Breaking Bad News In Healthcare Organizations: Application Of The Spikes Protocol, C. W. Vonbergen, Robert E. Stevens, David Loudon
Breaking Bad News In Healthcare Organizations: Application Of The Spikes Protocol, C. W. Vonbergen, Robert E. Stevens, David Loudon
Administrative Issues Journal
Organizational downsizing has increased exponentially worldwide and is also affecting the healthcare industry. It is one thing to speak abstractly of the need to reduce costs and quite another to actually tell a worker the bad news that he or she has been laid off. This paper offers practical advice to healthcare managers on conducting unpleasant conversations with employees based on a widely used medical model—the SPIKES protocol. This strategy has been extensively employed by physicians and other health care professionals who frequently communicate negative information to patients and is offered as an approach that can be easily and effectively …

Crimes Committed By Tattooed Female Offenders And The Significance Of Body Art Content And Location, Megan Sullivan
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
The body is a site of manipulation, mutilation, and decoration, evident through centuries of body marking and tattooing. There is a very compelling relationship between tattooed individuals and crime, and this descriptive study investigates the presence of tattoos amongst female offenders. Research analysis identified the relationship between tattoos and convicted female offenders, along with the significance of the content and location of the offenders' tattoos.

A Foreigner’S Gaze On The Micro-Culture Of The Car-Rapide—Senegalese Values Vs. Monetary Lust, Merrill Pierce
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
The vibrant, chaotic, and interactive Car Rapide, a poignant micro-culture in Dakar, is a visually communicative entity and social space in Senegal’s transportation system. From an outsider’s gaze, this project addresses the history, artistic and religious significance, inner-workings of the system of employees, and present day implications of the car-rapide. The car-rapide emerges as the embodiment of both valuable and challenging aspects of Senegalese culture.

Visual Framing Of Patriotism And National Identity On The Covers Of Der Spiegel, Andrea Pyka, Scott B. Fosdick, William Tillinghast
Visual Framing Of Patriotism And National Identity On The Covers Of Der Spiegel, Andrea Pyka, Scott B. Fosdick, William Tillinghast
Faculty Publications
Patriotism in Germany has been a controversial issue since the Nazi era. Despite the fear and hesitations surrounding the idea of German pride and national identity, Der Spiegel, one of Germany's major national news magazines, showed an increasing visual presence of national identity symbols on its covers following key historical events: the building of the Berlin Wall, the reunification of Germany, the adoption of the euro, and the 2006 World Cup.
Healing Images: A Historical Outline Of Their Use In Western Medical And Psychotherapeutic Traditions, Anees A. Sheikh
Healing Images: A Historical Outline Of Their Use In Western Medical And Psychotherapeutic Traditions, Anees A. Sheikh
Psychology Faculty Research and Publications
The ancient literature of numerous cultures abounds with accounts of spectacular cures resulting from the imaging process. These accounts are now being corroborated by a growing body of clinical and experimental evidence. The effectiveness of mental imagery in the treatment of a wide variety of problems has been convincingly documented (Sheikh, 1983). This paper outlines the use of imagery in Western medical as well as psychotherapeutic traditions. It concludes with a discussion of the reasons that make imagery an excellent healing agent.

A Content Analysis of How Al Jazeera English and Arabic Channels Framed the War on Gaza The purpose of this study was to examine how Al Jazeera channels; Al Jazeera English channel and Al Jazeera Arabic Channel framed the war on Gaza from December 27, 2008 to January 18, 2009. A total of 220 news stories were analyzed, with 110 stories from each channel. The study showed that the two channels follow the same trends in covering the Palestinian Israeli conflict, often focusing on the Human disaster script and turning a political conflict into a humanitarian crisis that requires support …
Appropriateness In Design, Wing Man, Karen Ma
Appropriateness In Design, Wing Man, Karen Ma
Lingnan Theses
When the term ‘design object’ is used to refer to artifacts, we presuppose that they can serve mundane functions and provide aesthetic pleasure. In many cases, the visual form of a design object is a result of achieving aesthetic function and practical function. What is the relation between these two functions? In the design process, designers also strike a balance between aesthetic pursuit, utilitarian purpose and other factors, such as environmental protection. What is the balance of these aims (aesthetic aim and the non-aesthetic aims)? My research on this topic suggests that it may be useful to conceive it in …

Aggression And Welfare In A Common Aquarium Fish, The Midas Cichlid, Ronald G. Oldfield
Aggression And Welfare In A Common Aquarium Fish, The Midas Cichlid, Ronald G. Oldfield
Faculty Scholarship
Many species of fishes are aggressive when placed in small aquaria. Aggression can negatively affect the welfare of those individuals toward whom it is directed. Animals may behave aggressively in order to defend resources such as food, shelter, mates, and offspring. The decision to defend depends on the distribution of resources and on ecological factors such as number of competitors, amount of available space, and amount of habitat complexity. This study tested the effects of these factors on aggression in a common aquarium fish, the Midas cichlid (Amphilophus citrinellus). The study found that time spent behaving aggressively was not associated …

So, What Is Terrorism? Framing The 9/11 Attacks In African Editorial Cartoons, Duncan Mainye Omanga
So, What Is Terrorism? Framing The 9/11 Attacks In African Editorial Cartoons, Duncan Mainye Omanga
Re-visioning Terrorism
As artifacts of political culture, editorial cartoons reveal prevalent public opinion on a particular issue with direct or indirect effects to members of society. The central question addressed in this paper is how editorial cartoons in Kenya’s press framed the 9/11 event and the extent to which such framing accorded or denied terrorists, government agencies and other stakeholders legitimacy. Specifically, the section probes the extent to which the dominant frames careered, and whether framing tilted away or towards legitimizing or delegitimizing terrorism. From these, conclusions are drawn on the extent to which particular aspects of knowledge, opinion or ideologies were …
