Building Instructional Leadership Capacity Of School Leaders Through Technology Integration, Joy Carey May 2011

Building Instructional Leadership Capacity Of School Leaders Through Technology Integration, Joy Carey

Theses and Dissertations

Research suggested that the acquisition of technology instructional leadership skills develops principals' abilities to become agents of change. "A firm foundation in technology knowledge, skills relative to the instructional process, and leadership and managerial skills in technology are required" (Geer, 2002, p. 57). It was critical for principals to enhance their technological communication skills, managerial applications, knowledge on information processing, and promote technology instruction methods in order to increase student learning (Daresh, 2006). The purpose of this action research project was to provide six school district principals with technology professional development, which enabled them to become effective instructional leaders for …

Creative Consciousness: Becoming A Reflective Designer, Renessa Ciampa Brewer May 2011

Creative Consciousness: Becoming A Reflective Designer, Renessa Ciampa Brewer

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

As a graphic designer, I was drawn to the CCT Program in part because I desired to strengthen my thinking skills as a creative professional. Through being reflective, I aimed to “get more in touch” with my process to better understand it and see how I might improve my approaches. Scholarship on reflective practice in design education and design practice is a growing body of literature, which inspired this synthesis project. This paper looks at Schön’s theories of reflection-in-action and reflection-on-action, models for reflection in the design process provided by Ellmers, Brown, and Bennett, and Reymen, and various reflective practice …

The Terminal Classic At El Mirador, Peten, Guatemala., Richard M. Allen May 2011

The Terminal Classic At El Mirador, Peten, Guatemala., Richard M. Allen

Theses and Dissertations

Recent excavations uncovered numerous small rooms constructed on top of the Danta Acropolis at El Mirador, Guatemala. The characteristics of the settlement and the material items indicated that it was a late occupation and lacked the features associated with large Maya polities and Classic Maya culture. This thesis focused on describing the continuities and changes that occurred from the Late Classic to the Terminal Classic at El Mirador based on the ceramic assemblage and architecture. Significant continuity and stability of the pottery making community is reflected in the ceramic assemblage. Additionally, it was desirable to gain an understanding of how …

Image-Building As An Element Of The It Specialist's Social Role, Agnieszka Postuła, Dominika Latusek-Jurczak

European Management Studies

The aim of this paper is to analyse and present conclusions of two field studies regarding the creation of image of the IT specialists' profession. Our research shows that IT professionals seem not to attach much importance to their image. Instead, they prefer to focus on everyday work and tasks, sending a specific signal to the environment, saying that the knowledge and daily challenges are the most valuable source of professional satisfaction for them. The relation between employees of IT companies and their customers is particularly interesting. In this article we try to show the complexity of this relationship as …

Existing Prototyping Perspectives: Considerations For Service Design, Johan Blomkvist, Stefan Holmlid

Nordes Conference Series

With new design disciplines that challenge the borders of design practice and inquiry comes new possibilities for prototyping techniques and approaches. The basis for such an evolution is a firm understanding of the existing knowledge generated in design and the challenges posed by new design disciplines, such as service design. This study identifies a framework of perspectives for prototyping to reveal what the existing toolbox of prototyping contains based on a literature overview. Going through published literature from the early 1980s and onward, the framework is constructed using the following perspectives; purpose, fidelity, audience, position in the process, technique, and …

Gender Equity In The Sciences": Forging A "Third Space", Nancy Cantor

Chancellor's Collection

We’re coming to the end of the college graduation season, and many of us are still thinking about the brilliant and hopeful young women who have passed through our lives and are now moving on. Their life chances have been --- and will be --- deeply intertwined with our own, and as we think about creating gender equity in the spaces we inhabit, we are also talking about them and all that depends on our success.

Using A Telephone Reminder System To Improve Pneumococcal Vaccination Rates For Medicare Recipients, Julie A. Koch May 2011

Using A Telephone Reminder System To Improve Pneumococcal Vaccination Rates For Medicare Recipients, Julie A. Koch

Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports

Despite recent advances in healthcare, Streptococcus pneumonia-associated infections contribute to significant morbidity and mortality in older adults. Because of the pneumococcal vaccine’s efficacy for preventing invasive disease, guidelines for vaccinating older adults have been developed; yet, the nation has not met immunization goals. The purpose of this EBP project was to determine if a telephone reminder, as compared to provider recommendation, would increase pneumococcal vaccination rates. The Iowa model and Kotter’s eight stages of change guided this project within a multi-provider office in Northwest Indiana. Within the practice, Medicare patients scheduled from September 1 to November 10, 2010 received a …

Interventions To Improve The Management Of Medically Uninsured Adult Patients With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus In Primary Care, Community-Based Settings, Lynn Miskovich May 2011

Interventions To Improve The Management Of Medically Uninsured Adult Patients With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus In Primary Care, Community-Based Settings, Lynn Miskovich

Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports

This project measured the effect of a clinical algorithm on the provision of care to medically uninsured adult patients with type 2 diabetes and a low socioeconomic status (SES). Primary providers often fail to implement established standards for diabetes care to their maximal benefit and do not achieve American Diabetes Association (ADA) treatment standards. Saydah, et al. (2004) reported that only 48% of patients with diabetes achieved the recommended HbA1c goal, and 33% reached blood pressure and LDL targets. Goals for all three clinical parameters were obtained by only 7% of patients. The Stetler Model of Evidence-based Practice (EBP) provided …

Changing Times: Engaging Faculty In Online Education, Steven Farney

Theses and Dissertations

The Internet has become a popular vehicle for the delivery of programs and courses among institutions of higher education. Nevertheless, it appears that many faculty members are still resistant to engage in online delivery based on biases and preconceptions rather than facts. The purpose of this action research project was to learn positive and negative views of faculty at Rowan University regarding online delivery of courses in an attempt to increase their participation in this mode of delivery. Additionally the researcher sought to explore if faculty concerns about online education could be addressed, clarified, or dispelled. The research was conducted …

Development Of Physiologic Contact Models For Articular Surfaces, John Owen May 2011

Development Of Physiologic Contact Models For Articular Surfaces, John Owen

Theses and Dissertations

The superficial tangential zone (STZ) plays a significant role in normal articular cartilage’s ability to support loads and retain fluids. To date, tissue engineering efforts have not replicated normal STZ function in cartilage repairs. Finite element models were developed to examine the STZ’s role in normal and repaired articular surfaces under different contact conditions. Models were developed by incrementally adding improvements which culminated in contact loading of curved models by permeable and impermeable rigid surfaces and a normal cartilage layer. In the normal STZ, permeability was strain-dependent on volumetric strain; tension-compression nonlinearity modeled collagen behavior. Nonlinear geometry accounted for finite …

Work-School Conflict And Work School Enrichment: A Student's Perspective On Taking On Multiple Roles Through On-Campus And Off-Campus Employment, Flora Dakas May 2011

Work-School Conflict And Work School Enrichment: A Student's Perspective On Taking On Multiple Roles Through On-Campus And Off-Campus Employment, Flora Dakas

Honors Scholar Theses

This study investigated how the location of employment, on or off-campus, may affect student experiences of negative and positive spillover from the work role to the academic role. It was hypothesized that work-to-school conflict (WSC) would be positively associated with the number of hours devoted to the employment role. Beyond that, it was hypothesized that both WSC and work-to-school enrichment (WSE) would be greater for students who are employed in off-campus jobs as opposed to students who work in on-campus positions. In addition, it was hypothesized that negative and positive spillover from work roles to school roles will contribute to …

Assessing The Implementation Of A Non-Profit Organizational Change Initiative Using Kotter’S (1995) 8 Step Change Model., Anna Lora Richesin May 2011

Assessing The Implementation Of A Non-Profit Organizational Change Initiative Using Kotter’S (1995) 8 Step Change Model., Anna Lora Richesin

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Increased emphasis on process improvements in all organizations challenges leaders to institute change. Using a case study approach, the current research examined an organizational change initiative embarked on by the leadership of a local non-profit organization to obtain improvement in service delivery and acquire outcome measurements. There is little in the literature concerning organizational change initiatives and the use of change models in the non-profit sector. This study examined staff perception of an organizational change initiative using Kotter’s (1995) 8 step change model as benchmarks of success. Kotter’s (1995) 8 Steps for Change is a popular change model often used …

The Logic Of Aid: American Foreign Policy And Usaid In Rwanda, Ariel F. Hendrickson May 2011

The Logic Of Aid: American Foreign Policy And Usaid In Rwanda, Ariel F. Hendrickson

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

Since the end of World War II, development aid has become a permanent fixture of U.S. foreign policy. The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has been the primary organization for implementing the American government’s development policies. Because of this, USAID provides an excellent lens for viewing the historical trajectory of American development aid. USAID’s experience in Rwanda demonstrates the broad policy shifts that define this historical trajectory. During the 1960s, modernization theory directed development projects. In the 1970s this shifted to a needs-based mandate, and during the 1980s market liberalization programs defined USAID’s objectives. The rich relationship between …

The Illinois Critical Access Network (ICAHN) is a not-for-profit entity that works with member critical access hospitals to share resources, provide education opportunities, promote operational efficiency and improve health services in their respective communities. In 2006, ICAHN partnered with the Center for Governmental Studies (CGS) at Northern Illinois University (NIU) to analyze the economic impact critical access hospitals (CAHs) generate in Illinois. This project builds on that work. The current project updates information on the effects of CAH designation on various aspects of CAH operations, including revenues and expenditures. This report examines four additional areas: the current economic condition of …

Minor Incidents With Major Impacts: The Effects Of Bottom-Up Incivility On Supervisor Targets, Abby Meador May 2011

Minor Incidents With Major Impacts: The Effects Of Bottom-Up Incivility On Supervisor Targets, Abby Meador

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Incivility within organizations is a rampant problem with dire consequences, including adverse effects on both job satisfaction and psychological states. This study was conducted to address the gap in the current literature that looks at incivility within organizations. To date, no studies have assessed the impact of bottom-up incivility (i.e., incivility that is directed from subordinates to supervisors) on supervisor targets. Thus, this study investigated the impact of bottom-up forms of incivility of supervisors’ mental and physical states, as well as their levels of job satisfaction. However, due to small sample sizes, the current research was expanded to address the effects …

Constructive Noncooperation: Living In Truth, Mark A. Mattaini, Kristen Atkinson May 2011

Constructive Noncooperation: Living In Truth, Mark A. Mattaini, Kristen Atkinson

Peace and Conflict Studies

Mohandas Gandhi often indicated that nonviolence was “a science,” and he appears to have meant this literally. Consistent with this vision, in this paper, we outline and apply principles of behavioral systems science, an emerging data-based approach to understanding the dynamics of complex cultural systems, to the practice of constructive noncooperation (Gandhi’s “constructive programme”). Although Gandhi emphasized that constructive action was the most important and potent of nonviolent strategic options, constructive alternatives have been the least developed in the literature of nonviolent struggle. The reconceptualization of constructive noncooperation in behavioral systems terms offered here suggests that rigorous analysis of Havel’s …
