Objective - To examine the association between cardiorespiratory (CRF) and risk of incident prostate cancer (PrCA).
Methods - Participants were 19,042 male subjects in the Aerobics Center Longitudinal Study (ACLS), ages 20 to 82 years, who received a baseline medical examination including a maximal treadmill exercise test between 1976 and 2003. CRF levels were defined as low (lowest 20%), moderate (middle 40%), and high (upper 40%) according to age-specific distribution of treadmill duration from the overall ACLS population. PrCA was assessed from responses to mail-back health surveys during 1982 to 2004. Cox proportional hazards regression models, adjusted for potential confounders, …

Journal of Extension
The Guide for New Parents is a cross-programmatic educational resource developed to help new mothers adjust to parenting and learn about Family and Consumer Sciences Extension (FACS) programming. Approximately 8,600 new mothers were reached, and responses from a diverse and representative sample of mothers revealed that this resource was perceived as useful and promoted public awareness of FACS Extension. Future educational resources that integrate content across Extension programs for targeted audiences can be useful in building greater public awareness and utilization of the various resources available from Extension

Wage Subsidies In A Program For Economic Inclusion And Growth, Hian Teck Hoon
Wage Subsidies In A Program For Economic Inclusion And Growth, Hian Teck Hoon
Research Collection School Of Economics
This paper is in three parts. The first part discusses the workings of a wage subsidy scheme in boosting employment and earnings of workers. The second part reviews the empirical evidence on the effectiveness of wage subsidy schemes in countries that have implemented them both as countercyclical policies as well as structural programs to boost long-term earnings and employment of low wage workers. The third part looks at Singapore as a case study of how wage subsidies have been used in a program for generating economic inclusion both in the context of growth as well as in the context of …

Piloting A Cooperative Extension Service Nutrition Education Program On First-Grade Children's Willingness To Try Foods Containing Legumes, Cassandra S. Edwards, Janice R. Herman
Piloting A Cooperative Extension Service Nutrition Education Program On First-Grade Children's Willingness To Try Foods Containing Legumes, Cassandra S. Edwards, Janice R. Herman
Journal of Extension
Many nutrition education campaigns targeting children in the United States focus on increasing fruit and vegetable consumption, but most don't specifically promote legumes. The project described here sought to pilot the effect of an Extension nutrition education program on first grade children's willingness to try foods containing legumes. A significant difference was observed in the distribution of children who took snacks containing legumes from pre- to post- through follow-up education.

Just Be It! Healthy And Fit Increases Fifth Graders' Fruit And Vegetable Intake, Physical Activity, And Nutrition Knowledge, Diana Delcampo, Jacqueline S. Baca, Desatee Jimenez, Paula Roybal Sanchez, Robert Delcampo
Journal of Extension
Just Be It! Healthy and Fit reduces the risk factors for childhood obesity for fifth graders using hands-on field trips, in-class lessons, and parent outreach efforts. Pre-test and post-test scores from the year-long classroom instruction showed a statistically significant increase in fruit and vegetable intake, physical activity, and nutrition knowledge for the students. Parents also gained nutrition knowledge. The program enables students who are at risk for childhood obesity to develop a healthy lifestyle and reduce the risk of health disorders such as diabetes and heart disease in childhood and in adulthood.

Behavior Change Strategies For Successful Long-Term Weight Loss: Focusing On Dietary And Physical Activity Adherence, Not Weight Loss, Nobuko Hongu, Martha P. Kataura, Linda M. Blcok
Journal of Extension
This article helps Extension professionals guide individuals in a successful long-term weight loss program. A program should focus on behavioral changes (improving eating habits and physical activity), not just weight loss. In order to do this, Extension professionals should implement behavior change strategies that motivate individuals to initiate and maintain healthy behaviors that fit their lifestyle in approachable and convenient ways. Behavior change strategies demonstrated here (self-efficacy and self management strategies) are examples that can be incorporated into a weight loss program and could help to maintain those healthy habits even after a program ends.

Basics For Raising Junior Market Turkeys For Junior Turkey Show, Allan Sulser, Jim Jensen
All Current Publications
This fact sheet is constructed to be used by 4-H and FFA youth for training or as a tool to aid in the growing of market turkeys for the Utah Junior Turkey Show or for local turkey shows. The basics of the Utah Turkey Show are fairly simple. Poults (day old turkeys) are ordered from your 4-H agent or FFA advisor usually by mid May of the current year. Your order is then placed by them and your poults are received by everyone in the show on the same day. Everyone receives the same breed of poult, the same age …

We Live In A Country Of Unhcr: The Un Surrogate State And Refugee Policy In The Middle East, Michael Kagan
We Live In A Country Of Unhcr: The Un Surrogate State And Refugee Policy In The Middle East, Michael Kagan
Scholarly Works
Many gaps in the protection of refugees can be connected to a de facto transfer of responsibility for managing refugee policy from sovereign states to United Nations agencies. This phenomenon can be seen in dozens of countries in the Middle East, Africa and Asia, where the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) or the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) manage refugee camps, register newly arrived asylum-seekers, carry out refugee status determination, and administer education, health, livelihood and other social welfare programs.
In carrying out these functions, the UN acts to a great …

Factors Influencing Adoption And Implementation Of Cooking With Kids, An Experiential School-Based Nutrition Education Curriculum, Ann Diker, Lynn M. Walters, Leslie Cunningham-Sabo, Susan S. Baker
Journal of Extension
Little research has been conducted to examine factors leading to adoption and implementation of nutrition education curricula. Data from two Web-based surveys (n = 313) and 27 interviews were used to explore how Diffusion of Innovations' perceived attributes contributed to adoption and implementation of Cooking with Kids (CWK) food and nutrition education curriculum. Results suggest programs that create or adapt nutrition education curricula for use in schools should emphasize experiential methods and ease of use to increase adoption and implementation. Perceived simplicity predicted intended use. Ensuring that users have adequate information and planning time to overcome barriers is essential.

Promoting Active Urban Aging: A Measurement Approach To Neighborhood Walkability For Older Adults, Rachael L. Weiss, Juliana A. Maantay, Marianne Fahs
Cities and the Environment (CATE)
Understanding the role of the built environment on physical activity behavior among older adults is an important public health goal, but evaluating these relationships remains complicated due to the difficulty of measuring specific attributes of the environment. As a result, there is conflicting evidence regarding the association between perceived and objectively measured walkability and physical activity among urban-dwelling older adults. This suggests that both actual environmental features and perceptions of these attributes influence walking behavior. The purpose of this pilot project is to create an Objective Walkability Index (OWI) by census block using a Geographic Information System (GIS) and supplement …

Development Of A Centrifugal Microfluidic Device For Separation And Sorting In Biological Fluids, Gaurav Sunil Bagwe
Development Of A Centrifugal Microfluidic Device For Separation And Sorting In Biological Fluids, Gaurav Sunil Bagwe
Theses
A wide interest in employing micron-scale, integrated biochemical analysis systems for economical and rapid diagnosis has been the principal motivation behind this project. Low operating costs, portability and fast diagnosis times make centrifugal microfluidic devices an attractive option in patient-side diagnostics. Some essential tasks to be performed in microfluidic devices are sample-reagent transport, mixing, separation and detection. All these tasks require precise control of the RPM and spinning time. Centrifugal micro-fluidic platforms have been successfully implemented for detection of hepatitis A, tetanus, as well as for measurement of haemoglobin and hematocrit, for DNA analysis, and for assessment of cardiac disease …

Acute And Second-Meal Effects Of Almond Form In Impaired Glucose Tolerant Adults: A Randomized Crossover Trial, Alisa M. Mori, Robert V. Considine, Richard D. Mattes
Department of Nutrition Science Faculty Publications
Background
Nut consumption may reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The aim of the current study was to measure the acute and second-meal effects of morning almond consumption and determine the contribution of different nut fractions.
Methods
Fourteen impaired glucose tolerant (IGT) adults participated in a randomized, 5-arm, crossover design study where whole almonds (WA), almond butter (AB), defatted almond flour (AF), almond oil (AO) or no almonds (vehicle - V) were incorporated into a 75 g available carbohydrate-matched breakfast meal. Postprandial concentrations of blood glucose, insulin, non-esterified free fatty acids (NEFA), glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and appetitive sensations …

An Investigation Of Racing Performance And Whip Use By Jockeys In Thoroughbred Races, David Evans, Paul Mcgreevy
An Investigation Of Racing Performance And Whip Use By Jockeys In Thoroughbred Races, David Evans, Paul Mcgreevy
Competitive Animal Racing Collection
Concerns have been expressed concerning animal-welfare issues associated with whip use during Thoroughbred races. However, there have been no studies of relationships between performance and use of whips in Thoroughbred racing. Our aim was to describe whip use and the horses' performance during races, and to investigate associations between whip use and racing performance. Under the Australian Racing Board (ARB) rules, only horses that are in contention can be whipped, so we expected that whippings would be associated with superior performance, and those superior performances would be explained by an effect of whipping on horse velocities in the final 400 …
