Green Tea Aids In Overall Health, Noelle Norman
Undergraduate Research Conference
Green tea is highly effective in aiding in overall health if consumed on a daily basis and can reduce incidence of cardiovascular disease, obesity, type 2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer. The primary compounds found in green tea are polyphenols which include catechins, epicatechin(EC), epigallocatechin(EGC), epicatechingallate(ECG), andepigallocatechingallate(EGCG). Five research studies were analyzed to verify the validity of the hypothesis that green consumption is beneficial in overall health. In these studies, green tea was found to aid in weight loss with those who consumed green tea regularly, as well as having effects on thermogenesis and fat oxidation to control wait …

Metabolomics studies hold promise for the discovery of pathways linked to disease processes. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) represents the leading cause of death and morbidity worldwide. Here we used a metabolomics approach to generate unbiased small-molecule metabolic profiles in plasma that predict risk for CVD. Three metabolites of the dietary lipid phosphatidylcholine—choline, trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) and betaine—were identified and then shown to predict risk for CVD in an independent large clinical cohort. Dietary supplementation of mice with choline, TMAO or betaine promoted upregulation of multiple macrophage scavenger receptors linked to atherosclerosis, and supplementation with choline or TMAO promoted atherosclerosis. Studies using …

Estimation Of The Number Of Days Required To Determine Usual Antioxidant Intakes And Assessment Of The Prevalence Of Nutrient Inadequacy Among College Students, Catherine G. Davis
Master's Theses
High intake of antioxidant rich foods has been shown to decrease risk factors of chronic disease. Young adulthood may be crucial in establishing healthy lifestyles including adequate nutrient consumption.
The present study was designed 1) to estimate usual nutrient intakes, 2) to calculate the number of days required to estimate usual antioxidant intake, and 3) to assess intake adequacy from diet and diet + supplement sources by using the Estimated Average Requirement (EAR). The USDA Flavonoid and Proanthocyanidin databases, food consumption data, and dietary supplement use data from 60 students aged 18-25 years at the University of Connecticut were utilized. …

Visual Evoked Potentials: Analysis Of The Fovea And Perifovea, Wanda Louise Parham-Bruce
Theses
Visual evoked potentials (VEP) were used to measure how stimulus properties (pattern VEP check sizes/spatial frequency) and retinal eccentricity (fovea versus perifovea) interact to give rise to the final VEP response. The purposes of this study were to investigate how stimulus check size (spatial frequencies) and retinal eccentricity affect the VEP response, re-examine whether the cortical magnification factor is applicable to VEP measures, and to determine optimal sized VEP checks for foveal and perifoveal stimuli. In this study, we used a foveal target that was a two degree circle with a diameter of 3.6 cm; a perifoveal target that was …

Inequalities Of Caries Experience In Nevada Youth Expressed By Dmft Index Vs. Significant Caries Index (Sic) Over Time, Marcia Ditmyer, Georgia Dounis, Connie Mobley, Eli Schwarz
Dental Medicine Faculty Research
Background: With the increasingly polarized distribution of dental caries among children and adolescents, the usual DMFT measure has become a less meaningful population descriptor. To re-focus on identifying the high caries prevalence group the Significant Caries Index (SiC) was created. The aims of this study were to analyze the prevalence and severity of dental caries in Nevada youth over a period of eight years and to compare its expression by means of DMFT and SiC; analyze the caries trends in the population and their underlying factors, and determine whether Nevada youth were at risk for significantly high levels of dental …
