Sanctioning Policies-Australian, American And British Cross-National Reflections And Comparisons, Harry Savelsberg Sep 2011

Sanctioning Policies-Australian, American And British Cross-National Reflections And Comparisons, Harry Savelsberg

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Over the last two decades welfare policies have undergone major reforms in Anglo-Western nations such as the U.S., U.K. and Australia. Central to these reforms have been the revision of welfare recipient entitlements and responsibilities and the emergence of a responsibility and obligations agenda. The essence of this agenda is conditionality and reciprocity, and it includes the threat of punitive sanctions for failing to comply with mandatory participation requirements. This paper highlights the potent influence of the ideas of American conservatives on policy reforms in the U.S., the U.K. and Australia and provides a thematic crossnational comparison of sanctioning policies …

Likelihood Of Asking For Help In Caregivers Of Women With Substance Use Or Co-Occurring Substance Use And Mental Disorders, Suzanne Brown, David E. Biegel, Elizabeth M. Tracy

Social Work Faculty Publications

Family members are important to the well-being of their relatives with substance use disorders or cooccurring substance use and mental disorders. Many caregivers experience high levels of burden, negatively impacting their capacity to provide support to their ill family member. The Andersen health care utilization model (Andersen & Newman, 1973, 2005) was used to identify the impact of predisposing, enabling, and need factors hypothesized to predict caregivers’ likelihood of asking for help and support with their caregiving role. The sample include 82 women recruited from outpatient or inpatient substance abuse treatment centers and 82 family caregivers nominated by these women. …

An online survey was designed and administrated on the website SurveyMonkey.com asking questions about the following issues: 1) Do Veterans think that Lesbians, Gays and Bisexuals (LGB) Veterans are willing to disclose their sexual orientation under DADT and after the repeal? 2) Do Veterans think that a LGB Veterans military branch and occupation will have an impact …

The Turkish Wage Curve; Evidence From The Household Labor Force Survey, Badi H. Baltagi, Yusuf Soner Baskaya, Timur Hulagu Sep 2011

The Turkish Wage Curve; Evidence From The Household Labor Force Survey, Badi H. Baltagi, Yusuf Soner Baskaya, Timur Hulagu

Center for Policy Research

This paper examines the Turkish wage curve using individual data from the Household Labor Force Survey (HLFS) including 26 NUTS-2 regions over the period 2005 - 2008. When the local unemployment rate is treated as predetermined, there is evidence in favor of the wage curve only for younger and female workers. However, if the lagged unemployment rate is used as an instrument for current unemployment rate, we find an unemployment elasticity of -0.099. We also find a higher elasticity for younger, less educated, low experienced workers than for older, more educated and more experienced workers. Another important finding is that …

Child Support As Labor Regulation, Yiyoon Chung Sep 2011

Child Support As Labor Regulation, Yiyoon Chung

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The development of child support policy over the past three decades provides an emblematic case study of the ways in which a new policy that reflects the rise of moral arguments about individual and family responsibility, once established, produces significant consequences for both the economic sphere and political dialogues. I use social control theory to examine a rarely appreciated consequence of child support policies: labor regulation. Particularly, I demonstrate the ways in which the discourse embedded in child support has exalted the importance of work even under the lowest terms, and has deflected public attention away from labor market issues.

The Content And Development Of Chinese Nursing Textbooks In Taiwan: A Bio-Psychosocial Perspective Of End-Of-Life Care, Hsiao-Ling Yang, Chia-Yi Wu, Mei Chang, Quan-Wei Chang, Wen-Yu Hu

Journal of Medical Education

Palliative care models have been developed and put into practice in Taiwan for more than 20 years. However, the progress of comprehensive training programs is still in its early stages, and most nursing training modules are lacking in related courses. Thus, it is critical to examine the appropriateness and integrity of the contents in the teaching materials relating to end-of-life care (EC) on which training for students and registered nurses is based. The purpose of this study is to review the contents and distribution of published Chinese nursing textbooks in Taiwan during 1945-2009, and the percentage of contents devoted to …

Men In Public Relations: Saving An Endangered Species, Nancy Long Sep 2011

Men In Public Relations: Saving An Endangered Species, Nancy Long

Theses and Dissertations

It has been 25 years since the publication of The Velvet Ghetto, the seminal work on gender in public relations. Looking ahead, the study forecast a field that was "ghettoized" as the workforce became increasingly female. Has that been the case? Since the mid-eighties, women have solidified their hold at nearly all levels in the public relations industry. While the advancement of women is to be applauded, is this imbalance a good thing? The industry, to date, has ignored this trend. What strategies should be employed to make the field more diverse and balanced from a gender perspective? Now that …

"When Joanie Comes Marchin' Home" : An Exploratory Study Of Community-Based Mental Health Services For Lesbian Military Families, Dianne Marie Terp Sep 2011

"When Joanie Comes Marchin' Home" : An Exploratory Study Of Community-Based Mental Health Services For Lesbian Military Families, Dianne Marie Terp

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

The U.S. military invests significant resources into support for servicemembers and their families. Due in part to the federal policies known as "Don't ask, don't tell" (DADT) and The Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), the military does not provide this support to lesbian military families. This study researched the potential of lesbian-focused community mental health centers as viable alternative providers for these servicemembers. The findings of the study showed that the best prepared lesbian-focused mental health centers can provide only 73% of the resources which the military states are needed. The average center had access to only 40% of the …

Climate Change And Social Work : Steps To An Eco-Social Work Practice, Abigail Ellen Tischler Sep 2011

Climate Change And Social Work : Steps To An Eco-Social Work Practice, Abigail Ellen Tischler

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

Although many professions and citizen groups are actively working to create practice models and policies that will help people adapt to climate change, the social work profession is not currently engaging with this issue. If the social work profession would join these other groups and create its own practice models based on meeting the physical, psychological, and social needs that result from climate change, then the core social work value of creating a just society and empowering underrepresented populations can be strengthened in climate change adaptation work. This qualitative, exploratory study asked eleven social workers what concerns they have for …

When Therapists Attack : An Aggressive Instinct In The Countertransference And Aggressive Behavior In Technique, Lauren Durbin Walther

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This is a theoretical thesis focused on aggression in countertransference for the purpose of increasing clinicians' awareness and understanding of aggressive feelings and actions towards patients. Firstly, this research examines the evolution of theories about countertransference in psychoanalytic literature with attention to the experience of hate and aggression. Secondly, this research presents contemporary understandings of the behavioral features of aggression and considers a methodic examination of the behavioral manifestations of aggression in countertransference. Acting out one's aggressive instincts towards a client is potentially damaging to the therapeutic relationship. A classification system of aggressive behavior is outlined and applied to therapists' …

Stress And Status : How Socioeconomic Status Affects Stress In Young Adult Women, Emma Katharine Yovanoff

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

Numerous studies highlight the connection between women with low socioeconomic status (SES) and stress; however, there is a gap in the literature in regards to women with high SES status or what these two groups may have in common. The present study used a mixed methods approach to examine how types and levels of stress differ between women ages 18-24 years who have lower and higher socioeconomic status. Participants were 106 women with either low or high SES between the ages of 18-24 years. Data were collected using an anonymous online survey to determine each participant's SES and to identify …

Health Worker Experiences With Environmental Pollution : Health In Urban Targeted Community : A Study Of Pollution And Clinicians' Experiences And Attitudes Towards It In Urban Low-Income Communities And Communities Of Color, Leslie B. Bosworth

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

Research suggests that exposure to pollution can impact people's health, and that there are more chances for exposure in some urban low-income communities or communities of color. The purpose of the study is to explore whether social service oriented clinicians consider whether their clients are exposed to pollution, how large of a problem the believe pollution is for their clients, and what actions they and their clients have taken to protect against pollution. A second purpose is to assess whether clinicians view pollution as product of discrimination. A third purpose is to see if pollution is indeed higher in lower-income …
