Since soil-borne bacteria represent the world's greatest source of biological diversity, the diversity of culturable bacteria associated with soil from three different regions of the Anchorage Island on the Antarctic Peninsula was investigated. Soil samples analysed included Sandy coarse soil (AI1), Black & fine soil (AI2) and High nutrient (AI3). A total of 196 bacteria were isolated under aerobic conditions at 4°C using Nutrient agar as medium. The isolates were grouped using morphology and amplified rRNA gene restriction analysis fingerprinting and identified by partial sequencing of 16S rRNA gene. Livestock farming contributes the production of food at the expense of environmental degradation on air, water and soil/land. The qualitative study, an initial environmental review (IER) was conducted to identify overall farm operation and management practice via various environmental aspects and associated impacts. The study has identified activities in selected farms with significant impacts on environment are transportation, resource consumption, manure and wastewater management. Dairy products containing probiotics (e.g. Lactobacillus ssp. and Bifidobacterium) and certain herbs have inhibitory effects on the growth of Helicobacter pylori. The objectives of the present study were to determine the effects of herbs traditionally used for the treatment of gastric ulcer on yogurt fermentation characteristics, probiotic bacteria and the growth of H. pylori in vitro. Giant freshwater prawn farming is startlingly increasing in Malaysia, yet little is known about the patterns of genetic diversity of its domesticated and wild stocks. Making use of populations with different gene resources is a way to increase genetic diversity of Macrobrachium rosenbergii in Malaysia. Availability of microsatellite markers (‘western’ form) which are highly polymorphic enables the divergence study of this species to be conducted for genetic improvement. This project successfully identified potential base populations for a genetic improvement program. Four Ganoderic acids (á, B, C1 H) were studied using molecular docking approach. Both reverse molecular docking and molecular docking were combined to elucidate suitable target(s) for these Ganoderic acids. Outcomes from molecular docking were compared and correlated to experimental data. Compound with the best performance in both molecular docking and correlation analysis were further studied by looking at its molecular interaction with potential target. 1HVR (a type of HIV-1 protease) and Ganoderic acid B performed better in cluster analysis of molecular docking compared to other compounds. In this study, antioxidants extracted, using methanol and dichloromethane, from Lentinus squarrosulus (Mont.) mycelium grown on rice, maize and soya bean supplemented with nitrogen sources (malt extract, yeast extract and peptone) at various concentrations were compared with mycelium grown in liquid Glucose-Yeast-Malt-peptone (GYMP). The antioxidant capacity of the extracts were then analyzed using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging abilities and inhibition of lipid peroxidation. The total phenol content (TPC) of the extracts was also measured using the Folin–Ciocalteu method. Salinity is a major abiotic stress affecting crop productivity worldwide and results in millions of dollars in lost yield and damage to infrastructure. The purpose of this study was to identify microRNAs related to NaCl stress in Musa acuminata ssp. malaccensis (Ridl.). Sterilization techniques were employed to reduce contamination of embryos initiated from seeds. The germination rate of in vitro zygotic embryo culture was observed to increase to 92 % after soaking of the seeds in water (for periods of 2 or 3 days) compared to 72 % germination when no water treatment was used. Actinobacteria are well known for their production of an extensive array of chemically diverse and medically important secondary metabolites. Fifty two strains of actinobacteria used in this study were divided into 20 colour groups based on their aerial and substrate mycelium colour as well as diffusible pigment production on Yeast Extract Malt Extract (ISP) medium. Antifungal activity was determined against Candida albicans, Candida parapsilosis, Fusarium oxysporum, Ganoderma boninense, Schizosaccharomyces pombe and Saccharomyces cerevisiae by the agar plug-diffusion method. The genome of Streptococcus pneumoniae harbours at least eight putative toxinantitoxin (TA) loci. Two of these TA loci, pezAT and yefM-yoeBSpn, have previously been shown to be functional and the regulation mechanism of both TA loci was investigated in this study. Like most TA loci investigated, both the pezAT and yefMyoeBSpn loci were co-transcribed from σ70-type promoters. Transcriptional fusion assays demonstrated that the PezA and YefMSpn antitoxins served as repressors whereas their respective cognate toxins, PezT and YoeBSpn, served as co-repressors to further repress the activities of their promoters. The genus Pleurotus comprises some of the most popular edible mushrooms due to their favourable organoleptic and medicinal properties, vigorous growth and undemanding cultivation conditions. Pleurotus species contain a variety of secondary metabolites including various phenolic compounds which have been said to act as excellent antioxidants and possess antidiabetic activity. The aim of this study was to develop a national database on the prevalence, severity of malocclusion and orthodontic treatment needs among Yemeni adolescents. Other variables included were geographical zones, gender and urban-rural locations. A multi-stage stratified random sample of 2400 subjects from 60 schools with equal proportion of male and female were selected from nine governorates covering the whole topography of Yemen (coastal, plateau, mountains, desert and islands). Studies were conducted to investigate the effects of plant growth regulators on okra growth, yield and quality development using different techniques of application in a commercial vegetable field in Banting, Selangor, Malaysia. The experimental design employed on the commercial field was a randomized complete block design (RCBD). The different growth hormones were applied directly, internally, to the selected parts of the okra plant. The primary role of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) gene is to regulate immune cells. Dysregulation and, in particular, overproduction of this gene has been found to increase susceptibility to a variety of human diseases such as cancer. This study was done to determine the inhibitory activity that were exhibited by different parts of the local plants in Malaysia selected from the 4 families which are Leguminosae, Rubiaceae, Apocynaceae and Euphorbiaceae. The screening method used in this study are Bradford Assay and Trypsin Inhibitory Assay. Both these assays revealed that Senna surattensis leaves showed the highest inhibitory activity of 83 % compared to other 41 plant samples studied in this study. The aim of the present study is to investigate the biological activities of two selected wild Alpinia species namely, Alpinia pahangensis Ridl. and Alpinia mutica Roxb. Extraction of the rhizomes and leaves was done successively using three solvents with different polarity: hexane, dichloromethane and methanol. The crude extracts were tested for their antimicrobial and antioxidant activities. The antioxidant activity was determined using the DPPH free radical scavenging method.
