Gow Ranch Beef Cattle Feasibility Study, Colton Jack Gow

Agribusiness

The purpose of this project was to decide the best time to sell calves on the Gow Ranch in Roseburg, Oregon. The two options are directly off the cow at 550 pounds in October or at 850 pounds in June.

The revenues and costs from selling calves at these two times were collected for the last five years. This data was put into an Excel spreadsheet to show profit and loss from each year. Both selling prices and costs were examined to show at what point to sell would have made the best profit.

Using figures from this spreadsheet it …

Blood-Brain Barrier Impairment In An Animal Model Of Mps Iii B, Svitlana N. Garbuzova-Davis, Michael Louis, Edward M. Haller, Hiranya M. Derasari, Ashley E. Rawls, Paul R. Sanberg Mar 2011

Blood-Brain Barrier Impairment In An Animal Model Of Mps Iii B, Svitlana N. Garbuzova-Davis, Michael Louis, Edward M. Haller, Hiranya M. Derasari, Ashley E. Rawls, Paul R. Sanberg

Integrative Biology Faculty and Staff Publications

Background: Sanfilippo syndrome type B (MPS III B) is caused by a deficiency of α-N-acetylglucosaminidase enzyme, leading to accumulation of heparan sulfate within lysosomes and eventual progressive cerebral and systemic multiple organ abnormalities. However, little is known about the competence of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) in MPS III B. BBB dysfunction in this devastating disorder could contribute to neuropathological disease manifestations.

Methodology/Principal Findings: In the present study, we investigated structural (electron microscope) and functional (vascular leakage) integrity of the BBB in a mouse model of MPS III B at different stages of disease, focusing on brain structures known to experience …

The dairy industry is an important part in the domestic economy in the U.S. and the quality of dairy products hinges on raw milk quality. Microorganisms play a critical role in raw milk quality and they are currently tested and monitored by conventional microbiological tests. …

The Development Of A Novel Technique To Evaluate Binding Between Probiotic Bacteria And Phospholipids, And The Creation Of A Dairy-Based Food Product Rich In Milk Bioactives, Megan Ann Cleveland Mar 2011

The Development Of A Novel Technique To Evaluate Binding Between Probiotic Bacteria And Phospholipids, And The Creation Of A Dairy-Based Food Product Rich In Milk Bioactives, Megan Ann Cleveland

Master's Theses

Probiotic bacteria are increasingly prevalent in food and nutritional products today.  These remarkable microorganisms are capable of imparting exceptional health benefits on their host, including prevention of infection by pathogens and stimulation of immune system function.  Their most common mode of delivery is through dairy products (e.g. yogurt), which are also one of their preferred habitats.  The interactions between probiotic bacteria and dairy systems have been studied, but are still not well discerned.  There is a need for better understanding of these associations, as well as those surrounding the mode of bacterial transfer from the food product to the human …

Socio-Environmental Factors Associated With Pubertal Development In Female Adolescents: The Role Of Prepubertal Tobacco And Alcohol Use, Peck, B Mitchell Peck, Valerie J. Skaggs, Miyuki Fukushima, Howard B. Kaplan

Sociology & Criminology Faculty Publications

This cross-sectional study of 3,106 female adolescents, aged 11–21 years, evaluated the association between prepubertal alcohol and tobacco use and the onset of puberty. Ages at initial breast development, body hair growth, and menarche were self-reported. Prepubertal alcohol and tobacco use were defined as the age at first use before the age of pubertal development and accompanied by regular use. Hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated using Cox proportional hazard models. Logistic regression was used to estimate the association between substance use and delayed puberty, defined as lack of breast development by the age of 13 …

The Socioeconomic Achievement Gap In Mathematics, Adam Meador Mar 2011

The Socioeconomic Achievement Gap In Mathematics, Adam Meador

Dissertations

Currently in the United States a gap exists in the education of high and low socio-economic students. There is an education available for the socioeconomically challenged and a different system of education for those who live in a higher socioeconomic status. The purpose of this study was to explore the achievement gap in mathematics for elementary students. Specifically, the gap between the students’ scores who attended a school with a free and reduced price meal percentage below 25% and students’ scores who attended a school with a free and reduced price meal percentage above 75% was explored. Additionally, the focus …

Implementing A Summer Fitness Program To Enhance Fitness Test Scores, Keith A. Price

Dissertations

Presently, there is general disquiet about the poor fitness and obesity levels being displayed by young people in the USA. Given my concern about this as a Physical Education teacher, I conducted a qualitative action research project that involved running a six-week Summer Fitness Club for elementary students in Grades 1-5. The purpose was to see if this program could make a difference in the fitness test scores of the children and to monitor the implementation of that program. The course was designed to operate four days a week for six weeks with each session lasting two hours. Each session …

Optimization Of Point-Of-Use Water Treatment Device For Disaster Relief, Margaret June Herzog Mar 2011

Optimization Of Point-Of-Use Water Treatment Device For Disaster Relief, Margaret June Herzog

Master's Theses

Point-of-use (POU) drinking water treatment is a common method of providing drinking water in disaster relief situations when critical water infrastructure is damaged. In these cases, POU treatment devices can be used to treat local water until relief organizations set up more permanent water provision methods. One such POU technology is PŪR® Purifier of Water, a combined coagulation/flocculation and disinfection chemical treatment sachet produced by Procter & Gamble. PŪR® has been shown to treat contaminated water to meet water quality standards and guidelines set by the U.S. EPA for water purifiers and by the World Health Organization and …

Rice Response To Nitrogen Fertilization Under Stale Seedbed And Conventional Tillage Systems, D. L. Harrell, B. S. Tubaña, J. Lofton, Y. Kanke

Faculty Publications

Drill-seeded, delayed-flood rice (Oryza sativa L.) using fall-stale seedbed (FSS) tillage has risen in popularity over the past decade in the southern USA. Nitrogen research in rice has historically focused on conventional tillage (CT). The objective of the current study was to evaluate potential diff erences in agronomic characteristics, optimal N rate, N uptake, and N fertilizer recovery efficiency (RE) between the FSS and CT rice production systems. Two varieties ('Catahoula' and 'Neptune'), two tillage systems (CT and FSS), and nine N rates (0, 34, 67, 101, 134, 168, 202, 235, and 269 kg ha-1) were evaluated. Rice emerged 4 …

Race And The Local Politics Of Punishment In The New World Of Welfare, Richard C. Fording, Joe Soss, Sanford F. Schram Mar 2011

Race And The Local Politics Of Punishment In The New World Of Welfare, Richard C. Fording, Joe Soss, Sanford F. Schram

Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research Faculty Research and Scholarship

To illuminate how race affects the usage of punitive tools in policy implementation settings, we analyze sanctions imposed for noncompliant client behavior under welfare reform. Drawing on a model of racial classification and policy choice, we test four hypotheses regarding client race, local context, and sanctioning. Based on longitudinal and cross-sectional multilevel analyses of individual-level administrative data, we find that race plays a significant role in shaping sanction implementation. Its effects, however, are highly contingent on client characteristics, local political contexts, and the degree to which state governments devolve policy control to local officials.
