In Quest Of A Dropout Theory: Examining The Utility Of An Ecological Approach Through Survey Research, Tiffany G. Tyler Aug 2011

In Quest Of A Dropout Theory: Examining The Utility Of An Ecological Approach Through Survey Research, Tiffany G. Tyler

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

This study examined the utility of Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Theory as a metatheory of dropout. Using the NELS: 1988 dataset, the present study examined the relationship between dropout attributions and Bronfenbrenner's construct, the microsystem. Attention was given to accounting for students' attributions regarding their identity (e.g., demographic and profile characteristics) with environmental and regional contexts as possible moderators. In particular, the present study examined the responses given as reasons for dropout in view of how those responses could be categorized with Bronfenbrenner's theoretical structure and the extent to which the resulting categorization could predict dropout, considering related demographic variable.

Risky Curves: From Unobservable Utility To Observable Opportunity Sets, Daniel Friedman, Shyam Sunder Aug 2011

Risky Curves: From Unobservable Utility To Observable Opportunity Sets, Daniel Friedman, Shyam Sunder

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Most theories of risky choice postulate that a decision maker maximizes the expectation of a Bernoulli (or utility or similar) function. We tour 60 years of empirical search and conclude that no such functions have yet been found that are useful for out-of-sample prediction. Nor do we find practical applications of Bernoulli functions in major risk-based industries such as finance, insurance and gambling. We sketch an alternative approach to modeling risky choice that focuses on potentially observable opportunities rather than on unobservable Bernoulli functions.

The Evaluation Of The Use Of A Paper Tracking Form To Improve Provider Adherence To Lipid Guidelines, Diane Ladd Aug 2011

The Evaluation Of The Use Of A Paper Tracking Form To Improve Provider Adherence To Lipid Guidelines, Diane Ladd

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in men and women in the United States. Significant research into the risk factors for cardiovascular disease has been done, and the effect of hyperlipidemia on cardiovascular risk has been well documented. Recent research has shown that there is a lack of adherence to lipid guidelines by primary care providers. Failure to follow clinical guidelines for lipid disorders leads to increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. The objective of the project was to evaluate whether a simple, paper-based, lipid tracking form could improve provider adherence to current lipid guidelines. This descriptive study used …

Ncaa Division I Football Bowl Subdivision: The Importance Of Recruiting And Its Relationship With Team Performance, Nathan S. Lloyd

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Talent wins college football games. Wins bring in money. Colleges, fans and media hype up the recruiting season as the key to success in the college football season. Is it though? Athletic programs spend large sums of capital and resources to recruit the most talented players possible. This paper explores the relationship between recruited talent and team performance using a simultaneous equations model. Higher players’ talent leads to better team performance and a recruiting class has its biggest impact immediately following signing. A team’s performance, especially of the most recent season, impacts its ability to recruit. Talent and success experience …

Examining The Knowledge Sharing And Uncivil Behavior Of Envious Employees: An Affective Events Theory Perspective, Ankur P. Nandedkar Aug 2011

Examining The Knowledge Sharing And Uncivil Behavior Of Envious Employees: An Affective Events Theory Perspective, Ankur P. Nandedkar

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Envy is deep-rooted within human nature and considered as a socially undesirable emotion. According to social science scholars, competitive situations are breeding grounds for various feelings of ill-will. Researchers have demonstrated that an organization's systems and structure permit envy to exist and thrive even in the workplace. Within a workplace setting, various job-related scenarios such as positions held, promotions, projects assigned, job design, pay increases, and performance recognition can lead to envious feelings, which in turn, can have negative consequences. There are some organizations in which employees engage in close interactions on a regular basis and share a high degree …

Chemical Education Experiences From The English Language Learner Perspective, Annette Flores Aug 2011

Chemical Education Experiences From The English Language Learner Perspective, Annette Flores

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The Rio Grande Valley (RGV) is a region populated by Spanish-speaking immigrants and their descendants producing a large English Language Learner (ELL) student population. ELLs have historically had low literacy rates and achievement levels when compared to their counterparts. In order to address this achievement gap, previous research efforts and curriculum interventions have focused on language acquisition as being the determining factor in ELL education, with little attention given to academic content acquisition. More current research efforts have transitioned into English language acquisition through academic content instruction; this present research study specifically focuses on ELL experiences in chemistry. Participants were …

Retrograde Movements And The Educational Encounter : Working-Class Adults In First-Year Composition., James Eric Romesburg Aug 2011

Retrograde Movements And The Educational Encounter : Working-Class Adults In First-Year Composition., James Eric Romesburg

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores the role first-year composition (FYC) courses play in the academic lives of working-class adult students in the University of Louisville, an institution that, during portions of its long history, has been a valuable educational resource for working adults in the Louisville area. A confluence of political and administrative pressures from both within and outside the institution have been working to shift U of L's focus away from being an access-oriented metropolitan university and toward the standard research university model, which has meant raising minimum standardized test scores, increasing tuition on an annual basis, and reducing the number …

Factors Predicting Exercise Behavior Of Graduate Students, Bibha Gautam Aug 2011

Factors Predicting Exercise Behavior Of Graduate Students, Bibha Gautam

Theses and Dissertations

Graduate school is often experienced as a time of increased demands/expectations resulting in heightened levels of stress due to academic work, family responsibilities, job demands, financial pressure, and other life related issues. Besides stress, graduate school also brings about significant physical inactivity due to the shift of the immediate priority to academic accomplishment. Reports of increasing prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors among students highlight that this group may have particular risk not well-identified. Yet, relative risk can be reduced by lifestyle modifications, such as eating well, exercising, and stress reduction. The majority of the risk factors, to a …

Identifying Predictors Of Social Functioning In College Students : A Meta-Analysis., Jennifer Blair Beard Aug 2011

Identifying Predictors Of Social Functioning In College Students : A Meta-Analysis., Jennifer Blair Beard

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This meta-analysis draws studies from the literature on college student persistence, need theories, and positive psychology in investigating the strongest predictors of social functioning in college students in the United States and Canada. The predictor categories included background characteristics, measures of personality, mental health symptomology, coping style, and academic predictors. The results indicated that an individual's level of extraversion (a personality predictor), level of institutional commitment (an academic predictor), and levels of anxiety and depression (mental health predictors) are the strongest predictors of social functioning in college. The moderator analyses revealed that these effects are even stronger in public institutions …

The Use Of Online Social Networking By Rural Youth And Its Effects On Community Attachment, Han Ei Chew, Robert Larose, Charles Steinfield, Alcides Velasquez

Research Collection Office of Impact

In recent years, an increasing amount of attention has been placed on improving access to Information and Communication Technology in the United States. With the rapidity at which broadband construction projects are dotting America, it is important to understand the social impacts of these infrastructural projects. One particularly salient issue is whether access to the Internet would decrease the involvement of youth in their home communities since youth and issues of talent retention are crucial to the long-term viability of rural communities. However, findings on this topic have been a mixed bag with some studies suggesting that the use of …

Getting To Know The Economy In Your Community: Automated Social Accounting, Abelardo Rodriguez, Willem J. Braak, Philip Watson

Journal of Extension

In response to the demand for economic base assessments in different counties and small regions, an automated social accounting matrix (ASAM) was developed through a fruitful collaboration between graduate students and Extension faculty. ASAM uses direct or customized secondary information from IMPLAN to estimate the economic contributions of different sectors and their economic multipliers. Tabular and graphic results can be rapidly customized for discussions in communities of practice. ASAM is a tool that can foster teachable moments.

Engaging Readers, Engaging Texts: An Exploration Of How Librarians Can Use Reader Response Theory To Better Serve Our Patrons, Stephanie M. Mathson Aug 2011

Engaging Readers, Engaging Texts: An Exploration Of How Librarians Can Use Reader Response Theory To Better Serve Our Patrons, Stephanie M. Mathson

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Literary theorist Wolfgang Iser describes reading as a creative process in and of itself, which adds layers of meaning and understanding to a text. However, little attention is paid to this theory in most Library and Information Science Programs. Because librarians understand the relationships that can exist between readers and books and how strongly books can impact readers’ lives, we should have a deeper understand of what reader response (or reception) theory is. There are a number of ways that we can apply reader response theory to the work we do, including providing readers’ advisory services, developing collections, reviewing books …

Rethinking The Rural-Urban Divide In China’S New Stratification Order, Qian Forrest Zhang Aug 2011

Rethinking The Rural-Urban Divide In China’S New Stratification Order, Qian Forrest Zhang

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

I use a Marxist framework centred on the mode of production to conceptually analyze the changing stratification structure in today’s China with a focus on the changing nature of rural-urban inequality. As the state-managed tributary mode of production, once dominant under socialism, is being gradually eclipsed by the reviving petty-commodity mode of production and the newly emerged capitalist mode of production, both of which are market-based and enable the transfer of surplus from labour to capital, a new set of mechanisms are creating and sustaining rural-urban inequality in China. Rural-urban inequality – although still significant in its magnitude – is …

Youth In Revolt. How Suburban Youth Of The 1950s Rejected The Contradictions Of An Affluent Society In Favor Of Apocalyptic Zombies And Chicken Runs, Michele Leigh Goostree

Theses

The purpose of this study is two-fold. First, I will examine the influences shaping the choices of teenagers living in an affluent society during the early days of the Cold War, specifically 1950 - 1955. I will discuss the contradictions about society, the family unit, and gender roles teenagers attempted to sort out as they moved through adolescence. Secondly, I will focus on two forms of mass media, specifically comic books and movies of the 1950s. Media has always had the power to change and shape the opinion of the youth culture who consumed it. I will discuss the lengths …

Alleviating Equines: Investigating The Hypothesized Mechanisms Of Change In Equine Assisted Psychotherapy, Kathy L. Korell-Rach Aug 2011

Alleviating Equines: Investigating The Hypothesized Mechanisms Of Change In Equine Assisted Psychotherapy, Kathy L. Korell-Rach

Theses and Dissertations

Animal Assisted Therapy research was integrated to develop the Tri-Level Mechanisms of Change (TLMC) Conceptualization, which is a comprehensive theoretical framework hypothesizing how Equine Assisted Psychotherapy produces psychological change. TLMC hypothesizes that the strength of human animal bond (HAB) with personal pets accounts for the development of HAB with therapy horses (primary level). The quality of HAB with therapy horses is responsible for producing changes in general psychological constructs (secondary level). Adaptive changes in secondary level constructs account for reductions in mental illness symptoms (tertiary level). Results indicated a significant reduction in tertiary level symptoms, and gains were maintained at …

History Of Childhood Sexual Abuse In Mexican Origin Undergraduate Students And Its Relationship To Impulsivity, Jessica Lee Graham

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

It is estimated that twenty-five percent of undergraduate female students have experienced some form of sexual abuse while under the age of 18. The definition of childhood sexual abuse, CSA, consists of abusive behaviors of varying intensity and duration and varies across states. Few studies have been done addressing the relationship between CSA and impulsivity. The purpose of this study was to determine if there was an association between a history of childhood sexual abuse and impulsivity in adults of Mexican origin. One hundred fifty-one undergraduates from UTPA participated. For the purposes of this study focus was placed on the …

Binge Drinking In Undergraduate Mexican-Origin Students And Its' Relation To Impulsivity, Rosalva M. Longoria Aug 2011

Binge Drinking In Undergraduate Mexican-Origin Students And Its' Relation To Impulsivity, Rosalva M. Longoria

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Heavy drinking is more prevalent in college students ages 18 through 21 than non-students (NIAAA, 2010). Impulsivity and binge drinking have shown an association (Balodis, Potenza & Olmstead, 2009). An important aspect of this relationship is the influencing factors that may help in determining the effects of drinking on academic performance. In order to predict this behavior, we collected information on tendencies to be impulsive and those that have shown binge drinking behavior from 151 undergraduate students, 11 non-Hispanics, 3 Hispanics, and 137 Hispanics of Mexican-origin attending the University of Texas-Pan American. Of the Mexican-origin students, 37% reported binge drinking …

Consumer Experience Intensity: Towards A Conceptualization And Measurement, Ebru Ulusoy Akgun Aug 2011

Consumer Experience Intensity: Towards A Conceptualization And Measurement, Ebru Ulusoy Akgun

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Experience has been accepted as a separate market offering that is increasingly being utilized by various businesses. Consequently, there is a growing need to understand the phenomenon of commercial experiences, their role in various market contexts, and the reasons of consumers’ interest in them. It is also crucial to understand the ways the consumers derive value from marketplace experiences. Yet, it would be misleading to assume that all experiences have the same significance for consumers, and consumers derive high level of value from every experience in the market. This dissertation aims to understand the experiences that consumers find to be …

Pedagogical Practices: Nurturing And Maintaining Democratic Habits, Lucretia Marie Hubler-Larimore Aug 2011

Pedagogical Practices: Nurturing And Maintaining Democratic Habits, Lucretia Marie Hubler-Larimore

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This case study examined the pedagogical practices of four teachers of one public elementary school whose mission seeks to nurture and maintain democratic habits for participation in a democratic society. Historically, public schools have been charged with the duty of preparing young minds to live within in a democratic society and as such this argument has been cited as one of the fundamental reasons for providing public financial support of schools. The exploration of how pedagogical choices and curriculum development were used to create opportunities for experiencing democracy was considered within the specific social contexts of the school. Contexts considered …

Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi

Migration in Samarinda has always had an important role in longterm changes within social processes; corresponding to historical and political trends rather than just to short-term economic calculation. In Indonesia, migration was seen as a crucial survival strategy. Migration has been a crucial factor contributing to economic growth and poverty reduction either in the origin and the destination. Moreover, it has been known that within Samarinda, peasants tend to keep social ties with the place of their origin using circular migration as a transitional step to explore opportunities in urban settings and to expand livelihood security during the transitional periods …

In this case, she, herself, becomes a doer which is controlling her own body. The dynamic of woman’s authority of her body is influenced by a certain setting and context. It …
