Chapters begin at a starting point of research to identify and describe girls, followed by program development emanating from data, to implementation guided by ongoing monitoring and evaluation.
Enhancing The Benefits Of Girls' Livelihood Initiatives, Sajeda Amin
Enhancing The Benefits Of Girls' Livelihood Initiatives, Sajeda Amin
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
As a pioneer in the relatively young field of adolescent livelihood programs, the Population Council has implemented and evaluated a range of projects that test vocational training, savings, financial education, and credit initiatives. Since the 1990s, the Council has documented the importance of adolescents’ livelihoods and worked to adapt adult livelihood models to fit adolescents’ unique needs. While these programs often share common strategies and elements, all Council adolescent initiatives recognize the need to learn from and adapt to the local context. Promoting Healthy, Safe, and Productive Transitions to Adulthood Brief No. 17 reviews the Council’s work on adolescent livelihoods …
Calling Attention To Young Adolescents: Building The Evidence Base To Inform Policies And Programs, Martha Brady
Calling Attention To Young Adolescents: Building The Evidence Base To Inform Policies And Programs, Martha Brady
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
Young adolescence is a critical life-cycle stage marked by a dynamic combination of opportunity and risk. During this time, children undergo tremendous physical, emotional, social, and cognitive changes as well as socialization into prevailing sexual and gender norms. For the majority, young adolescence is characterized by relatively good health and stable family circumstances, but it can also be a period of vulnerability due to a number of rapid transitions that force some young people into adult roles. Most young adolescents experience the onset of puberty (girls earlier than boys), which typically marks an abrupt life change. Some young adolescents will …

A Systematic Review Of The Literature On The Effects Of School Bullying From The Framework Of Jurgen Habermas’S Theory Of Communicative Action, Gabriel Cohen
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This project is a systematic review of the US quantitative, empirical studies on the effects of school bullying for the purpose of determining the degree to which Jurgen Habermas’s social theory, the theory of communicative action, can be used to understand the constellation of measured effects. School bullying is defined as a systematic abuse of power: the empirical literature on school bullying, therefore, provides a large data set on the abuse of power. The review finds strong consistency between the theory and the results of selected studies suggesting that Habermas’s theory of communicative action can explain and predict the mechanisms …

Turkish Journal of Biology
Lipases (triacylglycerol hydrolases) are hydrolytic enzymes that can catalyze the hydrolysis of the ester bond of long-chain acylglycerols at the oil-water interface. The present study investigated the effects of inducers, surface-active materials, activators, and inhibitors in the fermentation medium on lipase activity in Rhizopus delemar. In the presence of certain commercial oils and tributyrin as an inducer, lipase activity decreased in the order of sunflower oil > soybean oil > hazelnut oil > corn oil > tributyrin > olive oil. In addition, the effects of the stirring and aeration rates on lipase activity were investigated. To investigate the effect of surface-active materials on lipase activity …

The Colorado Potato Beetle (CPB), Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say) (Col.: Chrysomelidae), is a pre-eminent pest on solanaceous crops worldwide, and much research has focused on the different components of its variable population dynamics. L. decemlineata has developed resistance to insecticides used for its control. Consequently, alternative methods are needed urgently for the control of this pest. In this study, in order to find a more effective and safer biological control agent against L. decemlineata, we isolated a new bacterial isolate (Ld4) from L. decemlineata, and tested it for insecticidal effects on L. decemlineata larvae. Also, the insecticidal effect of Ld4 was …

Levels Of Phenolic Compounds And Their Effects On Antioxidant Capacity Of Wild Vaccinium Arctostaphylos L. (Qare-Qat) Collected From Different Regions Of Iran, Tahereh Hasanloo, Roshanak Sepehrifar, Homa Hajimehdipoor
Turkish Journal of Biology
Antioxidant activities in the leaves and fruits of wild Vaccinium arctostaphylos (locally named Qare-Qat) from different regions of Iran were evaluated using the stable 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl free radical and ferric reducing/antioxidant power methods. Variations in antioxidant activity, total phenolic, anthocyanin, and flavonoid content in fruit samples among genotypes was much greater than the variation observed between growing seasons, indicating that genetics plays a more important role than growing season in V. arctostaphylos fruits. The data indicated that the fruits of the Kelardasht genotype had the highest total phenolic content [42.73 ± 1.5 mg gallic acid equivalents (GAE) g^{-1} DW], anthocyanin …

Changes In The Hemolymph Total Protein Of Galleria Mellonella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) After Parasitism And Envenomation By Pimpla Turionellae (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae), Olga Sak, Ekrem Ergi̇n, Fevzi̇ Uçkan, David B. Rivers, Ayli̇n Er
Turkish Journal of Biology
Venom from the endoparasitoid Pimpla turionellae L. (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) contains a mixture of biologically active components, which display potent paralytic, cytotoxic, and cytolytic effects towards hosts. Here, we further investigate if parasitism or envenomation by P. turionellae alters total protein of its host Galleria mellonella L. (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae). Various venom concentrations representing doses previously determined to yield host responses yet fall below the calculated LD99 were used for pupae and larvae. Parasitization was only assayed for host pupa since P. turionellae females normally parasitize host prepupae and pupae in nature. Hemolymph total protein concentration remained relatively steady at all doses …

We analyzed the effects of sodium hypochlorite and Plant Preservative Mixture (PPM) on surface sterilization. We also examined the effects that the addition of an antibiotic-antimycotic solution to the culture medium had on callus induction. Explants were initially sterilized with different concentrations of sodium hypochlorite and cultured on MS media containing kinetin (0.29 \muM) and naphthalene acetic acid (NAA, 10 \muM). No calluses were produced, either because of contamination of the explants, or loss of explants as a result of the high levels of sodium hypochlorite. The application of PPM and antibiotics at different concentrations reduced contamination and led to …
