Implications Of Economic Growth On Poverty Levels In Putin’S Russia, 2000-2008., Sergey Maltsev Oct 2011

Implications Of Economic Growth On Poverty Levels In Putin’S Russia, 2000-2008., Sergey Maltsev

Undergraduate Economic Review

Devastating economic performance of the first years of Russia’s transition seemed to have reversed since the beginning of Vladimir Putin’s presidency. This work investigates whether the economic growth which occurred in Russia between 2000 and 2008 benefited all and the poor in particular. With the panel data from Rosstat we commence OLS, Fixed Effect and Random Effect regressions to find significant evidence that economic growth of the analysed period was pro-poor, however it was also associated with rising income inequality. Besides, we find that economic growth accounted for little variation in some other indicators of social welfare (education, housing, healthcare).

Psychology and Child Development

This report is the second in a Series on early child development in low-income and middle-income countries and assesses the effectiveness of early child development interventions, such as parenting support and preschool enrollment. The evidence reviewed suggests that early child development can be improved through these interventions, with effects greater for programmes of higher quality and for the most vulnerable children. Other promising interventions for the promotion of early child development include children’s educational media, interventions with children at high risk, and combining the promotion of early child development with conditional cash transfer programmes. Effective investments in early child development …

Anchor Institutions-Connecting With Community For Innovation And Opportunity, Nancy Cantor

Chancellor's Collection

On the surface, it would be hard to find institutions situated more differently than Syracuse University in upstate New York and the University of Texas in the Rio Grande Valley. We are a private university in a post-industrial Rust Belt city. For nearly 60 years, residents have been leaving the city for the hilly lake country around us, ignoring both the city’s attractions and the drawbacks of commuting by car through 170 inches of snow a year. Even the SU campus, which sits on a hill close to downtown, was cut off from the city center by the construction of …

Learning To Live Without A Statistical Abstract: Thinking About Future Access To Government Information, James T. Shaw Oct 2011

Learning To Live Without A Statistical Abstract: Thinking About Future Access To Government Information, James T. Shaw

Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

Twenty-four years ago, in 1987, I made a presentation called “Basic Ready Reference: Documents that a Reference Librarian Cannot Live Without” at a meeting of the Iowa Library Association Government Documents Round Table. My top recommendation was the Statistical Abstract of the United States, that annual compendium of data so familiar and indispensible to American librarians everywhere. Twelve years ago, in 1999, I made a similar presentation at the NLA/NEMA Annual Conference, and again the Statistical Abstract took its place as the preeminent resource.

The title of my presentation today, “Learning to Live Without a Statistical Abstract,” signals …

Blood pressure is a heritable trait influenced by several biological pathways and responsive to environmental stimuli. Over one billion people worldwide have hypertension (≥140mmg Hg systolic blood pressure ≥90mmg Hg diastolic blood pressure). Even small increments in blood pressure are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular events. This genome-wide association study of systolic and diastolic blood pressure, which used a multi-stage design in 200,000 individuals of European descent, identified sixteen novel loci: six of these loci contain genes previously known or suspected to regulate blood pressure (GUCY1A3 GUCY1B3, NPR3 C5orf23, ADM, FURIN FES, GOSR2, GNAS EDN3); the other ten …
