
Cornell Law School Inter-University Graduate Student Conference Papers
This essay makes a review of studies about the presence of biases against victims in the Judicial Decisionmaking of Domestic Violence (DV) crimes. The global recognition of the phenomenon has promoted a legal reform movement, in which the United States has been part. The first reform in the topic in the US was the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) of 1991. This federal statute detected biases not only in the judges, but also in other criminal prosecution actors -police departments and prosecutors. Then, it introduced research funds and legal tools to fight against biases, under the premise that DV is …

Facing Ethics In Criminal Justice Through A Christian Worldview, Jordan K. Kopko
Senior Honors Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to express the need for young men and women in law enforcement to endure ethical dilemmas through a Christian worldview. Ethical dilemmas and moral struggles in the criminal justice field are described in detail throughout the thesis. In the decision-making process during an ethical dilemma, an officer with a Christian worldview should make better decisions with the added guidance from the Holy Spirit. This thesis delves into the different aspects of ethics including reasons why some police officers make immoral decisions. The ethical issues in criminal justice have been a problem in law enforcement …

Expectations, Fears, And Strategies: Juvenile Offender Thoughts On A Future Outside Of Incarceration, Samantha S. Clinkinbeard, Trusty Zohra
Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
The current article explores the possible selves, or future expectations, of 543 incarcerated juvenile offenders in four Western states in the United States. We argue that juveniles who are able to articulate future expectations and fears and generate concrete strategies for achieving their goals have higher levels of motivational capital (i.e., resources which provide momentum for behavior) and thus greater readiness for transitioning back into society. We found that a majority of juveniles were able to articulate simple expectations about the future; however, less than a quarter recognized the relationship between hopes and fears and connected them to concrete strategies. …

The idea for this play was first hatched in June of 2010. It was summer in Greencastle and with no cable TV and no air-conditioning my roommate and I found the time for many heated, interesting discussions. My roommate was a particularly enterprising individual; his goal was to start a business on the town square, open a convenience store that would tap into Greencastle’s largest market: the DePauw students. Greencastle is a veritable ghost town in the summer. The discussions with my roommate often centered on the topic of this abandonment Greencastle undergoes every May of every year, and the …
