The Challenges Of Balancing Careers And Family Life Facing College Women In Jordan, Anna Chang Apr 2011

The Challenges Of Balancing Careers And Family Life Facing College Women In Jordan, Anna Chang

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The country of Jordan serves as one of the most progressive countries in the Middle East, yet Jordan has the lowest female economic participation rates out of all the countries in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Quantitatively, women’s higher education attainment equals and, in some cases, even surpasses that of men. However, their economic participation barely begins to compare to that of their male counterparts. The purpose of this study is to investigate the potential causes for this large gap, using qualitative evidence from the interviews of fifteen college women at the University of Jordan and regional …

Companion Animals as Laboratory Research Subjects Collection

Dogs are sometimes referred to as “man’s best friend” and with the increase in urbanization and lifestyle changes, dogs are seen by their owners as family members. Society expresses specific concerns about the experimental use of dogs, as they are sometimes perceived to have a special status for humans. This may appear somewhat conflicting with the idea that the intrinsic value of all animals is the same, and that also several other animal species are used in biomedical research and toxicology. This aspect and many others are discussed in an introductory chapter dealing with ethical considerations on the use of …

Batik: A Process And A Means Of Progress, Emily Swietlik Apr 2011

Batik: A Process And A Means Of Progress, Emily Swietlik

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

I chose an alternative ISP of doing batik because it incorporated all of the facets of my interests: anthropology, international development, and art. As an artist, creating my own batik satisfied my love for expressing how I see the world through art. As an anthropologist, I was able to gain insight on a new culture. As an international activist, I was able to explore how batik can be used as a mechanism to improve the quality of life for people in Senegal. While my project was all encompassing, the primary objective of my research was to gain an understanding of …

Rural Futures: How Can Agricultural Development Lead To A High Quality Of Life?, Jessie Ebersole Apr 2011

Rural Futures: How Can Agricultural Development Lead To A High Quality Of Life?, Jessie Ebersole

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Study Objectives:

Uganda, with its wealth of arable land and water resources, has unrealized agricultural development potential. How food is produced and distributed will impact United Nations Millennium Development Goal targets, including the eradication of extreme hunger, reductions in child mortality, and improvements in maternal health and environmental sustainability, yet advances towards the MDG’s have been limited. This study explores how Uganda’s agricultural sector can be developed in a way that improves the quality of life of smallholder farmers in Katente and Namuyenje parishes in Mukono district, Uganda. Ugandan agricultural production is starved of new sources of knowledge and technology, …

Predators Of Enashiva: A Survey Of Occurrence & Distribution, Adrienne Fisk Bowles

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This study was conducted during a period of 16 days (April 10 to April 26, 2011) at the Enashiva Nature Refuge in Northern Tanzania. It was a modified repeat study, using the same methodologies of a mammal survey conducted in November 2009, however this study only focused on occurrence and distribution of predators in the highest trophic level and accounted for reptile and birds, in addition to mammals. Based upon the findings of the November 2009 study, it was hypothesized that the woodland would have the highest predator species richness. This hypothesis was supported by the data; the woodland habitat …

This study examines the relationship between citizens, political parties, and local government in Nepal. Specifically, the research focuses on the relationship as it pertains to the decision-making processes in the VDC and DDC in Salleri, Solukhumbu. Through interviews with individuals at the policy level in Kathmandu, officials in Salleri, and residents of Salleri, the research studies this interaction and how it relates to citizen’s individual agency, political parties’ role as a middleman, and local government’s ability to communicate with local residents. The research concludes that parties are the only way for citizens to take their demands to local bodies. This …

Heat Induced Cis/Trans Isomerization In Vegetable Oils And Oleic Acid, John Harwood Scott, Sarah E.G. Porter Apr 2011

Heat Induced Cis/Trans Isomerization In Vegetable Oils And Oleic Acid, John Harwood Scott, Sarah E.G. Porter

Theses & Honors Papers

With the FDA mandating that all foodstuff labels list the amount of trans fates within their product, it becomes necessary to have a rapid and reproducible method for quantifying trans content within foods. Research has led to the advent of an analytical method that utilizes attenuated total reflectance with a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer to quantitatively measure trans fat in foodstuffs. The method is possible because of an infrared absorbance band at 966 cm that is unique to nutritional trans fats. This research used the aforementioned method to quantify trans fat content in common cooking vegetable oils. Before analysis , …

From Famine To Feast: The Give And Take Of Food In A Global Subsistence Environment, Laurence M. Carucci Apr 2011

From Famine To Feast: The Give And Take Of Food In A Global Subsistence Environment, Laurence M. Carucci

Pacific Studies

Food is the primary transactional substance for Enewetak/Ujelang people [Republic of the Marshall Islands] and its production, preparation, consumption and exchange are central to how local people fashion and maintain social relationships and how they construct identities. At the same time, while the constitutive properties of food have remained culturally vigorous, the foods themselves have changed radically under colonialism. In particular, rehabilitation attempts in the post-nuclear testing era on Enewetak introduced extraordinary rapid dietary changes in the community and resulted in the onset of an epidemic of sedentary illnesses. The social practices that relate to food production and consumption are …

Low Strength Is Related To Diminished Ground Reaction Forces And Walking Performance In Older Women, Dain P. Laroche, Erica D. Millet, Rachel J. Kralian Apr 2011

Low Strength Is Related To Diminished Ground Reaction Forces And Walking Performance In Older Women, Dain P. Laroche, Erica D. Millet, Rachel J. Kralian

Kinesiology

The purpose of this study was to determine how lower-limb strength in older women affected gait speed, supportive forces, spatial, and temporal aspects of walking gait. Twenty-four women between 65 – 80 yr performed maximal voluntary isometric contractions for the knee extensors (KE), knee flexors (KF), ankle plantarflexors (PF) and ankle dorsiflexors (DF) and were separated into low strength and normal strength groups using a KE torque threshold of 1.5 Nm kg−1 . They walked at both a standard speed of 0.8 m s−1 and at a self-selected maximal speed on an instrumented treadmill that recorded vertical ground reaction forces …

Financial Sustainability Of E-Governance Embedded Rural Telecentres (Egert) In India, Gopal Naik, K P Basavarajappa, Siddharth Joshi

Working Papers

In the recent years, two significant changes have taken place in an effort to address the rural poor: Businesses have started recognizing the potential of rural markets and governments have started using telecentres for providing government-to-citizen G2C services to rural citizens. In India, the national and sub-national governments have supported businesses to establish telecentres in rural areas to provide information technology-enabled services. However, the focus so far has been mostly on B2C services and financial viability of the common service centres (CSCs) is being questioned. We argue conceptually and show through preliminary evidence that designing these telecentres with embedded G2C …
