Indirect Screening: Enhancing Identification Of Illicit Drug Use During Pregnancy, Courtney Smith
Indirect Screening: Enhancing Identification Of Illicit Drug Use During Pregnancy, Courtney Smith
Theses and Dissertations
OBJECTIVE: Most drug use screening measures rely on and are validated against self-report. Fear of negative consequences often promotes denial of drug use. For pregnant women, social stigma and fear of legal consequences make underreporting of drug use even more likely. An indirect screener that could effectively identify pregnant women at risk for illicit drug use without reliance on disclosure would be clinically significant. The purpose of the current study was to develop and validate an indirect measure of prenatal drug use by comparing correlates of prenatal drug use to urinalysis results. METHOD: Pregnant women attending an OB appointment at …

Concentrations of liver enzymes in plasma are widely used as indicators of liver disease. We carried out a genome-wide association study in 61,089 individuals, identifying 42 loci associated with concentrations of liver enzymes in plasma, of which 32 are new associations (P = 10−8 to P = 10−190). We used functional genomic approaches including metabonomic profiling and gene expression analyses to identify probable candidate genes at these regions. We identified 69 candidate genes, including genes involved in biliary transport (ATP8B1 and ABCB11), glucose, carbohydrate and lipid metabolism (FADS1, FADS2, GCKR, JMJD1C, HNF1A …

Since the late 1980’s, producer awareness of pasture management has been increasing. A number of factors have brought this about. Mainly, economic conditions have forced producers to look at their bottom line and this has reflected the low returns from mismanagement of forages and pastures. Also, advancements in the technology of pasture management and improvement have made more intensive utilization of the forage resource more economically viable. Advances in equipment, especially fencing and water equipment, have also helped bring about the increased interest in better grassland management.

The Crosstalk Between Human Fatty Acid Transport Protein 1 And Fatty Acid Transport Protein 4, Zhe Yuan
The Crosstalk Between Human Fatty Acid Transport Protein 1 And Fatty Acid Transport Protein 4, Zhe Yuan
Department of Biochemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Fatty acid transport proteins (FATPs) provide pivotal roles in fatty acid transport and activation and thus are crucial for overall fatty acid homeostasis. Peroxisome Proliferators Activated Receptors (PPARs) are important transcription factors, which control many genes that govern lipid metabolism.
Using 293 T-REx cell lines that stably express FATP1 or FATP4 from a tetracycline-inducible promoter, this work evaluated gene expression of key genes involved in fatty acid metabolism using QPCR, protein expression of FATP1 and FATP4 using Western blots, and fatty acid transport to address the roles of these two FATP isoforms in fatty acid homeostasis. This work found that …

Pre- And Post-Bronchodilator Lung Function As Predictors Of Mortality In The Lung Health Study, David M. Mannino, Enrique Diaz-Guzman, Sonia Buist
Pre- And Post-Bronchodilator Lung Function As Predictors Of Mortality In The Lung Health Study, David M. Mannino, Enrique Diaz-Guzman, Sonia Buist
Preventive Medicine and Environmental Health Faculty Publications
BACKGROUND: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is supposed to be classified on the basis of post-bronchodilator lung function. Most longitudinal studies of COPD, though, do not have post-bronchodilator lung function available. We used pre-and post bronchodilator lung function data from the Lung Health Study to determine whether these measures differ in their ability to predict mortality.
METHODS: We limited our analysis to subjects who were of black or white race, on whom we had complete data, and who participated at either the 1 year or the 5 year follow-up visit. We classified subjects based on their baseline lung function, according …

Capstone Experiences: Effects Of Adapted Physical Activity Design Projects On Attitudes And Learning, David W. Hey, Bridie Jean Mccarey, Lynne A. Slivovsky, J. Kevin Taylor, Brian Self, James Widmann
Kinesiology and Public Health
Eight innovative senior level capstone engineering projects were completed at California Polytechnic State University (2008-present) involving (n=28) students (23 male/5 female). All projects involved the design of equipment to facilitate physical activity for people with disabilities. The effects on: i) learning design, ii) attitude towards people with disabilities, and iii) motivation to complete team design projects were analyzed through eight one-hour focus groups. This paper presents focus group findings using a constructivist approach and grounded theory to explore the overall student “learn by doing” experience. Results: (1) Approximately 19 (70%) of the students claimed the adapted physical activity …
Death And Dying In The Curriculum Of Public Schools: Is There A Place?, Ethel King-Mckenzie
Death And Dying In The Curriculum Of Public Schools: Is There A Place?, Ethel King-Mckenzie
Journal of Emerging Knowledge on Emerging Markets
Death and dying is not myth but a reality of life and living. Though some of us view death as a stranger and try to evade its existence as much as we can, death is inevitable. This paper proposes the inclusion of death and dying in the school curriculum and offers several ways of integrating death and dying in the curriculum for different grade levels. It argues that death has visited frequently on our school campuses and in national life over the past decades and there is always a sense of despair, panic and uncertainty about how to react to …

The 2007 Chinese Pet Food Crisis: On U.S. Media’S Coverage And U.S. Pet-Owners Reactions, May Hongmei Gao
Journal of Emerging Knowledge on Emerging Markets
In the midst of U.S. citizens’ growing concern of food quality, few issues have shocked the American conscience as the 2007 pet food crisis. The crisis, caused by the contamination of mainly pet food with ingredients imported from China, resulted in the largest recall in U.S. history. Poisonous chemicals such as “melamine,” “aminopterin,” and “cyanuric acid” were identified in pet food products imported from China. The pet food contamination was eventually extended to the feed for fish, pigs, and chicken, animals destined to be part of human food supply. This research showed that most American families own cats and dogs …
Measuring Development Through Women’S Empowerment: A Case Of Comparison, Brazil & Bolivia, Stephanie Roberts, Kishore G. Kulkarni
Measuring Development Through Women’S Empowerment: A Case Of Comparison, Brazil & Bolivia, Stephanie Roberts, Kishore G. Kulkarni
Journal of Emerging Knowledge on Emerging Markets
In the past several decades there has been a growing awareness of the importance of women’s empowerment in overall development. It is not sufficient to consider only economic growth, but rather we must also look to human development (and specifically that of women) when observing progress in any country. This can be difficult to define and measure, as one must be sensitive to cultural and historical differences as well as overall standards of living for a society. However, even considering these differences, it is essential that women be equal partners in the development process for their nations to truly be …
