Bedside Method To Estimate Actual Body Weight In The Emergency Department, Robert G. Buckley, Christine R. Stehman, Frank L. Dos Santos, Robert H. Riggenburgh, Aaron Swenson, Nathan Mjos, Matt Brewer, Sheila Mulligan

United States Navy: Publications

Background:

Actual body weight (ABW) is important for accurate drug dosing in emergency settings. Oftentimes, patients are unable to stand to be weighed accurately or clearly state their most recent weight.

Objective:

Develop a bedside method to estimate ABW using simple anthropometric measurements.

Methods:

Prospective, blinded, cross-sectional convenience sampling of adult Emergency Department (ED) patients. A multiple linear regression equation from Derivation Phase (n = 208: 121 males, 87 females) found abdominal and thigh circumferences (AC and TC) had the best fit and an inter-rater correlation of 0.99 and 0.96, respectively: Male ABW (kg) = -47.8 + 0.78 * (AC) …

Validation Of The Infant-Toddler Home Inventory Among Households In Low Income Communities At The Kenyan Coast, Penny Holding, Amina Abubakar, Elizabeth Obiero, Fons J. R. Van De Vijver

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

The aim of this paper is to describe the adaptations made to the Infant-Toddler version of the Home Observation Measure of the Environment for use in a low income Kenyan population. A total of 425 (214 girls) children aged 6-35 months were involved in this cross-sectional study. Focus groups and in-depth individual interviews were used to generate culturally appropriate modifications. Translations and back translations of the HOME were carried out using a Panel Approach. A significant number of items from the original HOME (N = 26) showed limited variability and were excluded from the final schedule. Two more items were …

Development And Evaluation Of An Integrated Simulation Model For Assessing Smallholder Crop-Livestock Production In Yucatán, Mexico, David Parsons, Charles F. Nicholson, Robert W. Blake, Quirine M. Ketterings, Luis Ramírez-Aviles, Danny G. Fox, Luis O. Tedeschi, Jerome H. Cherney

Agribusiness

Mixed farming systems constitute a large proportion of agricultural production in the tropics, and provide multiple benefits for the world’s poor. However, our understanding of the functioning of these systems is limited. Modeling offers the best approach to quantify outcomes from many interacting causal variables in these systems. The objective of this study was to develop an integrated crop–livestock model to assess biophysical and economic consequences of farming practices exhibited in sheep systems of Yucatán state, Mexico. A Vensim™ dynamic stock-flow feedback model was developed to integrate scientific and practical knowledge of management, flock dynamics, sheep production, partitioning of nutrients, …

Faculty Publications

Berries of Vaccinium spp. have long been an important source of food and pharmaceutical ingredients and are considered to have high antioxidant potential. Growing blueberries in Texas, United States is a substantial industry, but there is no report on their antioxidant capacity, total phenolics, and anthocyanins. This study evaluates antioxidant capacity and contents of total phenolics and anthocayanins in both fruits and leaves of 19 genotypes including five commercial cultivars and 11 selections of rabbiteye blueberry (V. ashei) and southern highbush (V. corymbosum hybrids), and three native species (V. darrowii, V. arboreum, and V. fuscatum) grown in Nacogdoches, Texas. Biological Sciences Faculty and Staff Research

• Premise of the study : The clusioid clade includes five families (i.e., Bonnetiaceae, Calophyllaceae, Clusiaceae s.s., Hypericaceae, and Podostemaceae) represented by 94 genera and ~1900 species. Species in this clade form a conspicuous element of tropical forests worldwide and are important in horticulture, timber production, and pharmacology. We conducted a taxon-rich multigene phylogenetic analysis of the clusioids to clarify phylogenetic relationships in this clade. • Methods : We analyzed plastid ( matK , ndhF , and rbcL ) and mitochondrial ( matR ) nucleotide sequence data using parsimony, maximum likelihood, and Bayesian inference. Our combined data set included 194 …

Her Choice, Her Problem: How Having A Choice Can Diminish Family Solidarity, Richard Stith Jan 2011

Her Choice, Her Problem: How Having A Choice Can Diminish Family Solidarity, Richard Stith

Law Faculty Publications

This Article explores a little-noticed dimension of abortion and assisted suicide (or voluntary euthanasia): how choosing to reject those options can have a negative impact on the legally authorized choosers. Women who refuse abortion may be blamed for their choice by boyfriends, neighbors, employers, and others. Similarly, infirm or dying persons may find family and other caregivers upset by their refusal to agree to assisted suicide when voluntary death seems the sensible option. Finally, the author questions whether a life chosen as an option can ever have the dignity of a life simply accepted, i.e., whether the child a mother …

Evaluation Of Introduced Parasitoids Against Bactrocera Invadens And Their Interaction With Bactrocera Invadens Natural Enemies, Ernest Felix Appiah Jan 2011

Evaluation Of Introduced Parasitoids Against Bactrocera Invadens And Their Interaction With Bactrocera Invadens Natural Enemies, Ernest Felix Appiah

All PhD Dissertations

The invasive fruit fly Bactrocera invadens (Drew, Tsurata & White 2005) is causing extensive socio-economic losses in West Africa as a pest in mango production. In addition to reducing crop quality and decreasing fruit production, the presence of the fruit fly has detrimental impact on the export market due to international trade restrictions. To manage the damage being caused by B.invadens to the mango industry in Africa, an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategy with biological control as one of its components was initiated by the African Fruit Fly Programme (AFFP) based at ICIPE. To this end, Fopius arisanus (Sonan) and …

The Economic Impact Of Group Based Ipm Training On Smallholder Horticultural Production In Kenya, Nigat Bekele Abebe Jan 2011

The Economic Impact Of Group Based Ipm Training On Smallholder Horticultural Production In Kenya, Nigat Bekele Abebe

All PhD Dissertations

The horticultural sub-sector in Kenya is a key source of foreign exchange earnings, employment creation and also plays a major role in ensuring food security to many Kenyan households. However, the sector faces serious growth constraints including pests and diseases that are limiting its potential to improve horticultural productivity and livelihoods. In a bid to address these constraints and improve productivity, different extension training approaches, have been implemented in an effort to address the sub-sector challenges. Previously, heavily donor funded approaches were used but were found to be ineffective and financially unsustainable. In realization of these limitations, the Government of …

Ecological And Physiological Adaptations Of Malaria Vectors In A Semi-Arid Area In Baringo District, Kenya, Albert O. Mala Jan 2011

Ecological And Physiological Adaptations Of Malaria Vectors In A Semi-Arid Area In Baringo District, Kenya, Albert O. Mala

All PhD Dissertations

Longitudinal entomological sampling was executed to study physiological and ecological adaptations of malaria vectors at two semi-arid villages (Kamarimar and Tirion) in Kenya. Adult mosquitoes were sampled using CDC light traps and pyrethrum spray catch collections. Mosquito larvae were sampled using standard dipping methods. Parity rates, length of gonotophic cycle duration and insemination rates of female mosquitoes were assessed. Host choice and sporozoite rates were determined by ELISAs. Sub-species of the Anopheles gambiae complex were identified by PCR. Out of 16,683 mosquitoes collected in both villages An. gambiae si was most predominant followed by An. pharoensis , An. funestus and …
