Employee Responses To Job Dissatisfaction, Kristine Vangel
Employee Responses To Job Dissatisfaction, Kristine Vangel
Seminar Research Paper Series
Over the past several years, high unemployment and limited job mobility prospects have kept voluntary employee turnover statistics relatively low. In more favorable job markets, dissatisfied employees are likely to leave undesirable work situations and move on to what they perceive will be more satisfying work relationships. In tight labor markets, dissatisfied employees often find that they are unable to leave dissatisfying jobs. This paper explores two questions pertaining to retention of dissatisfied employees. What can we expect, in terms of turnover, when the job market becomes more favorable to job seekers and how do dissatisfied employees who remain with …
Human Capital Investment In The Developing World: An Analysis Of Praxis, Adeyemi O. Ogunade
Human Capital Investment In The Developing World: An Analysis Of Praxis, Adeyemi O. Ogunade
Seminar Research Paper Series
Human capital has been identified as a key stimulus of economic development. This paper evaluates the efficacy of human capital development (HCD) practices in the developing world. Drawing predominantly from classical human capital theory, I developed a tentative framework to evaluate national skills development efforts. It determines the efficacy of HCD practices, by matching workforce skills to the level of technological development and national training objectives. A look at national training policies in Singapore, South Africa and India, suggests that developing countries need to adopt a nuanced approach to HCD to be competitive in the global market. This study questions …
Generation Y ; An Exploratory Study Of Worker Experiences, Values And Attitudes In The Federal Government, Antoine D. Moss
Generation Y ; An Exploratory Study Of Worker Experiences, Values And Attitudes In The Federal Government, Antoine D. Moss
ETD Archive
As a result of the unprecedented retirement wave within the federal government, federal agencies are aggressively recruiting young professionals that have been categorized as Generation Y. However, there is currently a lack of systematic research that has been conducted on this new cohort of employees particularly, within the federal government. A lot of the available information that pertains to Generation Y can be classified as pop journalism, as opposed to scholarly research. Furthermore, many federal leaders are utilizing this information along with outdated traditional management assumptions about employee motivation to design and develop their public organizations. This tenuous approach can …
Performance Funding Of State Public Higher Education;Has It Delivered The Desired External Accountability And Institutional Improvement?, Mark M. Polatajko
Performance Funding Of State Public Higher Education;Has It Delivered The Desired External Accountability And Institutional Improvement?, Mark M. Polatajko
ETD Archive
In today's economic climate, state public institutions of higher education face challenges on multiple fronts. This applies particularly to state funding as it relates to the financing of the mission of the institutions. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the effectiveness of allocating state resources to state public institutions of higher education by comparing results from performance funding states to non-performance funding states. The focus was to determine whether the change to the performance funding methodology delivered the desired external accountability and institutional improvement in state public higher education. The research question guiding this study was: To …
Not Seeing The Joke: The Overlooked Role Of Humour In Researching Television Production, Edward Brennan
Not Seeing The Joke: The Overlooked Role Of Humour In Researching Television Production, Edward Brennan
Articles
This article argues that humour can provide researchers with a unique access point into the professional cultures of media producers. By reconsidering an earlier case study, and reviewing relevant literature, it illustrates how humour can fulfil several functions in media production. Importantly, humour is a central means of performing the ‘emotional labour’ that increasingly precarious media work demands. For production research, the everyday joking and banter of media workers can provide an important and, heretofore, overlooked means of accessing culture, meaning, consensus and conflict in media organizations. The article argues that humour’s organizational role should be considered as a sensitizing …
Business Models And Performance: Entrepreneurial Aspects In The New York Wine Industry, David Brannon
Business Models And Performance: Entrepreneurial Aspects In The New York Wine Industry, David Brannon
Management - Dissertations
This dissertation is about innovation - the setting is business models. I have defined innovativeness in business models as a novel departure from what others in the same industry are using for their business model design. Utilizing evolutionary theory, I focus upon organizational routines to identify innovation. I explored characteristics within the firm associated with innovativeness in the business model including customer information processes; willingness to pursue experimentation and complexity added to the business model from the addition of non-core products. Inertia in the firm was considered as a moderator between each of these variables and innovativeness. Performance was measured …
Evaluation Of A Quality Management Initiative And Hiv Ambulatory Services Performance In Thailand, Meemon Natthani
Evaluation Of A Quality Management Initiative And Hiv Ambulatory Services Performance In Thailand, Meemon Natthani
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The accomplishment of pilot implementation of the HIVQUAL-T model, an innovative HIV care quality management tool, has led to an authoritative decision to scale up the use of the model nationwide in Thailand. However, the level of implementing this model varies across target hospitals. Some hospitals have fully adopted the model by conducting quality improvement (QI) activities following performance measurement (PM) results while others have partially adopted only PM or have not used this model at all. The differential level of implementation could be a contributing factor accounting for discrepancies in the quality of care across different HIV ambulatory care …

Using A Measure Of Occupational Stereotype To Assess Ingroup-Outgroup Bias Among Aerospace Specializations, Richard G. Moffett Iii, Michael B. Hein, Glenn L. Littlepage
International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2011
Safe and efficient flight operations require the effective intergroup coordination across multiple aerospace specializations. Various factors can impact this coordination including attitudes such as occupational stereotypes. This study reports on the development of a measure to assess ingroupoutgroup bias among aerospace specializations. Students from six aerospace specializations (Administration, Aircraft Maintenance, Air Traffic Control, Flight Dispatch and Scheduling, Professional Pilot, and Technology) at a southern university completed a questionnaire designed to assess stereotypes using adjectives to describe the members of ingroups and outgroups. Results indicate that students who had identified themselves as pilots or dispatchers exhibited ingroupoutgroup bias but in different …

Program Fidelity And Teacher Decisions: A Case Study Of The Renaissance Learning Program, Jennifer D. Putnam
Education Dissertations and Projects
This dissertation was designed to examine the degree to which the fidelity of implementation of the Renaissance Learning program impacts teacher instruction, as well as teacher perception of student reading motivation and achievement. The teachers at a western North Carolina elementary school used the Renaissance Learning program for over 15 years, with little training. The school's end-of-grade test scores in reading were below the state and district averages, indicating that many of the students were struggling readers. At the start of the 2010-2011 school year, the teachers attended a professional development seminar and were trained on the best uses of …

The Impact Of A Freshman Academy On High School Transition, Sherry Grier Veasey
Education Dissertations and Projects
This dissertation was designed to identify and describe the impact a freshman academy has on high school transition for ninth-grade students at a rural high school in western North Carolina. This case study investigated the problems ninth graders encounter as they transition from middle school to high school. The study examined student achievement, student attendance, and the graduation rate in an effort to determine whether a freshman academy at the high school helped students transition successfully.
The transition to high school may be difficult for some students because of the countless changes they are experiencing as adolescents. The high school …

Understanding Collaboration, Its Antecedents And Perceived Outcomes In Service Partnerships Of Community-Based Organizations, Maritza Concha
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to assess the motivations of community-based organizations (CBOs) staff to participate in service partnerships and their influence on collaboration practices and perceived outcomes of collaborative efforts. This study uses structural equation modeling to assess the relationships between exogenous variables (motivational factors) and endogenous variables (inter-organizational collaboration and perceived outcomes). This study also uses qualitative methods to address perceptions on collaboration not captured by the survey instrument. A total of 538 service partnership staff (supervisors and front liners) received the survey's link or a copy of the survey to participate. Out of the 538, 217 …
Accounting On English Landed Estates During The Agricultural Revolution -- A Textbook Perspective, John Richard Edwards
Accounting On English Landed Estates During The Agricultural Revolution -- A Textbook Perspective, John Richard Edwards
Accounting Historians Journal
The agricultural revolution has been portrayed as the time when landowners began to display a capitalist mentality. This paper seeks to add to our knowledge of the use of accounting for managerial purposes during this period by exploring the content of treatises advocating different ways of accounting on landed estates. Two research questions are addressed. The first is the degree of inter-relationship between accounting methods charge-and-discharge accounting (CDA) and double-entry bookkeeping that have been presented in the literature as distinct in terms of their objectives and operation. The second objective is to assess the extent to which CDA could be …

More specifically, the study intended to (a) give an overview of faculty members' current stage in the innovation-decision process in regards to online education, (b) examine faculty perceptions about attributes (motivating factors) and barriers (inhibiting factors) impacting diffusion of online education, (c) investigate the relationship between faculty members' selected personal characteristics (including age, years of teaching, DE experience, gender, academic …
Entrepreneurial Passion: Sources And Sustenance, Melissa S. Cardon Phd, Michael Glauser
Entrepreneurial Passion: Sources And Sustenance, Melissa S. Cardon Phd, Michael Glauser
Wilson Center for Social Entrepreneurship
Entrepreneurial passion helps coordinate cognition and behavior of entrepreneurs, providing the fire that fuels innovation, persistence, and ultimate success. But where does entrepreneurial passion come from? Using a phenomenological approach, we conduct a qualitative study of 80 entrepreneurs and analyze their oral histories to explore the sources of entrepreneurial passion, as experienced by entrepreneurs. Our discovery process in the interviews suggests six major sources of entrepreneurial passion: passion for building/developing the venture, passion for people, passion for the product or service, passion for inventing, passion for competition, and passion for a social cause.

How Cios Overcome The Competing Values Challenge: Irish Cios’ Perspectives, Harvey Enns, Dean B. Mcfarlin, Paul B. Sweeney
MIS/OM/DS Faculty Publications
Competing values are a fact of organizational life. However, there are gaps in our understanding about how these opposing beliefs hinder influence processes. This article draws on interview data to demonstrate how Irish Chief Information Officers (CIOs) are able to convince their colleagues to support new projects within their firms in the face of competing values. Focused interviews were used to explore the influence process and the competing values phenomenon, since this type of research is at an early stage and qualitative methods and analysis serve as a rich source of theory development.
The data showed that the CIOs who …

Ducks And Decoys: Revisiting The Exit-Voice-Loyalty Framework In Assessing The Impact Of A Workplace Dispute Resolution System, Zev J. Eigen, Adam Seth Litwin
Faculty Working Papers
Until now, empirical research has been unable to reliably identify the impact of organizational dispute resolution systems (DRSs) on the workforce at large, in part because of the dearth of data tracking employee perceptions pre- and post- implementation. This study begins to fill this major gap by exploiting survey data from a single, geographically-expansive, US firm with well over 100,000 employees in over a thousand locations. The research design allows us to examine employment relations and human resource (HR) measures, namely, perceptions of justice, organizational commitment, and perceived legal compliance, in the same locations before and after the implementation of …
Sex Equality's Unnamed Nemesis, Veronica Percia
Sex Equality's Unnamed Nemesis, Veronica Percia
Michigan Journal of Gender & Law
Sex inequality still exists. However, its manifestations have evolved since the early sex inequality cases were heard in courts and legislatures first began structuring statutory regimes to combat it. In particular, so-called "facial" discrimination against men and women on the basis of sex has no doubt decreased since the advent of this legal assault on sex inequality. Yet the gendered assumptions that structure our institutions and interactions have proven resilient. With sex discrimination now operating more covertly, the problem of sex inequality looks considerably different than it once did. Courts, however, have failed to successfully respond to the changing contours …

Sustaining Reform Efforts At The Sec: A Progress Report, Joan Macleod Heminway
Scholarly Works
Many recent articles written by U.S. legal practitioners and law scholars in the wake of the financial crisis address regulatory reforms included in or omitted from the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act (Dodd-Frank Act) and related agency initiatives. In contrast, this article focuses on institutional reforms - specifically those instituted at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) since President Barack Obama took office in January 2009.
In an article published in the Villanova Law Review last year, I assessed the early reform efforts at the SEC in the Obama era from the vantage point of change …

The Development Of A P-20 Educational Campus: A Case Study On Innovation, Richard R. Patterson
The Development Of A P-20 Educational Campus: A Case Study On Innovation, Richard R. Patterson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Tyack & Tobin (1994, p. 454) describe that the “grammar of schooling,” like the shape of classrooms, has remained remarkably stable over the decades. This has frustrated generations of reformers who have fought to change standardized organizational traditions. Typically school reform has taken the form of innovations in education. Unfortunately, educational innovations don't usually last long or they were never truly innovations in the first place but rather a repackaging or reintroduction of age-old customary practices.
The “Eos Public Schools” set out on a mission to integrate P-20 educational reform into its overall school system as a way to confront …
Beyond The Paradoxical Shadow Of A Doubt: A Powerful Bond That Sustains Servant-Leaders In Their Struggle For Truth And Justice, Dung Q. Tran
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
The comprehensive study of leadership phenomena matters. Reasons abound for the need of both formal and informal leadership research in various contexts. Spears (1998) recognized the emergence of a significant "leadership and management paradigm for the 21st century" (p. xix). Jackson and Parry (2008) claimed that "leadership is widely seen as both the problem and solution to all manner of contemporary issues" (p. 9). A key buzzword in our modern times, leadership has "become a major issue in all forms of organizations" (Doohan, 2007, p. I). In the world of higher education, Greenleaf (1998) identified a "serious crisis of leadership …
