Teachers And Their Struggle With Personal Satisfaction As Young Mothers, Katherine Homer Jan 2011

Teachers And Their Struggle With Personal Satisfaction As Young Mothers, Katherine Homer

Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to explore how the day-to-day experiences of teachers who are working mothers of young children shape their level of comfort and satisfaction with the dual role they live. This investigation also explored the dynamics of teacher retention by understanding the dilemmas female teachers with young families encounter. There is limited literature on working mothers who are high school teachers. There are many different issues this study examined to gain a better understanding of the complexities of the lives of women who are high school teachers while raising young children.

This study consisted of six …

The Effects Of Maternal Separation On Alcohol Responses In Adult Mice, Rachel Beckstrom Jan 2011

The Effects Of Maternal Separation On Alcohol Responses In Adult Mice, Rachel Beckstrom

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Early environmental stressors may play an important role in the development of alcohol abuse and alcoholism in humans. An animal model of early environmental disturbance, termed maternal separation (MS), has been shown to affect alcohol self-administration in adult animals with short periods of daily separation (e.g., 15 min) resulting in lower alcohol intake in adulthood than longer periods of separation (e.g., 180 or 360 min). The current research investigated the possibility that differences in adult alcohol intake following MS may be due, in part, to alterations in alcohol responses independently from the alcohol's reinforcing properties. In particular, the effects of …

Identification Of Proteins That Interact With The Transcription Factor Emx2 In Developing Mouse Neocortex, Jennifer A. Groves Jan 2011

Identification Of Proteins That Interact With The Transcription Factor Emx2 In Developing Mouse Neocortex, Jennifer A. Groves

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Neocortex is the largest region of the cerebral cortex in the mammalian brain. It is composed of multiple functional areas that process discrete types of information including visual, somatosensory, and auditory input and motor control output. During embryonic development, the relative size of each area is determined by transcription factors such as EMx2. The goal of our work is to identify proteins that interact with Emx2 to influence its role in neocortical arealization, the process by which the specific areas of the neocortex are formed with discrete boundaries.

Effects Of Fatty Acids And Bexarotene On Breast Cancer Cell Progression, Jessica Trappmann Jan 2011

Effects Of Fatty Acids And Bexarotene On Breast Cancer Cell Progression, Jessica Trappmann

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Breast cancer cell growth can be inhibited in vivo by retinoid X receptor (RXR) specific retinoids. In both animal and cell culture studies, omega-3 fatty acids share growth regulatory effects similar to those ofRXR specific retinoids (rexinoids). One synthetic rexinoid, bexarotene (LCD 1069, Targretin), is used clinically to treat cancer patients. Of concern is that some patients are unable to tolerate high doses of such treatment drugs. We hypothesized that n-3 fatty acids and bexarotene may work synergistically to slow breast cancer cell growth. To test our hypothesis, we used an in vitro cell culture model, MCF-7, a human breast …

A Secure Behavior Modification Sensor System For Physical Activity Improvement, Alan Price Jan 2011

A Secure Behavior Modification Sensor System For Physical Activity Improvement, Alan Price

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Today, advances in wireless sensor networks are making it possible to capture large amounts of information about a person and their interaction within their home environment. However, what is missing is how to ensure the security of the collected data and its use to alter human behavior for positive benefit.

In this research, exploration was conducted involving the "infrastructure" and "intelligence" aspects of a wireless sensor network through a Behavior Modification Sensor System. First was to understand how a secure wireless sensor network could be established through the symmetric distribution of keys (the securing of the infrastructure), and it involves …

Smoke Signals: An Investigation Of The Effects Of Eco-Stoves On Community And The Environment, Claire Hennigan, Amy Rogers

VA Engage Journal

The use of solid biomass fuels and the implementation of eco-stoves to mitigate its harmful effects has become a popular topic in discussions on global development. An article published on use of traditional fuels in The New Yorker reports, “A map of the world's poor is easy to make…just follow the smoke.” Eco-stoves are now being constructed in impoverished communities around the world as an alternative to traditional stove models as a means to improve health and overall quality of life. Global Brigades, a sustainable development NGO, has been working in communities in rural Honduras to construct an eco-stove model …

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Fuzzy logic provides a methodology to represent, manipulate, and implement heuristic knowledge to control a system. In this work, the development of a fuzzy irrigation control system based on a field programmable gate array (FPGA) to control greenhouse fertigation was presented. Factors involved in crop nutrition were discussed first. Further, the description of the fuzzy control system was presented, followed by the analysis and design of the fuzzy controller, and its implementation, a FPGA-integrated circuit. The FPGA system is not only flexible (it can be easily reconfigured and reused for different designs), but it also provides rapid prototyping and offers …

The Effect Of Nitrogen Soil Concentration On Leaf Fluorescence In Zea Mays, Ashton Garbutt, Daniel Rossie, Anup Solsi Jan 2011

The Effect Of Nitrogen Soil Concentration On Leaf Fluorescence In Zea Mays, Ashton Garbutt, Daniel Rossie, Anup Solsi

Featured Research

Macronutrients in the soil are essential to the growth and development of a plant. One of the most important nutrients to a plants growth is nitrogen. Nitrogen has been directly correlated to photosynthetic output in various studies and this relationship is the subject of this experiment. Since nitrogen has an effect on photosynthetic rate, there should be a correlation between nitrogen and fluorescence – a form of energy dissipation. This study attempted to show that nitrogen concentration in the soil is inversely proportional to fluorescence of the plant because the more nitrogen in the soil, the more energy should be …

Women, Vulnerability, And Humanitarian Emergencies, Fionnuala Ni Aolain Jan 2011

Women, Vulnerability, And Humanitarian Emergencies, Fionnuala Ni Aolain

Michigan Journal of Gender & Law

The catastrophic dimensions of humanitarian emergencies are increasingly understood and more visible to states and international institutions. There is greater appreciation for the social, economic and political effects that follow in the short to long term from the devastating consequences of humanitarian emergencies. There is also recognition of the gendered dimensions of humanitarian emergencies in policy and institutional contexts. It is generally acknowledged that women are overrepresented in the refugee and internally displaced communities that typically result from many humanitarian crises. Women bear acute care responsibilities in most societies and also disproportionately bear familial and communal care responsibilities in communities …

Objective Physical Activity And Sleep Characteristic Measurements Using A Triaxial Accelerometer In Eight Year Olds, Susan Ann Harrington Jan 2011

Objective Physical Activity And Sleep Characteristic Measurements Using A Triaxial Accelerometer In Eight Year Olds, Susan Ann Harrington

Wayne State University Dissertations

Background: Secular trends demonstrate that young children are less active and sleep less. Inequity in an individual's energy balance is known to have poor health outcomes. Academic achievement, academic behavior, and weight status are proxy indicators for health and psychosocial outcomes in this study. Current guidelines in place for sleep and physical activity in childhood are the result of data collected in the form of self-reports. Quantification and qualification of physical activity dimensions and sleep characteristics are essential not only for the purpose of clearly establishing parameters but also for the intent of verifying optimal health outcomes and evaluating interventions …

Social Support And Health Outcomes In Adolescents Experiencing Homelessness And Poverty: A Test Of The Main Effect And Stress-Buffering Hypotheses, Danijela Zlatevski Jan 2011

Social Support And Health Outcomes In Adolescents Experiencing Homelessness And Poverty: A Test Of The Main Effect And Stress-Buffering Hypotheses, Danijela Zlatevski

Wayne State University Dissertations

The health benefit and stress-buffering effects of social support were examined. Homeless (N=250) and housed (N=148) adolescents were assessed in adolescence and again in early adulthood, providing longitudinal data to help understand how these social constructs may change and influence health. The study was designed to test Cohen and Wills (1985) main effect and stress-buffering hypotheses. Current findings provide some support for the main effect hypothesis and some more limited support for the stress-buffering effect of perceived social support on mental health. Specifically, a main effect was found at baseline for network social support on number of substance abuse symptoms. …

The Effects Of Racially-Motivated Emotional Arousal On The Eating Behaviors Of African American Women, Lenwood W. Hayman Jan 2011

The Effects Of Racially-Motivated Emotional Arousal On The Eating Behaviors Of African American Women, Lenwood W. Hayman

Wayne State University Dissertations

Disparities between African Americans and Caucasians remain vast across a wide variety of health indicators. Chronic stress has been identified as a risk factor for a variety of chronic illnesses and poor health outcomes. One type of chronic stress that has been linked to health disparities is the stress associated with experiences of racial discrimination. The stress African Americans encounter as a result of their racist experiences contributes to a chronic elevation of their physiological stress response. In addition to stress, a major risk factor for coronary heart disease and diabetes is obesity, which has been established as a major …

Effect Of Dimethylarginine Dimethylaminohydrolase In The Development Of Salt Sensitivity, Samar Abdulla Nasser Jan 2011

Effect Of Dimethylarginine Dimethylaminohydrolase In The Development Of Salt Sensitivity, Samar Abdulla Nasser

Wayne State University Dissertations

Salt sensitivity is associated with a rise in blood pressure (BP) occurring during sodium loading and/or a fall in BP during sodium restriction that exceeds random fluctuations in BP. Salt sensitivity is more common in African American than Caucasian hypertensives and is also present, in normotensive African Americans. The mechanism or mechanisms resulting in salt-sensitive hypertension are multiple and include both activation of the renin angiotensin system via increases in angiotensin II and reductions in the endogenous vasodilator, nitric oxide (NO). An important means of NO downregulation is through asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), an endogenous NO inhibitor, which is largely metabolized …

In Response To Need, A History Of The Western Australian Department Of Agriculture - 1894 To 2008, E N. Fitzpatrick

Books & book chapters

The department was not always such a significant organisation; it came from very small beginnings. However, it has been a major component of the engine which has produced an agricultural industry in a Mediterranean climate zone which is superior to all others operating in this zone. This book is a summary of its work. There are many more fascinating chapters to be recorded of work on specific issues of development, investigation or conservation. I hope they will be written by someone one day. With this in mind the department has decided to put the book on a web page where …
