Development Of An Internet Based System For Modeling Biotin Metabolism Using Bayesian Networks, Jinglei Zhou, Dong Wang, Vicki L. Schlegel, Janos Zempleni

Department of Statistics: Faculty Publications

Biotin is an essential water-soluble vitamin crucial for maintaining normal body functions. The importance of biotin for human health has been under-appreciated but there is plenty of opportunity for future research with great importance for human health. Currently, carrying out predictions of biotin metabolism involves tedious manual manipulations. In this paper, we report the development of BiotinNet, an internet based program that uses Bayesian networks to integrate published data on various aspects of biotin metabolism. Users can provide a combination of values on the levels of biotin related metabolites to obtain the predictions on other metabolites that are not specified. …

Meeting Of The Minds: Perceptions Of And Experiences With School-Based Mental Health Services, Jill Priest Amati

Anthropology - Dissertations

The purpose of this research is to understand the meanings and perceptions that families, teachers, and school-based service providers on the Westside in Syracuse, New York ascribe to school-based mental health services. The Westside is an economically disadvantaged and under-resourced neighborhood where children experience a great deal of stress in everyday life. Many children in need of mental health care are referred to school-based mental health service providers by their teachers. The primary motivation of this research is to understand how parents and school staff give meaning to the school-based mental health services and how these meanings affect whether they …

Talking With Faculty About Cognitive Science And Learning, John Girash Jan 2011

Talking With Faculty About Cognitive Science And Learning, John Girash

Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education: Archives

When it comes to teaching, faculty at a research-intensive institution can be very much like our students in relation to their studies: very smart people whose primary interests lie elsewhere or, at least, whose expertise is not in this area. And we hear over and over again the common wisdom that faculty want research-based ideas on teaching. This implies that we can treat the teaching of teachers about research-supported aspects of learning in ways analogous to teaching students about other academic topics.

In introducing research-based ideas into the pedagogical discussion, it can be tough to find a balance between concepts …

Anaerobic Respiration Of Escherichia Coli In The Mouse Intestine, Shari A. Jones, Terri Gibson, Rosalie C. Maltby, Fatema Z. Chowdhury, Valley Stewart, Paul S. Cohen, Tyrrell Conway Jan 2011

Anaerobic Respiration Of Escherichia Coli In The Mouse Intestine, Shari A. Jones, Terri Gibson, Rosalie C. Maltby, Fatema Z. Chowdhury, Valley Stewart, Paul S. Cohen, Tyrrell Conway

Cell and Molecular Biology Faculty Publications

The intestine is inhabited by a large microbial community consisting primarily of anaerobes and, to a lesser extent, facultative anaerobes, such as Escherichia coli, which we have shown requires aerobic respiration to compete successfully in the mouse intestine (S. A. Jones et al., Infect. Immun. 75:4891-4899, 2007). If facultative anaerobes efficiently lower oxygen availability in the intestine, then their sustained growth must also depend on anaerobic metabolism. In support of this idea, mutants lacking nitrate reductase or fumarate reductase have extreme colonization defects. Here, we further explore the role of anaerobic respiration in colonization using the streptomycin-treated mouse model. We …

Genotype And Phenotypes Of An Intestine-Adapted Escherichia Coli K-12 Mutant Selected By Animal Passage For Superior Colonization, Andrew J. Fabich, Mary P. Leatham, Joe E. Grissom, Graham Wiley, Hongshing Lai, Fares Najar, Bruce A. Roe, Paul S. Cohen, Tyrrell Conway

Cell and Molecular Biology Faculty Publications

We previously isolated a spontaneous mutant of Escherichia coli K-12, strain MG1655, following passage through the streptomycin-treated mouse intestine, that has colonization traits superior to the wild-type parent strain (M. P. Leatham et al., Infect. Immun. 73:8039–8049, 2005). This intestine-adapted strain (E. coli MG1655*) grew faster on several different carbon sources than the wild type and was nonmotile due to deletion of the flhD gene. We now report the results of several high-throughput genomic analysis approaches to further characterize E. coli MG1655*. Whole-genome pyrosequencing did not reveal any changes on its genome, aside from the deletion at the flhDC …

Chemical Characterization And In Vitro Fermentation Of Brassica Straw Treated With The Aerobic Fungus, Trametes Versicolor, J. E. Ramirez-Bribiesca, Y. Wang, L. Jin, Thomas Canam, J. R. Town, A. Tsang, T. J. Dumonceaux, T. A. Mcallister Jan 2011

Chemical Characterization And In Vitro Fermentation Of Brassica Straw Treated With The Aerobic Fungus, Trametes Versicolor, J. E. Ramirez-Bribiesca, Y. Wang, L. Jin, Thomas Canam, J. R. Town, A. Tsang, T. J. Dumonceaux, T. A. Mcallister

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

Brassica napus straw (BNS) was either not treated or was treated with two strains of Trametes versicolor; 52J (wild type) or m4D (a cellobiose dehydrogenase-deficient mutant) with four treatments. Glucose was provided to encourage growth of the mutant strain. All treatments with T. versicolor decreased (P<0.05) neutral-detergent fibre and increased (P<0.05) protein and the concentration of lignin degradation products in straw. Ergosterol was highest (P<0.05) in straw treated with B-52J, suggesting it generated the most fungal biomass. Insoluble lignin was reduced (P<0.05) in straw treated with B-52J and B-m4D, but not with B-m4Dg. Mannose and xylose concentration were generally higher (P<0.05) in straw treated with fungi, whereas glucose and galactose were lower as compared with C-BNS. The four treatments above were subsequently assessed in rumen in vitro fermentations, along with BNS treated with 5 N NaOH. Concentrations of total volatile fatty acids after 24 and 48h were lower (P<0.05) in incubations that contained BNS treated with T. versicolor as compared with C-BNSor NaOH-treated BNS. Compared with C-BNS, in vitrodry matter disappearance and gas production were increased (P<0.05) by NaOH, but not by treatment with either strain of T. versicolor. Although treatment with T. versicolor did release more lignin degradation products, it did not appear to provide more degradable carbohydrate to in vitro rumen microbial populations, even when a mutant strain with compromised carbohydrate metabolism was utilized. Production of secondary compounds by the aerobic fungi may inhibit rumen microbial fermentation.

ABSTRACT This qualitative study focused on the enablers and deterrents of self-care behavior among Filipino adults with Type 2 Diabetes. Purposive sampling was used to recruit participants. Open-ended interviews with diabetic patients and their primary caregivers and self-care diaries were utilized as methods of data collection. Further, review of medical records was done.A “within-case analysis”, (triangulated data from diabetic patients and caregivers) and a “cross-case analysis” (comparing triangulated data among and across all cases) were undertaken, noting a specific pattern-match. Moreover, a constant comparison method with data and review extant literature was done.Different enablers and deterrents to self-care surfaced and …

Reviewing The Effects Of Population Growth On Basic Education Development, Leodinito Y. Cañete Jan 2011

Reviewing The Effects Of Population Growth On Basic Education Development, Leodinito Y. Cañete

CNU Journal of Higher Education

The influence of population on the economy is seemingly straightforward. It is about having enough resources to meet the needs of the growing number of people. This study explored access to resources between urban and non/lessurban populations and its impact on basic education development using evidence from Cebu Province because the population and development policy of the Philippine government has not been consistent. With Cebu Province registering a 2.44 exponential annual population growth rate between 1990 and 2000, the number of school entrants is not likely to abate. The results of the study showed a disturbing gender-related phenomenon because there …

The Social Determinants Of Hiv/Aids In Cambodia: Is It Too Early To Call Micro Medical Efforts A Success?, Matthew Aaron Sherwood

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Cambodia, a least developed country (LDC) with a recent history of civil war and genocide, has been widely considered to be a success story when it comes to the fight against HIV/AIDS. Within a few years of the first HIV positive blood test in the kingdom in 1991, it quickly became the country with the highest prevalence in the region, with estimates of as many as 4% of the population being infected at one point.

In recent years, Cambodia's HIV/AIDS infection rates have plummeted to below 1%, with most of the credit being given to the implementation of micro-medical measures, …
