Yak, A Green Icon And A Good Investment, Caroline Kang Apr 2011

Yak, A Green Icon And A Good Investment, Caroline Kang

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

“Yak, A Green Icon and Good Investment” was conceived after I briefly interned for the Mongol Yak Society during the NGO Drop Off. I became interested and even, invested in their mission. For three weeks of the ISP period, I worked closely with the Mongolian Yak Society based in Ulaanbaatar and researched how increasing the productive value of yaks through improved communications, equipment, knowledge, and support will address several key environmental and economic issues. I further focused on the Mongolian Yak Society and its role as a detached entity that intervenes on various levels of the yak wool value chain: …

The Path To Diagnosis: A Case Study Of Two Children With Autism, Maria Nagle Apr 2011

The Path To Diagnosis: A Case Study Of Two Children With Autism, Maria Nagle

Education Masters

In recent years there have been a growing number of individuals that are being diagnosed with autism. It is interesting that autism did not seem to be as prevalent in society just a few years ago. In order to best determine why autism is more common, the cause of autism must be examined. Currently, the exact cause of autism is unknown; however, the most likely theory at the time is genetics. Understating why autism occurs will help further research on why the number of individuals with autism might be growing. After reviewing the case studies of two families with children …

The Poverty Of Wealth And Income In The United States, Luke E. G. Feudner Apr 2011

The Poverty Of Wealth And Income In The United States, Luke E. G. Feudner

Professional Projects

An alternative poverty rate was calculated using poverty thresholds from the U.S. Census Bureau to assess income poverty and a similar set of thresholds at four months’ of the poverty threshold for annual income to assess wealth (i.e. net worth) poverty. Using point estimates derived from the multiple imputations of the Survey of Consumer Finances (SCF) between the years of 1989 and 2007, the findings revealed the percentage of households in poverty by both measures was 6% in 2007 compared to 11.1% of households experiencing poverty of income only and 22.4% experiencing a poverty of at least one of the …

Self-Awareness Of Food Choice And Body Image: A Relational Study In The Undergraduate Female Population, Cassandra Lenza Apr 2011

Self-Awareness Of Food Choice And Body Image: A Relational Study In The Undergraduate Female Population, Cassandra Lenza

Social Work Theses

The present study has measured, by self-report, factors that affect food choice in the college-aged female population and the relationship between these factors and perceived body image. A review of the literature reveals that health, appearance, cost, time and availability all serve as influential factors in this population’s food choices, but the literature does not investigate the relationship between comparing the variables of food choice and body image. This correlational study employed a survey research design with Likert-scaled questions to gain insight regarding food choice in seventy-five undergraduate students. The main findings suggest that the target population based food consumption …

This study aimed to ascertain what factors including school/peer influences, culture, family lifestyle, and neighborhood environment, during individuals’ adolescence, impact their weight as young adults. The researcher conducted a survey that was given to students at a private catholic college in southern New England. A survey instrument was developed and distributed as a Facebook event restricted to college students at the specific institution, and additionally was distributed to one social work undergraduate course. Let's Move! From Dc To Pc: Policy And Programming In Providence Charter Schools Around Student's Awareness Towards Living Healthy, Carmine Perrotti

Annual Celebration of Student Scholarship and Creativity

A thesis developed out of an intership for the Office of the First Lady's "Let's Move Initiative". Following said internship, the author conducted original research on the local level - namely, Providence charter schools - to design, implement, and assess a series of educational “interventions”. These interventions were created to provide information to students and their parents about the benefits of healthy eating and exercise. Over 500 elementary-level students were surveyed for the research. See document abstract for more information.
