Johnson-Sea-Link Submersibles Tools For Research And Discovery: Summary Of Users, Publications, Documentaries And Testimonials., John K. Reed, Tamara M. Frank
Faculty Scholarship
This document was compiled by various scientists and users of the Johnson-Sea-Link (JSL) submersibles. This document is not inclusive but presents some highlights of major discoveries, publications, and grants made possible by use of Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution's (HBOI) research submersibles. The Johnson-Sea-Link submersibles were the cornerstone of Harbor Branch when Edwin Link invented and built the submersibles at HBOI (Harbor Branch Foundation) nearly 40 years ago. The Johnson-Sea-Link submersibles have resulted in international acclaim for Harbor Branch from recent research discoveries to Discovery Channel documentaries. The ocean going and deep-water capabilities of HBOI have been a core strength of …

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts
This document is one of a four part series produced by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission to provide direction to managers of Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) in Nebraska. Other documents in the series cover management of woodlands, wetlands, and converted habitats.
Prior to EuroAmerican settlement grasslands covered 98% of the Nebraska landscape and supported the majority of the state’s biodiversity. Since settlement, Nebraska’s native grasslands have suffered serious decline. For example, approximately 98% of eastern Nebraska’s tallgrass prairie has been lost to development. In central and western Nebraska grassland losses have been less dramatic though still substantial. Remnant grasslands …
A Quantitative Analysis Of An Eating Disorder Prevention Program, Jennalee Murray
A Quantitative Analysis Of An Eating Disorder Prevention Program, Jennalee Murray
Theses and Dissertations
Eating disorders affect millions of people in the United States alone. This study aimed to test the effectiveness of a preventative curriculum for eating disorders called Eating Disorders: Physical, Social, and Emotional Consequences, A High School Curriculum about Anorexia, Bulimia, and Compulsive Eating (EDPSEC). Participants included an experimental group of 27 students in their ninth grade health class and a control group of 21 students. The research examined the integrity of the curriculum administration and changes in participating students' attitudes and behaviors. The outcome measures used were students' scores on the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26) and the Eating Survey (ES). …

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany
The native fan palms of the Baja California peninsula (Mexico) and neighboring southern California (USA) comprise two species each in Washingtonia and Brahea. While these are among the most familiar ornamental palms in the world, many features of their taxonomy, distribution, and environmental relationships remain unresolved. We utilized Google Earth Digital Globe imagery (and limited surveys by air and land) to develop the first map detailing the geographic distribution of palm populations in the Peninsular Range Province (PRP) and used these data to formulate new hypotheses on their biotic and abiotic relationships. We inventoried 15,216 populations covering an area …

Relations Among Media, Eating Pathology And Body Dissatisfaction In College Women, Carrie Bair
Relations Among Media, Eating Pathology And Body Dissatisfaction In College Women, Carrie Bair
Theses and Dissertations
Research has identified a relation between exposure to thin-ideal magazine and television media images and eating disorder pathology. However, few studies have examined the potential influence of Internet media on eating disorder behaviors and attitudes. This study investigated the associations among appearance-orientated media exposure, body dissatisfaction, eating pathology and thin-ideal internalization in a sample of 421 female undergraduate students. Results indicate that undergraduate women spend significantly more time viewing appearance-oriented sources online, rather than reading appearance-orientated magazines. Appearance-oriented Internet consumption was also more strongly associated with eating disorder pathology than was use of other media (television and magazines). Relations between …

Among the most prevalent of chronic conditions affecting older adults globally, hearing loss prevalence is increasing and its impact on society growing. Untreated hearing loss diminishes ones ability to communicate and its strong association with depression and cognitive decline adds further to the burden of hearing loss. Hearing health care is rarely included in the traditional medical exam for older adults, it is typically not considered a risk factor for cognitive decline or falls, and it is not a condition for which routine screening has been recommended by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force. Yet in older adults, disability typically …
