We report the detection of three new exoplanets from Keck Observatory. HD 163607 is a metal-rich G5IV star with two planets. The inner planet has an observed orbital period of 75.29 ± 0.02 days, a semi-amplitude of 51.1 ± 1.4 m s−1, an eccentricity of 0.73 ± 0.02, and a derived minimum mass of MPsin i = 0.77 ± 0.02 MJup. This is the largest eccentricity of any known planet in a multi-planet system. The argument of periastron passage is 78.7 ± 2fdg0; consequently, the planet's closest approach to its parent star is very near the line of sight, leading …

Telling It Like It Is: A Proposal To Improve Transparency In Biomedical Research, John Hadley
Telling It Like It Is: A Proposal To Improve Transparency In Biomedical Research, John Hadley
Between the Species
Recent proposals to improve public communication about animal-based biomedical research have been narrowly focused on reforming biomedical journal submission guidelines. My suggestion for communication reform is broader in scope reaching beyond the research community to healthcare communicators and ultimately the general public. The suggestion is for researchers to provide journalists and public relations practitioners with concise summaries of their ‘animal use data’. Animal use data is collected by researchers and intended for the public record but is rarely, if ever, given significant media exposure. By providing healthcare communicators with specific details about their animal use, researchers can play a role …

The Anchor, Volume 125.11: December 7, 2011, Hope College
The Anchor: 2011
The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Mormons And Muslims: Living In An Intolerant World, Matt Bagley
Mormons And Muslims: Living In An Intolerant World, Matt Bagley
Arrington Student Writing Award Winners
September 11. Osama Bin Laden. Suicide bombers. Taliban. Terrorism. Cult. Allah. Muslim. These are just a few of the many words that instinctively slip to the tip of the tongue as the average American is asked to verbalize his or her thoughts on the Middle East. Not only are these some of the first words and images that come to mind, they are oftentimes the only words and images that one might have in regards to this group of people.
Cult. Joseph Smith. The Book of Mormon. Polygamy. Gold bible. These are some of the words that come to mind …
Egypt And Mormonism: Oriental Traits Of The Latter-Day Saints, Alexander Fronk
Egypt And Mormonism: Oriental Traits Of The Latter-Day Saints, Alexander Fronk
Arrington Student Writing Award Winners
In his lecture, Dr. Francaviglia presents a fascinating framework in which to understand American history and culture, as well as Mormons specifically. Orientalism was defined for the lecture as the assimilation or imitation of that which is oriental in religious or philosophical thought, or in art. Through various mediums, including architectural examples, quotes from Mormons and their detractors, and travel literature, Dr. Francaviglia demonstrates that not only Mormons were compared to Oriental peoples and assigned Oriental traits, but they also actively attributed such traits to themselves; they assumed an Oriental identity. By understanding how Mormons were Orientalized by others and …

Facilitating The Staff Nurse's Role In Creating A Culture Of Care On An Obstetrical Care Unit, Laura Struve Hanson
Facilitating The Staff Nurse's Role In Creating A Culture Of Care On An Obstetrical Care Unit, Laura Struve Hanson
Theses and Graduate Projects
The art of caring is foundational to the nursing profession, but too often nurses prioritize care for others above care for themselves. Nurse self-care and peer care are integral in the creation of a unit culture of care. This project introduces a new nursing practice model based on Jean Watson's caring theory and Caritas Processes to guide staff nurses on an obstetrical unit in creating a culture of care for self and peers. The practice model relies on nurse courage, intentional collaboration, and creativity to uniquely integrate the Caritas Processes into professional practice. This progression fosters the emergence of holistic …
Introducing Integrative Medicine At The Bedside To Patients With Post-Traumatic Headache Pain, Melissa E. Allard
Introducing Integrative Medicine At The Bedside To Patients With Post-Traumatic Headache Pain, Melissa E. Allard
Theses and Graduate Projects
The use of integrative medicine is growing, and the nursing profession has a responsibility to meet the changing needs of patients. This paper describes a model of nursing for delivering integrative medicine practices at the bedside to persons suffering with post-traumatic headache pain related to traumatic brain injury (TBI) and is grounded in Katherine Kolcaba's Comfort Theory. A patient is best served when the holistic principles of integrative medicine are facilitated by a nurse who is centered and able to introduce these modalities with positive intention. The goal of the practice model is to provide the foundation for nursing to …
Advancing A Culture Of Safety Through The Creation Of A Unit-Based Safety Team, Lynda K. Carr
Advancing A Culture Of Safety Through The Creation Of A Unit-Based Safety Team, Lynda K. Carr
Theses and Graduate Projects
Hospitals are challenged to create a strong culture of safety within their organization to eliminate harm to patients. This paper describes a project to advance a culture of safety on a cardiovascular acute care unit at an urban hospital through the creation of a unit-based safety team. Based on the premise that patient safety is a local phenomenon, the rationale for the project is to aim interventions at the unit level where they will have the greatest impact. Four key steps in creating an effective unit-based safety team are highlighted: team member selection, team development, enacting interventions, and evaluating interventions …
Claims And Enthymemes: The Rudiments Of Argument, Adam Kotlarczyk
Claims And Enthymemes: The Rudiments Of Argument, Adam Kotlarczyk
Writing Bootcamp Unit
In Rhetoric, Aristotle called the enthymeme the syllogism of persuasion. More recently, philosopher Stephen Toulmin used a similar structure to form “practical arguments” in his Model of Argument in The Uses of Argument (1958). Essentially, such an argument consists of three components: claim, evidence, warrant. The claim is an arguable conclusion, for example “Edward Hopper is a famous painter.” The evidence provides a reason to support this claim, for example “because his work is at the Art Institute in Chicago.” The warrant is an assumption inherent in an argument, usually unstated, in this case, that famous artists have work …
