Involuntary Psychiatric Hospitalization And Risk Management: The Ethical Considerations, Richard C. Christensen, Md, Ma Dec 2011

Involuntary Psychiatric Hospitalization And Risk Management: The Ethical Considerations, Richard C. Christensen, Md, Ma

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

During an era where physicians go to great lengths to limit personal risk and ensure self-protection from lawsuits, psychiatrists may be inclined to err on the side of involuntarily hospitalizing patients who have been briefly evaluated in the emergency room or clinic setting. However, conscientious treatment decisions, particularly those pertaining to involuntary psychiatric hospitalization, need to address at least two fundamental ethical concerns: the patient's best interests and the clinician's motives. This article discusses the moral components involved in clinical decision making and presents a case example which highlights the ethical implications of involuntary psychiatric hospitalizations.

Faculty Advisor's Column, Harvey J. Schwartz, Md

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

It has been a pleasure and a privilege to have been the Faculty Advisor for the Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry for the past 10 years. We began this resident written and edited journal in 1983 as a small in-house publication designed to encourage our residents to put their thoughts about patient care into written form. Since then we have grown considerably and now serve as the only national resident journal in medicine. Many people over the years have made this effort possible. I would like to pay special thanks to our generous and supportive sponsors and …

Editor's Column, Mary E. Donovan, Md

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

In this edition of The Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry we say good-bye to Harvey J. Schwartz, M.D., who founded it as a resident education project ten years ago and who has been our Faculty Advisor ever since. Under Dr. Schwartz's mentorship the Journal has grown from a departmental vehicle for residents' writings to a national publication in which residents can be proud to have their work presented. Having become a nation-wide resident education project, sponsored in part by the APA, the Journal serves to meet a need for all psychiatry residents: to learn about writing, editing and publishing.

Returns To The Introduction Of New Sorghum Cultivars Into The Dairy Industry Of El Salvador, Alexis H. Villacís, John H. Sanders Dec 2011

Returns To The Introduction Of New Sorghum Cultivars Into The Dairy Industry Of El Salvador, Alexis H. Villacís, John H. Sanders

INTSORMIL Presentations

The driver of agricultural development is the introduction of new technology. Sensitive sorghums have long been a critical component of hillside Central American agriculture providing a reserve or insurance policy when the principal staple of maize falters. The insensitive sorghums have been more recently introduced since the ‘70s for planting in the valleys in the second season. In the last thirty years the introduction of new insensitive cultivars has accelerated initially for poultry and in the previous two decades for dairy production. This growth has been facilitated by strategic investments in research by CENTA and the Ministry of Agriculture.

Designing A Centralized Training Academy For Maritime Security, Angelica Sogor Dec 2011

Designing A Centralized Training Academy For Maritime Security, Angelica Sogor

Open Access Theses

The maritime industry is an economic activity that enables global trade and travel. However, the transportation network is threatened by security risks that seek to exploit vulnerabilities and cause damage to ships, interrupt the global supply chain network, and endanger the lives of crewmembers and passengers. While policies exist to aid in the prevention of attacks, these policies, alone, are insufficient to sustain global maritime domain security and awareness. Policies must be effectively enforced and complemented with highly trained crewmembers who have the knowledge and skills to efficiently prevent, detect, and respond to threats. This study analyzed maritime security policies …

Inactivity, Inflammation, And Insulin Resistance In Type 2 Diabetes And The Metabolic Syndrome, Ashley E. Moncrieft Dec 2011

Inactivity, Inflammation, And Insulin Resistance In Type 2 Diabetes And The Metabolic Syndrome, Ashley E. Moncrieft

Open Access Theses

Both type 2 diabetes (T2D) and the the metabolic syndrome (MetS) have been shown to increase the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Inflammation and insulin resistance have each been associated with the development of MetS and the onset of T2D as well as the risk of CVD. Inflammation and insulin resistance are therefore suitable targets for public health initiatives and interventions in persons at risk for or living with CVD. Physical inactivity is a major risk factor for CVD as well as MetS and T2D. Conversely, increased physical activity is associated with improved health outcomes for individuals with a high …

Sources Of Information And Hiv/Aids In Minority Communities Of Broward County, Elizabeth Sanchez Brana Dec 2011

Sources Of Information And Hiv/Aids In Minority Communities Of Broward County, Elizabeth Sanchez Brana

Open Access Dissertations

In 2008 it was estimated that in Broward County approximately 1 in 130 was living with HIV/AIDS. Broken down by race, it was 1 in 216 Whites, 1 in 50 Blacks and 1 in 198 Hispanics. Broward County had the second highest case rate of all the counties in the state of Florida. HIV/AIDS prevention remains a critical challenge and high impact prevention strategies are needed consistently to reach the most people using limited time, effort and funds. There has been little evidence to demonstrate the relationship between sources of information, specifically media channels, and risk perception and risk behaviors. …

Examining The Efficacy Of Hiv Risk-Reduction Counseling On The Sexual Risk Behaviors Of A National Sample Of Drug Abuse Treatment Clients: Analysis Of Subgroups, Lauren K. Gooden Dec 2011

Examining The Efficacy Of Hiv Risk-Reduction Counseling On The Sexual Risk Behaviors Of A National Sample Of Drug Abuse Treatment Clients: Analysis Of Subgroups, Lauren K. Gooden

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation sought to evaluate the efficacy of brief, HIV risk-reduction counseling (versus information only) among subgroups of substance abuse treatment clients by conducting a series of post-hoc analyses of data that were collected from the CTN 0032 trial. It was hypothesized that HIV risk-reduction counseling would be associated with decreased sexual risk behaviors in several subgroups as determined by baseline characteristics. Findings of this dissertation suggest that brief, HIV risk-reduction counseling delivered in conjunction with rapid HIV testing is not efficacious in reducing number of risky sex acts among subgroups of substance abuse treatment clients. Findings suggest that brief, …
