Design Of Multi Agent Based Crowd Injury Model, Emin Kugu Jan 2011

Design Of Multi Agent Based Crowd Injury Model, Emin Kugu

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A major concern of many government agencies is to predict and control the behavior of crowds in different situations. Many times such gatherings are legal, legitimate, and peaceful. But there are times when they can turn violent, run out of control, result in material damages and even casualties. It then becomes the duty of governments to bring them under control using a variety of techniques, including non-lethal and lethal weapons, if necessary.

In order to aid decision makers on the course of action in crowd control, there are modeling and simulation tools that can provide guidelines by giving programmed rules …

Now Accepting Applications Online: An Examination Of Privacy Concerns, Explanations, And Control In Applicant Reactions To Internet-Based Selection Procedures, Clayton Alan Yonce Jan 2011

Now Accepting Applications Online: An Examination Of Privacy Concerns, Explanations, And Control In Applicant Reactions To Internet-Based Selection Procedures, Clayton Alan Yonce

Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation explores applicant reactions to Internet-based selection procedures in order to advance theory and practice related to the use modern employee selection tools. Previous authors have explored this topic area (e.g., Harris et al., 2003). However, this dissertation goes beyond previous research by proposing and testing a model that incorporates the measurement of multiple constructs that are highly relevant to organizations when utilizing Internet-based selection procedures. Such constructs include privacy concerns, explanations, control, fairness perceptions, litigation intentions, organizational intentions, and test-taking motivation. Current organizational justice theory, previous findings from studies on applicant reactions to selection procedures, and research on …

Effects Of Daily Social Support On Tension-Reduction Drinking, Deborah L. Brannan Jan 2011

Effects Of Daily Social Support On Tension-Reduction Drinking, Deborah L. Brannan

Dissertations and Theses

Researchers have argued that in times of need having supportive, caring people available can make all the difference between achieving optimum health and well-being or suffering from mental or physical illness (Cobb, 1976; Sarason & Sarason, 1985; Thoits, 1986). The direct-effect model of support postulates that having the knowledge of available relationship resources (i.e., perceived support) and receiving benefits from those relationships (i.e., received support) both have beneficial effects on health behaviors and well-being (Cohen & Wills, 1985). According to the stress-buffering model, when stressors are encountered, the certainty of having available resources, as well as having tangible support resources, …

Ingredients Of Civic Engagement In Intercultural Communication Education, Satoshi Toyosaki, Ana Cruz, Mariko Izumi, Naomi Kagawa, Mary Anna Kidd Jan 2011

Ingredients Of Civic Engagement In Intercultural Communication Education, Satoshi Toyosaki, Ana Cruz, Mariko Izumi, Naomi Kagawa, Mary Anna Kidd

Iowa Journal of Communication

This essay seeks to theorize the relationship between civic engagement and intercultural communication education. In order to articulate the notion of civic engagement, it engages in the discussion of civic engagement and intercultural communication education from multiple perspectives such as social scientific approaches, critical/cultural studies and rhetorical studies. In order to embody the notion of dialogue and co-constructive nature of knowledge at the heart of critical/intercultural communication education, this essay takes a dialogic format through which the notion of civic engagement and its role in intercultural communication education are negotiated, refined and articulated as constructs. By engaging with literature from …

Assessment For Improvement In Higher Education: Faculty Perception Of And Participation In Program Assessment, Serap Emil Jan 2011

Assessment For Improvement In Higher Education: Faculty Perception Of And Participation In Program Assessment, Serap Emil

Dissertations and Theses

Driven by issues of accountability, the assessment movement in higher education has gained significant momentum in recent years. However, successful implementation of assessment processes varies radically across institutions and organizational units. A key issue is faculty engagement. This qualitative case study explored factors that impact faculty participation in a professional school assessment initiative. Findings indicate that factors related to individual faculty characteristics (e.g., career preparation, knowledge, beliefs, and attitudes) and institutional characteristics (e.g., leadership, resources, reward structures, work environment, and technology) influence faculty members engagement in assessment activities. To support faculty adoption of and participation in assessment efforts, leaders need …

"Outing" Queer Issues In Teacher Preparation Programs: How Pre-Service Teachers Experience Sexual And Gender Diversity In Their Field Placements, Olivia Jo Murray Jan 2011

"Outing" Queer Issues In Teacher Preparation Programs: How Pre-Service Teachers Experience Sexual And Gender Diversity In Their Field Placements, Olivia Jo Murray

Dissertations and Theses

Currently in the United States there are more than 4 million lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) students in K-12 public schools (Bochenek, Brown, & Human Rights Watch, 2001). Despite the prevalence of LGBT youth and the diversification of family populations, teacher preparation programs rarely acknowledge "queer" aspects of multiculturalism (Letts, 2002). As a result, a majority of K-12 educators enter the field of teaching unwilling and/or unprepared to engage with queer issues as they relate to students and families, curriculum, and instruction. The culture of silence around homosexuality can put queer youth at risk and deter school stakeholders from …

Torture In The Eyes Of The Beholder, Mary-Hunter M. Mcdonnell, Loran F. Nordgren, George Loewenstein Jan 2011

Torture In The Eyes Of The Beholder, Mary-Hunter M. Mcdonnell, Loran F. Nordgren, George Loewenstein

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

This Article draws upon recent social psychological research to demonstrate the psychological difficulty of distinguishing between torture and enhanced interrogation. We critique the accuracy of evaluations made under the current torture standard using two constructs--reliability and validity--that are employed in the social sciences to assess the quality of a construct or metric. We argue that evaluations of interrogation tactics using the current standard are both unreliable and invalid. We first argue that the torture standard is unreliable because of the marked variation in the manner in which different jurisdictions interpret and employ it. Next, we draw on recent social psychological …

The Convention On Cluster Munitions: An Incomplete Solution To The Cluster Munition Problem, Daniel J. Raccuia Jan 2011

The Convention On Cluster Munitions: An Incomplete Solution To The Cluster Munition Problem, Daniel J. Raccuia

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

Cluster munitions have been a significant weapon in the world's arsenals for the last half-century, but their use has drawn sharp criticism for its impact on civilian populations. The weapons function by releasing dozens of small "bomblets" over a wide area. For years the debate over these weapons was focused on whether they violated the norms of international humanitarian law, but the 2008 Convention on Cluster Munitions has altered the discussion, banning the weapons outright. However, the major states that use the weapons, including the United States, have not joined the Convention, and the use of cluster munitions continues. This …

Hedge Fund Regulation Via Basel Iii, Wulf A. Kaal Jan 2011

Hedge Fund Regulation Via Basel Iii, Wulf A. Kaal

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

This Article is a rejoinder to a recent comment by Professor Romano on an earlier paper I coauthored with Christian Kirchner. Professor Romano suggests regulatory arbitrage, rather than the targeted regulation of bank lending to hedge funds under Basel II, as a hedge against systemic failure. I contend that it was not harmonization through Basel II but rather the profitability of certain assets and business strategies that caused banks to hold similar assets and engage in similar strategies. In particular, I find that the increasing role of hedge funds in the credit derivatives market, in combination with the market's recent …

A New Standard For Evaluating Claims Of Economic Persecution Under The 1951 Convention Relating To The Status Of Refugees, Lauren M. Ramos Jan 2011

A New Standard For Evaluating Claims Of Economic Persecution Under The 1951 Convention Relating To The Status Of Refugees, Lauren M. Ramos

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

The United Nations Convention and Protocol Relating to the Status of Refugees define the requirements for qualification as a "refugee" and the protection that should be afforded to qualifying persons. Satisfying the Convention definition of refugee usually qualifies a person for asylum; thus, interpretation of its requirements can determine whether an alien is able to escape alleged persecution in his or her country of origin. Currently, 147 countries are parties to the Convention, the Protocol, or both, including the United States. In order to qualify for refugee status, an asylum seeker must prove a well-founded fear of persecution. However, the …

Building A Latin American Coalition On Forests: Negotiation Barriers And Opportunities, Maria Banda, John Oppermann Jan 2011

Building A Latin American Coalition On Forests: Negotiation Barriers And Opportunities, Maria Banda, John Oppermann

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

This Article looks at how these difficulties might be remedied to allow Latin America to lead the world to a robust anti-deforestation agreement. Part I provides a concise background on the REDD talks at the 2009 Copenhagen Climate Conference, which serves as a useful illustration of the substantive and procedural challenges in the ongoing deforestation negotiations. It identifies the main stakeholders at the climate talks and the camps in which national delegations organized themselves at Copenhagen. It then reviews the major substantive roadblocks in the REDD negotiations and identifies a series of analytical, ideological, and structural barriers that impeded significant …

State Immunity And Human Rights: Heads And Walls, Hearts And Minds, Roger O'Keefe Jan 2011

State Immunity And Human Rights: Heads And Walls, Hearts And Minds, Roger O'Keefe

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

This Article suggests that arguments against the availability of state immunity as a bar to civil actions alleging internationally wrongful ill-treatment abroad are not only destined to fall by and large on deaf ears but are also misdirected as a matter both of fairness and of the ultimate policy objectives of human rights advocates. It would make more sense for victims' interest groups to target the failure of allegedly responsible states to afford victims the opportunity of a remedy and the failure of victims' states of nationality to do enough to defend their nationals' interests.

Holding Ourselves To A Higher Standard: Using Standards-Based Grading In Science As A Means To Improve Teaching And Learning, Jesse Wilcox Jan 2011

Holding Ourselves To A Higher Standard: Using Standards-Based Grading In Science As A Means To Improve Teaching And Learning, Jesse Wilcox

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Standards-based grading (SBG) has grown in popularity over the past few years. However, many teachers wonder why they should switch from a traditional grading system. This article explores how standards-based grading can more accurately reflect what students learn and encourage changes in students’ attitude toward learning in the process. This article promotes Iowa Teaching Standards 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8.

The Factors That Are Related To Native American Community College Students' Intent To Persist, Garnet Laureen Williams Jan 2011

The Factors That Are Related To Native American Community College Students' Intent To Persist, Garnet Laureen Williams

Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations

More than half of Native American higher education students choose community colleges as their institution of choice. However, when compared with other ethnic groups, Native American/Alaska Natives (NA/AN) students earn the second-lowest number of associate degrees and the lowest number of bachelor's degrees. Despite this substantive gap, few studies have explored the factors related to Native American community college students' intent to persist. With the projected population surge of NA/AN residents over the next 15 years, more research on the factors related to Native American community college students' intent to persist in college is warranted.

This ex post facto study …

Perceived Satisfaction Of Counseling Doctoral Students With Their Dissertation Chairperson: Examining Selection Criteria And Chairperson Behaviors, Cheryl Warren Neale-Mcfall Jan 2011

Perceived Satisfaction Of Counseling Doctoral Students With Their Dissertation Chairperson: Examining Selection Criteria And Chairperson Behaviors, Cheryl Warren Neale-Mcfall

Counseling & Human Services Theses & Dissertations

The relationship between doctoral students and their chairperson has been linked to students' successful completion of their dissertation and program of study (Gardner, 2009; Lovitts, 2001). It is often the case that failure to complete the dissertation is what prevents doctoral students from completing their degree. When students do not successfully complete their degrees, attrition rates rise and programs and students feel the burden, both financially and as an investment of time. (Bair & Haworth, 2004). Studies indicate that many students fall short of completing the dissertation, or take much longer than expected, due to a lack of supervision or …

Choosing To Serve: Modeling Antecedents Of Public Service Motivation In Undergraduate Students, Vivian Walker Greentree Jan 2011

Choosing To Serve: Modeling Antecedents Of Public Service Motivation In Undergraduate Students, Vivian Walker Greentree

School of Public Service Theses & Dissertations

This research builds upon the public service literature to better understand the distinctive nature of motivations associated with pursuing careers in the public sector. Previous research has shown that a wide variety of socialization experiences help to develop one's public service motivation (PSM). However, the research has fallen short of providing a comprehensive explanation. Additionally, a majority of the research focuses on those already employed in the public sector, with a dearth of exploration into students' preferences. This study utilized Perry's (1996) original survey instrument to measure PSM scores (both composite and dimensions) in college students, those who we must …

Work-Family Balance As A Mediator Of Relationships Between Family-Supportive Organizational Perceptions And Employee And Organization Outcomes, Jaimie Bell Jan 2011

Work-Family Balance As A Mediator Of Relationships Between Family-Supportive Organizational Perceptions And Employee And Organization Outcomes, Jaimie Bell

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Work-family balance is a common term used in organizations with important implications for employees. The purpose of this research was to determine if the antecedent variable family-supportive organizational perceptions were related to four positive outcomes: engagement, intent to quit, physical health, and job tension/strain. More specifically, this research focused on determining whether or not work-family balance was the mediating variable in these four relationships. A 12 item survey was issued to those individuals who met specific inclusion criteria. This criteria stated that respondents had to have at least one dependent child currently living at home as well as work at …

Defining The “Good” Mother: Examining The Myths Of Motherhood And The Hierarchical Construction Of Femininity In Weeds And Weekly Magazines, Johnanna Joy Ganz Jan 2011

Defining The “Good” Mother: Examining The Myths Of Motherhood And The Hierarchical Construction Of Femininity In Weeds And Weekly Magazines, Johnanna Joy Ganz

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Throughout this thesis  investigate how images of motherhood in popular culture rely on specific ideological "myths" to convey implicit messages about appropriate femininity. To examine the depictions of motherhood I performed a textual analysis of the contents of the first two seasons of the television program Weeds as well as randomly sampled issues of the following celebrity gossip magazines: People Weekly, US Weekly, In Touch Weekly, and Life & Style Weekly. In order to make sense of the data, I rely on the theoretical concept of hegemonic femininity, as developed by Mimi Schippers. Additionally, I offer a more nuanced argument …

This chapter begins with an overview of social media in higher education, who is using it and for what, then provides a few talking points to consider with others before beginning a push into social media. The remainder of the chapter includes a few examples of ways in which social media are used to engage alumni and prospective students, including utilizing Twitter as a free SMS service to provide updates to prospective students during their recruitment, creating an iPhone application …

A Descriptive Study Of The Leadership Behaviors Of Ncaa Division I And Ii Head Basketball Coaches As They Pertain To The Path-Goal Theory, Troy Curtis Muilenburg Jan 2011

A Descriptive Study Of The Leadership Behaviors Of Ncaa Division I And Ii Head Basketball Coaches As They Pertain To The Path-Goal Theory, Troy Curtis Muilenburg

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to examine perceived leadership behaviors of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I and II men's basketball head coaches. Specifically, this study examined the training and instruction, social support, and positive feedback behaviors as assessed using the Leadership Scale for Sport (LSS) (Chelladurai & Saleh, 1980). A secondary purpose was to examine potential relationships between these behaviors, win/loss percentages, and head coaching experience. Based on path-goal theory, it was hypothesized that the scores for the training and instruction, social support, and positive feedback behaviors would be high, and there would be a positive relationship …

A Study Of The Relationship Between Mental Toughness And Success In College Basketball, Nathan T. Oakland Jan 2011

A Study Of The Relationship Between Mental Toughness And Success In College Basketball, Nathan T. Oakland

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Mental toughness has been viewed as a vital attribute and characteristic in the world of athletics since the beginning of sport. Mental Toughness began to gain notoriety in the public forum however, when Vince Lombardi won Super Bowl I in 1967 as the Head Coach of the Green Bay Packers. Coaches and athletes alike often speak of mental toughness and its importance, though in the world of athletics, the challenge has been the overall lack of a sound definition of mental toughness. Until recently, research has been sparse on the topic which has led to confusion and misunderstanding of mental …

A Comparison Of Bullying In Public And Private Schools In A Small Midwestern Community, Daniel J. Ryan Jan 2011

A Comparison Of Bullying In Public And Private Schools In A Small Midwestern Community, Daniel J. Ryan

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Little attention has been given to the possible differences in bullying at private and public schools. Little significant research exists on bullying at private schools, its characteristics, and its differences from public schools. Inattention to this segment of the population can lead to broad and inappropriate generalizations that what works in public schools will work in private schools. This dissertation investigated to what degree there were differences between the number of incidences, types of bullying, and locations of bullying that took place at a public and private school in a small Midwestern community. The research examined the following factors and …
