Cross-Validation Of A Recently Published Equation Predicting Energy Expenditure To Run Or Walk A Mile In Normal Weight And Overweight Adults, Cody Edward Morris
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
An equation recently published by Loftin, et al. (2010) was cross-validated using 30 subjects consisting of 10 normal weight walkers, 10 overweight walkers, and 10 distance runners. Gender was balanced across sub-groups. Participants walked or ran for 5 minutes at their preferred pace. Preferred walking pace was determined by six timed 50-ft trials and preferred running pace by the runner's typical training pace. Energy expenditure (EE) was determined via indirect calorimetry and reported in absolute units (kcal), and corrected to a mile distance. Body composition was assessed via DXA. EE per mile was predicted using the Loftin, et al. (2010) …

A Qualitative Analysis Of Homeless Women With Children In Transitional Housing: What Are Their Needs?, Urmi B. Jani
A Qualitative Analysis Of Homeless Women With Children In Transitional Housing: What Are Their Needs?, Urmi B. Jani
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
In 2004, the National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty indicated that approximately 3.5 million people experienced homelessness. The literature indicates that families, specifically female-headed ones, are the fastest growing segment of the homeless population. The development of transitional housing has shown promise by seeking to move these homeless families towards independent living. A qualitative study based in grounded theory was utilized to explore the experiences of 10 female homeless participants at two regional transitional living facilities. Consistent themes that emerged included dissolution of relationships and a lack of personal supports as being the primary pathways that lead to homelessness. …

Changes In Appetite And Eating Behavior Associated With The Combination Of Sibutramine And Behavior Therapy, Raymond Carvajal
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
This archival-data study assessed the potentially complementary mechanisms of action of sibutramine and behavior therapy (also known as lifestyle modification) believed to be responsible for the greater weight loss observed with combining the two approaches than with either approach alone. One hundred and seventy-one subjects were randomly assigned to receive 15 mg of sibutramine per day alone, delivered by a primary-care provider in five brief office visits; behavior therapy alone, delivered by a psychologist in
18 group sessions; and sibutramine (15 mg/day) plus 18 group sessions of behavior therapy (i.e., combined therapy). Mixed effects linear model analysis was used to …

Productivity in desert ecosystems is primarily limited by water followed by nitrogen availability. In the deserts of southern California, nitrogen additions have increased invasive annual plant abundance. Similar findings from other ecosystems have led to a general acceptance that invasive plants, especially annual grasses, are nitrophilous. Consequently, reductions of soil nitrogen via carbon amendments have been conducted by many researchers in a variety of ecosystems in order to disproportionately lower invasive species abundance, but with mixed success. Recent studies suggest that resource-use traits may predict the efficacy of such resource manipulations; however, this theory remains largely untested. We report findings …

Most infective organisms have developed resistance against antibiotics. There is need to find other means to deliver antibiotics locally. There appears to be limited studies on the use of gentamicin sulphate iontophoresis in wound management. The participant in this study was a subject diagnosed with mild head injury secondary to motor vehicle accident who later developed a unilateral pressure sore on the left gluteal region. The subject received 15-minutes of gentamicin sulphate iontophoresis (Interrupted Direct Current) three times a week for five weeks. The case report showed that there was a 65.7% reduction in wound surface area of the decubitus …

Exercise and Sport Studies: Faculty Publications
As part of the insulin signalling pathway, Akt influences growth and metabolism. The AKT1 gene G205T (rs1130214) polymorphism has potential functional effects. Thus, we determined whether the G205T polymorphism influences metabolic variables and their responses to aerobic exercise training. Following dietary stabilization, healthy, sedentary, 50- to 75-year-old Caucasian men (n= 51) and women (n= 58) underwent 6 months of aerobic exercise training. Before and after completing the intervention, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry was used to measure percentage body fat, computed tomography to measure visceral and subcutaneous fat, and oral glucose tolerance testing to measure glucose total area under the curve (AUC), …

Proposed Elements In The Compendium On National Drought Policy, Mannava V.K. Sivakumar, Roger Pulwarty, Donald A. Wilhite, Justin Ginnetti
National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications
Crisis management has typically characterized governmental response to drought. This approach has been ineffective, leading to untimely and poorly coordinated responses. The growing frequency and magnitude of droughts in many parts of the world call for the development of a pro-active, risk-based approach, the tenets of which are outlined in a national drought policy. Improved management of drought requires completion of a vulnerability assessment at the outset to determine those sectors, regions, and population groups most at risk to severe drought. Each country is unique in its vulnerability and institutional capacity to prepare for and respond to drought. Since the …

Public School Performance: Examining The Relationship Between Teacher Training Program And School Achievement, Lindsay Griffith
MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects
Few would argue the importance of providing today‟s youth with a solid educational foundation, yet the United States ranks as low as 25th educationally among 34 OECD developed nations1 . Many researchers have studied the various factors affecting student performance in the K-12 educational system, but mixed, ambiguous, or conflicting results have led to a general sense of uncertainty regarding who to hold accountable. The research has tended to focus on teacher effectiveness or school funding. While those are among a wealth of valid inputs to examine, this study attempted to determine the viability of examining the effect of teacher …

Few Americans today know who Ferdinand Pecora was, although he was once a media superstar, a nearly daily fixture in newspapers and radio broadcasts across the country. With the onset of our current economic woes his name has slowly begun to crop up again. In April 2009, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called for a new "Pecora Commission" to investigate "what happened on Wall Street." The next week, the Senate invoked Pecora's name in voting to create an independent committee to investigate the financial crisis, and in January 2010 the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission held its first hearings.

Molecular And Chemical Dissection Of Cellulose Biosynthesis In Plants, Darby M. Harris
Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences
Plant cell walls are complex structures that must not only constrain cellular turgor pressure but also allow for structural modification during the dynamic processes of cell division and anisotropic expansion. Cell walls are composed of highly glycosylated proteins and polysaccharides, including pectin, hemicellulose and cellulose. The primary cell wall polysaccharide is cellulose, a polymer composed of high molecular weight !- 1,4-glucan chains. Although cellulose is the most abundant biopolymer on Earth, there is still a lot to learn about its biosynthesis and regulation. This research began by applying a variety of analytical techniques in an attempt to understand differences in …

On-Trap Derivatization Of Short-Chain Fatty Acids, Mace Mattieson
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
It has recently been hypothesized that gastrointestinal microbiota modulate immune response by the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). There is a need for rapid, selective analytical methodology capable of trace analysis of SCFAs in complex biological matrices. Previous studies by others using multibed-sorbent traps, solid phase microextraction (SPME), and on-fiber derivatization with SPME showed that it is possible to achieve low limits of detection (LODs) for the gas chromatographic (GC) headspace analysis of SCFAs. The goal of this project was to achieve on-trap derivatization of SCFAs by incorporating a derivatizing agent onto a sorbent trap. Preconcentration and derivatization of …

Abandoned Love: The Impact Of Wyatt V. Stickney On The Intersection Between International Human Rights And Domestic Mental Disability Law, Michael L. Perlin
Articles & Chapters
Wyatt v. Stickney - the first case to find (40 years ago) a constitutional right to treatment for persons institutionalized because of mental disability - is the most important institutional rights case litigated in the history of domestic mental disability law. It spawned “copycat” litigation in multiple federal district courts and state superior courts, led directly to the creation of “Patients’ Bills of Rights” in most states, and inspired the creation of the Developmental Disabilities Assistance and Bill of Rights Act, the Mental Health Systems Act Bill of Rights, and the federally-funded Protection and Advocacy System. Its direct influence on …
