Markets And Morality, Jagdish N. Bhagwati Jan 2011

Markets And Morality, Jagdish N. Bhagwati

Faculty Scholarship

The paper addresses two issues. First, economics has evolved both as a positive science and, from moral philosophy, also as a normative discipline. Advancing the public good requires that public policy walk on both these legs. Second, the criticism has been forcefully made that markets undermine morality. This contention is refuted in several ways.

Perceptions Of Heart Rate Monitor Use In High School Physical Education Classes., Julie A. Partridge, Kristi Mcclary King, Wei Ban

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Incorporating technology into the physical education curriculum is becoming a popular strategy in which teachers can assess, motivate, and provide feedback to students regarding their physical activity participation during class. The purpose of this exploratory study was to gain a greater understanding of high school students’ perceptions of using heart rate monitors during physical education class. Qualitative data were collected through focus groups with students who had utilized heart rate monitors during the previous year of physical education class. Data were analyzed through inductive content analysis. Three major themes emerged from the data and indicated that 1) the use of …

Measuring Use Of Resourcefulness Skills: Psychometric Testing Of A New Scale, Abir K. Bekhet Jan 2011

Measuring Use Of Resourcefulness Skills: Psychometric Testing Of A New Scale, Abir K. Bekhet

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Highly resourceful individuals have been found better able to meet life's challenges and to experience more positive health outcomes. Although psychometrically sound measures of resourcefulness exist and resourcefulness training trials show that the intervention increases adaptive functioning and enhances quality of life, there is no direct measure of intervention fidelity. This study examined the reliability and validity of an 8-item Resourcefulness Skills Scale (RSS), which measures the frequency with which intervention recipients use specific resourcefulness skills. The RSS was found to have acceptable internal consistency ( = .78), criterion-related validity ('s = .50 and .52 with other resourcefulness scales), and …

Non-Partisan ‘Get-Out-The-Vote’ Efforts And Policy Outcomes, Dan Kovenock, Brian Roberson Jan 2011

Non-Partisan ‘Get-Out-The-Vote’ Efforts And Policy Outcomes, Dan Kovenock, Brian Roberson

Economics Faculty Articles and Research

This paper utilizes a simple model of redistributive politics with voter abstention to analyze the impact of nonpartisan ‘get-out-the-vote’ efforts on policy outcomes. Although such efforts are often promoted on the grounds that they provide the social benefit of increasing participation in the electoral process, we find that they have a meaningful impact on policy outcomes and are an important political influence activity for nonprofit advocacy organizations. In equilibrium, nonpartisan gotv efforts are more likely to arise in those segments of the electorate that are sufficiently small and disenfranchised (as measured by the ex ante voter abstention rate). Among those …

Acting Virtuous: Chastity, Theatricality, And The Tragedie Of Mariam, Kent Lehnhof Jan 2011

Acting Virtuous: Chastity, Theatricality, And The Tragedie Of Mariam, Kent Lehnhof

English Faculty Books and Book Chapters

Given the interrelation of female chastity and female theatricality in early modem discourses, it comes as no surprise that both figure importantly in what is believed to be the first original English drama to be written by a woman. As Elizabeth Cary explores a Jewish queen 's sexual purity in The Tragedie of Mariam, she does so by concentrating on questions of performance. Cary's title character explicitly abjures theatricality even as she embraces chastity, creating a fissure in Renaissance discourses on women that threatens to swallow up the antifeminist idea that female chastity is always an act.

Evangelical Literacies: Predestination And Print, 1739-1740, Jennifer Snead

Religion in the Age of Enlightenment

In his 1744 The Reverend Mr. Whitefield's Answer to the Bishop of London's Last Pastoral Letter, the controversial evangelical George Whitefield claimed that he would indeed own up to any of his writings found "blameable in any Respect:' Reader John Holmes of Exeter commented in the margins of his copy, "Oh ho! And how do you know and distinguish your mistakes from verities? Supposing that there are any verities and realities:'1 Frank Lambert, in his 1994 study of Whitefield in the context of transatlantic print culture, cites Holmes's marginalia as an instance of "readers... [ engaging] in dialogue with writers …

A Theory Of Entangled Political Economy, With Application To Tarp And Nra, Adam Smith Jan 2011

A Theory Of Entangled Political Economy, With Application To Tarp And Nra, Adam Smith

Economics Department Faculty Publications & Research

The recent financial crisis has provoked a raft of contending claims as to whether the cause of the crisis is better attributed to market failure or political failure. Such claims are predicated on a presumption that markets and polities are meaningfully separate entities. To the contrary, we argue that contemporary arrangements create an entangled political economy that renders theorizing based on separation often misleading. Within this alternative framework of entangled political economy, we illuminate both the recent Troubled Assets Relief Program (TARP) and the New Deal’s National Recovery Administration (NRA).

Networks Of Mobilization: Student Involvement In A Municipal Election, R Huckfeldt, Matthew T. Pietryka, Jack Reilly, Ronald Rapoport, Daniel M. Maliniak, Patrick Miller Jan 2011

Networks Of Mobilization: Student Involvement In A Municipal Election, R Huckfeldt, Matthew T. Pietryka, Jack Reilly, Ronald Rapoport, Daniel M. Maliniak, Patrick Miller

2011

An enduring issue in the study of political participation is the extent to which political awareness and engagement are socially or individually motivated.  We address these issues in the context of a municipal election which generated a high level of political engagement on the part of college students for whom the election was relevant.  An effort was made to interview all these students using an on-line survey, and the students were asked to provide information on their friendship networks.  The paper demonstrates that awareness and engagement are not simply a consequence of individually defined interests and awareness, but rather that …

The Triad That Binds: Financial Analysts And Board Interlocks, Sun Hyun Park Jan 2011

The Triad That Binds: Financial Analysts And Board Interlocks, Sun Hyun Park

2011

This study explores the structural embeddedness of board interlocks in financial analysts’ firm coverage ties. Drawing on the theories of triangular ties, I conceptualize the relationship between financial analysts, a focal CEO, and the interlock director as a triad and examine how the positivity or negativity of analyst stock recommendations regarding the focal firm CEO and the interlock directors influence the maintenance of the board interlock ties. The theoretical perspectives and empirical findings of this study suggest that a structural shift from open to closed triad, where the focal firm CEO and the interlock director are followed by a common …

Adhd And Criminality: A Primer On The Genetic, Neurobiological, Evolutionary, And Treatment Literature For Criminologists, Catrina M. Schilling, Anthony Walsh, Ilhong Yun Jan 2011

Adhd And Criminality: A Primer On The Genetic, Neurobiological, Evolutionary, And Treatment Literature For Criminologists, Catrina M. Schilling, Anthony Walsh, Ilhong Yun

Criminal Justice Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper is a primer on ADHD and its major comorbidities for criminologists unfamiliar with the genetic, neurobiological, and evolutionary literature on the subject. With Unnerver, Cullen & Pratt (2003) we are surprised that criminologists do not pay sufficient attention to a disorder that is found at rates in prisons around the world greatly exceeding in prevalence in the general population. Unnerver, Cullen & Pratt (2003) believe that it is because ADHD research has been carried out primarily by biomedical researchers and that criminologists tend to shy away from anything smacking of biology. We believe that the special expertise of …

Stakeholders, Entrepreneurial Rent And Bounded Self-Interest, Douglas A. Bosse, Jeffrey S. Harrison Jan 2011

Stakeholders, Entrepreneurial Rent And Bounded Self-Interest, Douglas A. Bosse, Jeffrey S. Harrison

Management Faculty Publications

This paper examines how the change from an assumption of pure self-interest to an assumption of bounded self-interest alters basic propositions regarding the way entrepreneurs select, negotiate with and manage relationships with their initial set of stakeholders. Although a purely economic approach would focus on material cost as the sole consideration when conducting these activities, we argue that non-material factors such as reciprocity and fairness are potent forces during the initial resource acquisition process. We explain that non-material considerations are accounted for in negotiations with stakeholders and positive reciprocity is encouraged through openly sharing information with stakeholders about the value …

Dainty Hands: Perceptions Of Women And Crime In Sherlock Holmes Stories, Hadar Aviram Jan 2011

Dainty Hands: Perceptions Of Women And Crime In Sherlock Holmes Stories, Hadar Aviram

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

For the last 150 years, conventional wisdom among criminologists saw crime as a predominantly male phenomenon. Recent socio-historical research has challenged this premise, showing a decline in the presence of women in the process as criminal defendants. Cultural studies have attributed this decline to a shift in perception of female deviance, from autonomy and enterprise to passivity and predetermination. This Article follows this transition in the cultural image of women and crime through the lens of Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories. The women in the stories are not clearly distinguished by their role in the criminal enterprise (perpetrators, accomplices, …

Mentoring For A Public Good, George Kawamoto Jan 2011

Mentoring For A Public Good, George Kawamoto

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

Even into the 1970s, Asian American attorneys faced significant discrimination and difficulty finding work in law firms. Because of these injustices and a desire to right them, social justice lawyering became a hallmark of that generation of Asian American lawyers. Litigating civil rights violations in cases such as Korematsu v. United States allowed senior Asian American attorneys to mentor a younger generation of lawyers. Although more minority attorneys now are offered work in firms and the appearance of racism has diminished, social justice mentoring remains vital to today's Asian American legal community. Teaming minority law students and young attorneys with …

Court-Connected Mediation And Minorities: A Report Card, Sharon Press Jan 2011

Court-Connected Mediation And Minorities: A Report Card, Sharon Press

Faculty Scholarship

Critical race theorists have raised important concerns about alternative dispute resolution in general and mediation specifically. Many of the critiques were written prior to the ascendency of court-connected mediation. To set the context, Part II of this article begins with a brief history of the court-connected mediation movement in the United States. In Part III, the critiques of mediation, specifically focusing on those related to minorities, are summarized. Part IV identifies some of the flaws in the critiques as related to court-connected mediation. Part V includes actions that court programs can undertake to address the issues raised by the critiques …

Four Popular Books On Consumer Debt: A Context For Quantitative Literacy, Andrew J. Miller Jan 2011

Four Popular Books On Consumer Debt: A Context For Quantitative Literacy, Andrew J. Miller

Numeracy

The topics of credit cards, mortgages, subprime lending, and fringe banking are rich sources of problems and discussions for classes focused on quantitative literacy. In this theme book review, we look at four recent books on the consumer debt industry: Credit Card Nation, by Robert Manning; Maxed Out, by James Scurlock; Collateral Damaged, by Charles Geisst; and Broke, USA, by Gary Rivlin. Credit Card Nation takes a scholarly look at the history of credit in America with a focus on the genesis and growth of the credit card industry up to the turn of the 20th century. Maxed Out also …

Do Nba Fans Discriminate Against Race Or Nationality?, Peter Meyer

CMC Senior Theses

Previous work found evidence that the racial composition of NBA teams was positively correlated with the racial composition of their metropolitan market areas during the 1990s. This paper finds continued evidence of this relationship in the 2000s, with an accompanying attendance boost from the incorporation of white players on teams located in whiter areas. There is also evidence that white players receive a salary premium relative to black players of equal performance quality. An examination of player performance indicates that demand for foreign players with the skill set of a forward or center is higher than demand for players of …

Executive Minority Employment And Compensation Gap In The S&P500: Is Compensation Disparity More Prevalent In Certain Industries?, Jason W. Toney Jan 2011

Executive Minority Employment And Compensation Gap In The S&P500: Is Compensation Disparity More Prevalent In Certain Industries?, Jason W. Toney

CMC Senior Theses

Minorities hold a significantly smaller percentage of executive positions in companies within the S&P500. However, whether these minorities are under compensated relative to their non-minority counterparts has not been previously investigated. Using Compustat data, this paper documents the differences in compensation between minorities and non-minorities as a whole, minority and non-minority CEOs, and the differences in compensation for minorities and non-minorities within industries. I show that there is no minority/white wage gap overall, and in some cases, minorities earn a premium compared to non-minorities.

Honors Theses

Case studies of economic development in Japan, Mexico, India, and Kenya examine the relationship between dominant-party regimes and developmental outcomes. This paper studies the variables of bureaucratic coherence and cohesion, corporatism, labor relations, and national developmentism as contributing factors to developmental success or failure in these states.
