Paradigma Ilmiah Pada Ilmu Sosial-Budaya Kontemporer, Akhyar Yusuf

Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya

An American philosopher, Thomas Samuel Kuhn (1922-1996) in his books, The Structure of Scientific Revolution (1962) and The Essential Tension; Selected Studies in Scientific Tradition and Change (1977) poses a paradigm of a universal foundation of science which uses a common fact, method, language and criteria. He does not think that even in the realm of the natural sciences, there are differences, more so that there is a paradigm in the humanities including the arts and literature. Kuhn, however, has established a new paradigm for the philosophy of science which he called “the sociology of science” or a social construction, …

Multilevel Approach For Health Care System Effectiveness Evaluation, Karolina Szymaniec

European Management Studies

Population ageing, medical technology advancement and rising expectations of society in terms of quality and accessibility of health care services provided are just some of the many challenges that health care systems operating today are facing. All these factors are substantial contributors to the assessment of the effectiveness of operations which is carried out by the system stakeholders. The assessment of the system's ability to effectively achieve its goals is one of the key research categories in the analysis of national health care systems. While the very notion of effectiveness and its assessment is not defined clearly in the literature, …

Issues of how firms form collaborative inter-firm alliances, how they nurture the alliance relationships as meaningful ones, and how they evolve and manage collaborations in turbulent market environments deserve increasing research attention. To contribute to filling this void, this study conceptualizes an alliance orientation as a firm`s capabilities to help achieve an advantageous alliance performance to its rivals and based on this concept, demonstrates specific process for a successful alliance performance. First, this study empirically explores the influence of a new construct, alliance orientation, on firms` alliance performance. Second, the concept of alliance creativity as a positional mediation variable between …

Rumors Of Our Rarity Are Greatly Exaggerated: Bad Statistics About Women In Science, Cathy Kessel Jul 2011

Rumors Of Our Rarity Are Greatly Exaggerated: Bad Statistics About Women In Science, Cathy Kessel

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

During the past few years, three bad statistics have been persistently used in discussions of women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The first was questionable when it was published in 1983 and has since been widely used. The second came to prominence in 2006 – and now leads an international and perhaps eternal life on the Web. The third may have made its debut in 2007. Its variants occur in popular and academic books and journals, including the 2011 Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

This report presents case histories of the three bad statistics, suggests writing …

A Multi-Scalar Approach To Theorizing Socio-Ecological Dynamics Of Urban Residential Landscapes, Rinku Roy Chowdhury, Kelli Larson, Morgan Grove, Colin Polsky, Elizabeth Cook, Jeffrey Onsted, Laura Ogden Jul 2011

A Multi-Scalar Approach To Theorizing Socio-Ecological Dynamics Of Urban Residential Landscapes, Rinku Roy Chowdhury, Kelli Larson, Morgan Grove, Colin Polsky, Elizabeth Cook, Jeffrey Onsted, Laura Ogden

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

Urban residential expansion increasingly drives land use, land cover and ecological changes worldwide, yet social science theories explaining such change remain under-developed. Existing theories often focus on processes occurring at one scale, while ignoring other scales. Emerging evidence from four linked U.S. research sites suggests it is essential to examine processes at multiple scales simultaneously when explaining the evolution of urban residential landscapes. Additionally, focusing on urbanization dynamics across multiple sites with a shared research design may yield fruitful comparative insights. The following processes and social-hierarchical scales significantly influence the spatial configurations of residential landscapes: household-level characteristics and environmental attitudes; …

Growing Out Of Adolescence: Conceptions Of Adulthood, Close Relationships, And Health Behaviors Of Emerging Adults With Hiv, Olivia Hsin

Open Access Dissertations

Objective: The current study examined conceptions of adulthood, close personal relationships, and health behaviors (dietary intake, substance use, sexual behaviors) of emerging adults aged 18-30 with horizontally-infected HIV. Emerging adults were expected to differ in levels of achievement of adulthood tasks. The quality of close relationships, and perceptions of close friends’ behaviors were hypothesized to be associated with health behaviors. Method: Utilizing a cross-sectional design, 48 emerging adults with HIV (64.6% female; M age = 22.59, SD = 3.17) from a youth-based clinic serving most of Miami-Dade County were recruited. Participants completed measures on markers of adulthood, close friend and …

Temple Of Ancient Knowing: Music Therapy Portraits Of Globalized Indian Identity, Sangeeta Swamy Jul 2011

Temple Of Ancient Knowing: Music Therapy Portraits Of Globalized Indian Identity, Sangeeta Swamy

Expressive Therapies Dissertations

This dissertation study assessed ethnic identity in adults of Indian origin through Culturally Centered Music & Imagery (CCMI), an arts-based, psychotherapeutic technique. The purpose was to examine how Indian music, in the context of CCMI, could evoke identity-based imagery and assess Indian identity in a globalized context. Five Indian men and women participated in CCMI sessions, and the qualitative methodology of portraiture was used in this study. The results provide support for the cultural or ethnic unconscious and suggest the potential for CCMI to access this internal, collective space. Results also indicate that CCMI may be used in a clinical …

The Impact Of Gender, Verbal Aggressiveness, And Party Identification-Based Bias On Speaker And Message Perception In Political Speeches, Charlotte Nau Jul 2011

The Impact Of Gender, Verbal Aggressiveness, And Party Identification-Based Bias On Speaker And Message Perception In Political Speeches, Charlotte Nau

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

With the number of women in politics growing, the question arises whether they are judged based on the same standards as their male colleagues or if they must adapt to different sets of expectations among the voters. Language Expectancy Theory suggests that women are less effective than men using aggressive persuasion strategies because by being verbally aggressive, they violate social expectations about gender-appropriate conduct and men do not. Three online experiments involving a total of 242 participants were conducted assessing perceptions of speaker credibility, agreement, perceptions of communicative appropriateness, and perceptions of aggressiveness when verbal aggressiveness, gender, and the speaker’s …

The "Precious" Dilemma: An Investigation Of Race, Childhood Sexual Abuse, And Adult Obesity, Armanthia Nicole Duncan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The critically acclaimed film Precious, depicts poverty, sexual abuse, illiteracy, and obesity. The emotional story of Precious inspires this research on childhood sexual trauma and its long-term effects. I intend to address these issues by investigating the relation between childhood sexual abuse and its relation to obesity using data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) and the subcomponent Adverse Childhood Experience module. Using binary logistic regression models controlling for education, income, healthy lifestyle and health risk behaviors, the odds ratio for sexually abused black female respondents were higher than for sexually abused females of other races. Findings from …

Exploring The Relationship Between Myers-Briggs Type And Instructional Perspectives Among College Faculty Across Academic Units, Pamela Jean Moehl

Dissertations

Education has the opportunity to play an integral role in sustaining the health of our economy in an increasingly competitive, global market. A review of the issues and trends impacting higher education reveals growing pressure placed on faculty to advance instructional outcomes among more diverse populations. Imbedded is the challenge to create new knowledge about how to improve instruction. As diversity among college students in terms of age, gender, and ethnicity continues to increase, psychological type provides a means for examining important differences in choice of academic discipline(s), persistence, learning style, and teaching style preferences. Faculty members face increasing pressure …

Lifestyle Entrepreneurs: Insights Into Blackpool’S Small Hotel Sector, William Rowson, Conrad Lashley

Higher Learning Research Communications

Branded chains dominate sections of commercial hospitality provision; however, the vast majority of firms in the sector are micro businesses employing 10 or fewer staff. In fact most are so small as to employ no permanent staff. In many cases, those running these businesses are not classic entrepreneurs driven by a need to maximise profits and build a business empire. Actually, many are best described as lifestyle entrepreneurs, their key motives are more associated improving their quality of life. This paper reports on the owners of a significant sample of Blackpool hotels. For most, this is their first entrepreneurial venture.DOI: …

Total Children Covered By Health Insurance Increased In 2009, Jessica A. Bean, Michael J. Staley

Carsey Publications

This brief uses data collected in 2008 and 2009 from the U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey (ACS) to examine changes in overall insurance coverage rates, as well as changes in types of coverage, and differences by region, state, and place type. The data show that together with new and more inclusive parameters for children's health insurance coverage, rates of children's health insurance have grown during the final year of the recession. Authors Jessica Bean and Michael Staley of the Carsey Institute discuss the complex factors contributing to the shift from private to public health insurance among children. The authors …

Stereotype Threat In Criminal Interrogations: Why Innocent Black Suspects Are At Risk For Confessing Falsely, Cynthia J. Najdowski Jul 2011

Stereotype Threat In Criminal Interrogations: Why Innocent Black Suspects Are At Risk For Confessing Falsely, Cynthia J. Najdowski

Psychology Faculty Scholarship

Little theoretical attention has been paid to evidence that Blacks are overrepresented in samples of false confessors compared to Whites. One possible explanation is that innocent Black suspects experience stereotype threat in interrogations and that this threat causes Black suspects to experience more arousal, self-regulatory efforts, and cognitive load compared to White suspects. These psychological mechanisms could lead innocent Black suspects to display more nonverbal behaviors associated with deception and, ironically, increase the likelihood that police investigators perceive them as guilty. In response, investigators might engage in more coercive tactics and exert more pressure to confess on Black suspects than …

Natural Disasters And Older Adults: The Social Construction Of Disaster Planning, Elizabeth Fugate-Whitlock Jul 2011

Natural Disasters And Older Adults: The Social Construction Of Disaster Planning, Elizabeth Fugate-Whitlock

Theses and Dissertations

Examining older adults’ experiences with and response toward hurricanes within the context of the community of residence is key to both understanding their experiences and planning for future hurricanes. Specific to this research, the objective was to understand the current social network of older adults, or who provides care for whom under what circumstances, using the social constructionist perspective. Grounded theory combined with action research was the theoretical orientation guiding the study. Sources of data included the collection of household disaster plans, semi-structured interviews with older adult residents of housing authority neighborhoods, semi-structured interviews with community planners, and observation of …

Economic Competition, Sustainability, And Survival Endurance: The Extinction Of The Dodo, The Easter Island Case, And The Tragedy Of The Commons Effect, Pedro Moreira

Higher Learning Research Communications

A fast developing industry worldwide, tourism demands a monumental extent of resources, and at times devastates and condemns the very own environments that are fundamental to the economic survival of organizations and the sustainability of travel destinations. The purpose of the study is to link three established scientific themes on survival and sustainability to empirical results in the field of economic decision and behavior. The discussion of this link may also represent the originality value of the paper. Departing from the results of a series of decision games obtained under a quasi-experimental design, behavioral patterns were analyzed and extrapolated to …

Factors To Consider For Optimal Span Of Control In Community Supervision Evidence-Based Practice Environments, Gaylene Armstrong Jul 2011

Factors To Consider For Optimal Span Of Control In Community Supervision Evidence-Based Practice Environments, Gaylene Armstrong

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

In the face of budgetary constraints, legislative discussions in Iowa have focused on fiscal savings through an increased probation/parole supervisor to officer ratio, resulting in a reduced number of supervisory staff. Ramifications of this change, given the concurrent implementation of evidence-based practices (EBP), are unknown, given the lack of existing research on rubric for span of control decisions within community corrections agencies. Interviews with stakeholders in both Iowa and a national convenience sample led to a development of factors that should be considered in the future, including an agency’s level of task complexity, the workforce skill level, and the work …

The Rise Of The European Corporate Elite: Evidence From The Network Of Interlocking Directorates In 2005 And 2010, Eelke M. Heemskerk Jul 2011

The Rise Of The European Corporate Elite: Evidence From The Network Of Interlocking Directorates In 2005 And 2010, Eelke M. Heemskerk

2011

Studies of national networks of interlocking directorates across the globe reveal that since their heydays in the early 1970s, such corporate networks are in decline. During the past decade, there are indications that the cohesion between European corporate boards is actually increasing. However, the financial crisis might have well put a halt to the emerging European corporate network of board interlocks. The return of the nation state in the economic arena in response to the financial and economic crisis might have encouraged European big business to orient themselves towards the national community. Therefore this paper investigates the social organisation of …

Epigenetic Silencing Of Nucleolar Rrna Genes In Alzheimer's Disease, Maciej Pietrzak, Grzegorz Rempala, Peter T. Nelson, Jing-Juan Zheng, Michal Hetman

Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Ribosomal deficits are documented in mild cognitive impairment (MCI), which often represents an early stage Alzheimer's disease (AD), as well as in advanced AD. The nucleolar rRNA genes (rDNA), transcription of which is critical for ribosomal biogenesis, are regulated by epigenetic silencing including promoter CpG methylation.

METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: To assess whether CpG methylation of the rDNA promoter was dysregulated across the AD spectrum, we analyzed brain samples from 10 MCI-, 23 AD-, and, 24 age-matched control individuals using bisulfite mapping. The rDNA promoter became hypermethylated in cerebro-cortical samples from MCI and AD groups. In parietal cortex, the rDNA promoter …

On The Ethical Possibility Of Sustainability: A Challenge For Higher Education, Eric Bain-Selbo Jul 2011

On The Ethical Possibility Of Sustainability: A Challenge For Higher Education, Eric Bain-Selbo

Education for Sustainability Summer Institute

At the heart of the sustainability movement are two questions central to its viability: Are human beings capable of treating the Earth ethically? Are human beings capable of acting morally responsibly for the benefit of distant future generations? Answers to both questions are unclear. This paper draws upon the work of 20th century critical theorists to identify the ethical core of these questions. In the process, the paper will show what would be necessary for us to answer these questions affirmatively. The paper concludes with reflections about how higher education, and interdisciplinary inquiry in particular, can be critical to …
