Culturally Sensitive Document Design For An Eastern Asia Audience: Comprehension And Preference, Merridith Smith
Culturally Sensitive Document Design For An Eastern Asia Audience: Comprehension And Preference, Merridith Smith
Theses
An investigation into Eastern Asia audiences in China, Japan, and Korea determined how intercultural communication affects non-native readers' comprehension and perception of a document design. The study, an after-only experiment, used a small-sized sample from people who were In-Country Reviewers (ICRs) and knew of medical products in Eastern Asia and had knowledge in the area's local language. The subjects read an indigenously or non-indigenously designed document, and self-reported their comprehension and preferences for formatting style. Although the statistics showed no significant difference between the groups, on any variable tested (language, comprehension, and format), the qualitative data that were gathered can …

Rumbling In The Benthos: Acoustic Ecology Of The California Mantis Shrimp Hemisquilla Californiensis, E. Staaterman, C. Clark, A. Gallagher, M. Devries, T. Claverie, S. Patek
Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences
Although much research has focused on acoustic mapping and exploration of the benthic environment, little is known about the acoustic ecology of benthic organisms, particularly benthic crustaceans. Through the use of a coupled audio–video system, a hydrophone array, and an autonomous recording unit, we tested several hypotheses about the field acoustics of a benthic marine crustacean, Hemisquilla californiensis. Living in muddy burrows in southern California, these large mantis shrimp produce low frequency ‘rumbles’ through muscle vibrations. First, we tested whether acoustic signals are similar in the field and in the laboratory, and discovered that field-produced rumbles are more acoustically and …

Sci-Tech News
The traditional written research paper is out. Visual communication is in! At least for many lucky students who are a part of the increasing movement toward paper-alternative assignments using posters, presentations, and video to present their sci-tech research. Communicating science and technology concepts visually using graphics, images, artwork, and diagrams is not only an important learning tool, but also a common practice among researchers who share their breakthroughs through presentations, and also new media like blogs, websites, and twitter.
These web resources house massive collections of science and technology photos that can be used, with proper citation, to enrich your …

Modern college students traverse the boundaries of traditional literacy daily. Maturing alongside Web 2.0 and multimodal social networking, these young people tweet, blog, email, film, photograph, illustrate, hyperlink, and compose their lives regardless of formal instruction. Therefore rhetorically analyzing a student's recreational play with image, video, audio, and oral mediums often proves helpful for writing instructors who wish to better mentor and engage the communicative capacities of those born in the late 20th century and after. Yet few educators have actively pursued this line of inquiry over the last couple of decades. Many continue to favor traditional pairing of academic …

Arts Education In Swedish Teacher Training – What’S At Stake?, Monica Lindgren, Claes Ericsson
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Swedish teacher education has undergone several reforms in recent decades aimed at incorporating teacher education into the university setting and strengthening the teaching profession. In view of earlier research that has shown how arts education in schools is ruled by dominant knowledge ideologies, the purpose of the project is to critically scrutinize current discourses related to arts learning and arts education in teacher education. The study is based on social constructionist theory and data were collected by various means, including 19 focus group interviews with teachers and students at 10 Swedish teacher education institutes.
Our analysis shows that an academic …

Virtual Tourism: Identifying The Factors That Affect A Tourist's Experience And Behavioral Intentions In A 3d Virtual World, Yu-Chih Huang
All Dissertations
Given the increase in the use of technologies within the tourism industry, particularly the rising interest in virtual worlds such as Second Life, the purpose of this study is to identify the factors related to the 3D virtual tourism experience and behavioral intentions after visiting a virtual tourism destination. Two theories, the Technology Acceptance Model and Self-Determination Theory, were used to guide this study, both of which were found to be useful frameworks. Basecamp Maasai Mara in Second Life was selected as the research site, designed and developed through a collaborative effort at Clemson University. The results revealed that technological …

Online Education Of Public Participants In The Data Collection Process For The Monitoring Of Giant Hogweed In Latvia, Rebecca Leigh Almond
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Utilization of Public Participation with Geographic Information Sciences is a method intended to document the locations and spread of poisonous, invasive Giant Hogweed in Latvia. To reach students in an international setting, a website and tutorials trained participants about the characteristics and dangers of the plant, GPS concepts, and the data collection process. To ensure safe and accurate data collection, students were tested on their mastery of educational materials, evaluated on their ability to collect data in the field, and were questioned about their experience with the project. The results determined that students who take the online tutorial become better …

Comparison Between Structural Similarity Index Metric And Human Perception, Tanmayi Chilakamarthi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This thesis examines the image quality assessment using Structural Similarity Index Metric (SSIM). The performance of Structural Similarity Index Metric was evaluated by comparing Mean Structural Similarity Index (MSSIM) index values with the Probability of Identification (PID) values. The perception experiments were designed for letter images with blur and letter images with blur and noise to obtain the PID values from an ensemble of observers. The other set of images used in this study were tank images for which PID data existed. All the images used in the experiment belong to Gaussian and Exponential filter shapes at various blur levels. …
The Dao Of Graphic Design— A Study Of Interrelationship Between The Daodejing In Chinese Daoism And Graphic Design, Rong Chen
Theses
Dao has been accumulated for centuries and still remains strong and pertinent to the world today. It is a complex and intriguing philosophy that has many branches and colors. This paper is an analysis of the similarities and differences between the principles held in Daoism and Graphic Design. It is also an interpretation from my personal understanding of both. The concepts derived from my research are presented through several examples, which included the following design principles: Unity, Nature and Wu Wei. The purpose of this thesis is to serve as a bridge, which links concepts of graphic design with Daoism. …

Visual And Textual Appeals In Banner Advertising: A Content Analysis, Louis Perez
Theses
This study investigated textual and visual variables of banner advertisements. A number of research questions were addressed by content analyzing banner advertisements from social media and social networking Websites, including YouTube and Facebook. Implications of linking types of banner advertisements to types of social media sites, including differences between visual and textual content of banner advertisements, are addressed. Results indicate that there were notable differences between banner advertisements found on these sites. Ads are more likely to contain greater visual aspects such as animation on social media sites than they are on social networking sites. Further studies should examine how …
