Effect Of Atmospheric Co2 Levels On Nutrients In Cheatgrass Tissue, Robert R. Blank, Tye Morgan, Lewis H. Ziska, Robert H. White Jan 2011

Effect Of Atmospheric Co2 Levels On Nutrients In Cheatgrass Tissue, Robert R. Blank, Tye Morgan, Lewis H. Ziska, Robert H. White

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues

Rising atmospheric CO2 has resulted in declining tissue nutrient concentrations and leaf biochemicals, which has potential ramifications for animal nutrition, herbivory and litter decomposition rates. We investigated the interacting effects of atmospheric CO2 concentrations (270, 320, 370, and 420 ppmv), plant age (42, 57, 75, and 87 days), and elevation ecotype (salt desert, sagebrush steppe, and mountain brush) on aboveground tissue nutrient levels and biochemistry of cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum), an important range grass in the Great Basin. Most nutrients were affected by significant (P < 0.05) interactions between CO2 level and plant age, and plant ecotype and plant age. At 87 days growth, tissue C:N ratios increased significantly and concentrations of P, K, and Mg declined, with rising CO2 levels suggesting declining forage nutrition. Tissue concentrations of Mn, K, Mg, and Ca increased with plant age and, in general, the low elevation ecotype had greater tissue nutrient concentrations than the high elevation ecotype. Hemicellulose concentration was influenced by a significant CO2 level by ecotype interaction; overall, the high elevation ecotype had greater concentrations of hemicellulose, which increased with increasing CO2 levels. The high elevation ecotype had significantly less acid detergent fiber than the low or mid elevation ecotypes. These data suggest that increasing atmospheric CO2 levels may have a profound effect on the nutritional value of cheatgrass forage, and this effect may differ among elevational ecotypes.

Influence Of Plant Invasion On Seed Chemistry Of Winterfat, Green Rabbitbrush, Freckled Milkvetch, Indian Ricegrass And Cheatgrass, Robert R. Blank, Tye Morgan, Fay Allen Jan 2011

Influence Of Plant Invasion On Seed Chemistry Of Winterfat, Green Rabbitbrush, Freckled Milkvetch, Indian Ricegrass And Cheatgrass, Robert R. Blank, Tye Morgan, Fay Allen

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues

Plant invasions have proven detrimental to numerous ecosystem processes; however, limited information exists on how plant invasions affect seed nutrients. We quantified nutrients in seeds of Indian ricegrass (Achnatherum hymenoides), green rabbitbrush (Chrysothamnus viscidiflorus), winterfat (Krascheninnikovia lanata), freckled milkvetch (Astragalus lentiginosus), and cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum) in sites invaded about 10 years by cheatgrass and in nearby sites with only widely scattered plants of cheatgrass. Seed chemistry differed significantly among the species tested. Overall, seeds of shrubs and freckled milkvetch had greater concentrations of N, P, and K, and lower C:N ratios than the grass species. On areas invaded by cheatgrass …

Morphological And Physiological Traits Account For Similar Nitrate Uptake By Crested Wheatgrass And Cheatgrass, A. Joshua Leffler, Thomas A. Monaco, Jeremy J. James Jan 2011

Morphological And Physiological Traits Account For Similar Nitrate Uptake By Crested Wheatgrass And Cheatgrass, A. Joshua Leffler, Thomas A. Monaco, Jeremy J. James

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues

Millions of hectares throughout the Intermountain West are either dominated or threatened by the invasive annual grass Bromus tectorum (cheatgrass). This invasion is largely linked to disturbance and few regions appear immune. Disturbance liberates resources in a community and cheatgrass appears exceptionally able to capitalize on these resources. One species, however, is consistently competitive with cheatgrass. Agropyron cristatum (crested wheatgrass), an improved plant material developed from several populations in central Asia, is drought resistant, grazing tolerant, and largely excludes cheatgrass in stands established within the Great Basin. While previous studies document high resource uptake ability by crested wheatgrass, it remains …

Estimating Historical Sage-Grouse Habitat Abundance Using A State-And-Transition Model, Louisa Evers, Richard F. Miller, Miles Hemstrom, James Merzenich, Ronald Neilson, Paul Doescher

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues

Use of reference conditions to compare current conditions what managers believed represented healthy and functioning systems has become a common approach to evaluate vegetation and habitat conditions and aid development of land management plans. Often reference conditions attempt to describe landscapes as they existed and functioned prior to about 1850, and often largely rely on expert opinion. We developed reference conditions for sagebrush (Artemisia spp. L.) ecosystems in eastern Oregon based on ecological site descriptions, soil surveys, climate data, wildfire records, expert opinion, and literature using a state-and-transition (STM) modeling framework. Using ecological site descriptions for the Malheur High Plateau …

Trend Of Gardner Saltbush And Halogeton In The Lower Green River Basin, Wyoming, Sherel Goodrich, Aaron Zobell

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues

Displacement of Gardner saltbush (Atriplex gardneri) by halogeton (Halogeton glomeratus) is being recorded at several points in the Lower Green River Basin, Wyoming by line intercept measurements and by repeat photography. This paper gives results of the monitoring studies as of 2009. Total displacement of Gardner saltbush by halogeton has taken as little as 10 years at some locations. Loss of Gardner saltbush to halogeton has major management implications.

Book Review: Gourmets In The Land Of Famine, Emily Hill Jan 2011

Book Review: Gourmets In The Land Of Famine, Emily Hill

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

Why is “eating in Canton” (shi zai Guangzhou) known as the best in China? Seung-joon Lee’s lively and original study examines the peculiarities and politics of eating in Canton (Guangzhou) from Qing times to 1937. Using a delectable range of materials in Chinese, Japanese, and English, the book offers an illuminating entrée to the culture and political correctness of eating in modern Chinese history. As the author points out, few historical studies focus on food supplies. Many narrative histories of China, for instance, include sections on the Canton-based events of the 1920s when the Guomindang and the Chinese …

Nutrient Composition Of Spoiled And Non-Spoiled Wet Byproducts Mixed And Stored With Straw, Jennifer R. Yelden, Crystal D. Buckner, Kelsey M. Rolfe Rolfe, Dana I. Christensen, Terry Klopfenstein, Galen Erickson Jan 2011

Nutrient Composition Of Spoiled And Non-Spoiled Wet Byproducts Mixed And Stored With Straw, Jennifer R. Yelden, Crystal D. Buckner, Kelsey M. Rolfe Rolfe, Dana I. Christensen, Terry Klopfenstein, Galen Erickson

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Wet corn byproducts were mixed with straw and stored in 55 gallon barrels for 56 days to simulate bunker storage. The spoilage process caused a decrease in fat content and an increase in pH, NDF, ash, and CP. Covering with plastic or distillers solubles reduced the amount of spoilage and the change in nutrient composition.

Studies Of The Kinetics Of Cell Cycle Processes In S. Cerevisiae: The Molecular Basis Of Start Irreversibility And Cyclin-Cdk Ordering Of Mitotic Events, Catherine Oikonomou Jan 2011

Studies Of The Kinetics Of Cell Cycle Processes In S. Cerevisiae: The Molecular Basis Of Start Irreversibility And Cyclin-Cdk Ordering Of Mitotic Events, Catherine Oikonomou

Student Theses and Dissertations

The cell cycle machinery of Saccharomyces cerevisiae consists of a central negative feedback oscillator comprising cyclin-CDK and its antagonist, APCCdc20. This oscillator is stabilized and tuned by positive feedback loops, and its frequency is modulated by checkpoint controls. Either by directly triggering events, or by entraining independent oscillators controlling events, the cyclin-CDK oscillator regulates the key events of the cell cycle. These events have an established order and timing within the overall cycle. The work I describe in this thesis concerns two fundamental questions: how is the order and timing of cell cycle events controlled, and what sets the intrinsic …

From Microarrays To Behavior: Genes Controlled By Feeding State In Mosquitoes And Flies, Shelli F. Farhadian Jan 2011

From Microarrays To Behavior: Genes Controlled By Feeding State In Mosquitoes And Flies, Shelli F. Farhadian

Student Theses and Dissertations

Across many species, animals carefully regulate their food intake according to their energy needs. They are able to do so through the ability to sense hunger or satiety cues. In vertebrates, these signals are released by the gastrointestinal tract and by adipose tissue, and reach feeding centers in the brain, where they stimulate the release of peptides that modulate feeding behavior (Benarroch, 2010; Berthoud, 2008). Although many of these neuronal populations have been identified in rodent models, the neural circuitry behind behavioral modification of food intake remains largely unknown. Insects like the blowfly and the locust have classically been used …
