Darmstadt, Hannah Blencowe, Robert Pattinson, Neil F. Moran, G. Justus Hofmeyr, Rachel A. Haws, Shereen Zulfiqar Bhutta, Joy E. Lawn

Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology

Background: Our objective was to estimate the effect of various childbirth care packages on neonatal mortality due to intrapartum-related events ("birth asphyxia") in term babies for use in the Lives Saved Tool (LiST).

Methods: We conducted a systematic literature review to identify studies or reviews of childbirth care packages as defined by United Nations norms (basic and comprehensive emergency obstetric care, skilled care at birth). We also reviewed Traditional Birth Attendant (TBA) training. Data were abstracted into standard tables and quality assessed by adapted GRADE criteria. For interventions with low quality evidence, but strong GRADE recommendation for implementation, an expert …

Dartmouth Scholarship

Background: Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is the leading cause of acute lower respiratory infections (ALRI) in children. It is estimated to cause approximately 33.8 million new episodes of ALRI in children annually, 96% of these occurring in developing countries. It is also estimated to result in about 53,000 to 199,000 deaths annually in young children. Currently there are several vaccine and immunoprophylaxis candidates against RSV in the developmental phase targeting active and passive immunization.

Methods: We used a modified CHNRI methodology for setting priorities in health research investments. This was done in two stages. In Stage I, we systematically reviewed …

Dhhs' And Epa's Proposal To Lower Fluoride Levels In Drinking Water, Shannon Wirz Apr 2011

Dhhs' And Epa's Proposal To Lower Fluoride Levels In Drinking Water, Shannon Wirz

College of Health Sciences Poster Presentations

On January 7th, 2011 the U.S. DHHS recommended setting the level of fluoride in drinking water to the lowest end of the current optimal range (0.7 to 1.2 ppm). EPA is initiating a review of the maximum amount of fluoride allowed in drinking water based on scientific assessments of health effects from too much fluoride. MCL (Maximum Contaminant Level) is the legal threshold limit on the amount of a substance allowed in public water systems. EPA sets the MCL to address adverse health effects. Current MCL for fluoride is 4 mg/L. The EPA is unsure if they will revise the …

All Leaves Are Not Created Equal: Variation Among Leaves In Chemical Defenses And Nutritional Quality, Xochi Campos, Amy C. Ulappa, Xinzhu Pu, Jennifer S. Forbey Apr 2011

All Leaves Are Not Created Equal: Variation Among Leaves In Chemical Defenses And Nutritional Quality, Xochi Campos, Amy C. Ulappa, Xinzhu Pu, Jennifer S. Forbey

College of Arts and Sciences Poster Presentations

Coevolution among plants and herbivores has led to variation in plant defenses and herbivore foraging. Plants must defend against herbivores, whereas herbivores must find ways to overcome plant defenses and meet nutritional needs. Variation in plant quality is important because it can influence selection of plants by herbivores for food. Few studies have investigated the variation occurring within a single plant. Sagebrush offers an excellent system for studying the variation in dietary and chemical quality within a plant. First, variation in nutrition and chemical content exists between subspecies (Kelsey 1982) and between plants of a single subspecies of sagebrush from …

Impact Of Outcome Severity And Perceiver Similarity On Judgments Of Blame And Responsibility, Bridget L. Hanson Apr 2011

Impact Of Outcome Severity And Perceiver Similarity On Judgments Of Blame And Responsibility, Bridget L. Hanson

Theses and Dissertations

As the severity of an outcome increases, the responsibility assigned to the actor increases. This relationship interacts with actor-observer similarity such that similar others are typically assigned less responsibility in severe instances. These defensive attributions protect the perceiver from the conclusion that a similarly severe outcome could befall him/her. This study investigated the defensive attribution hypothesis as it relates to attributions of controllability, responsibility, and blame as well as punishment outcomes. Outcome severity and actor-perceiver similarity were manipulated using a child neglect paradigm in which a child is left unattended in a vehicle on a hot day. Within this context, …

Translocation Effects Of Lcrv Extracellular Surface Residues And Regulation Of Lcrg Binding To The T3ss Of Yersinia Pestis, Thomas A. Henderson Apr 2011

Translocation Effects Of Lcrv Extracellular Surface Residues And Regulation Of Lcrg Binding To The T3ss Of Yersinia Pestis, Thomas A. Henderson

Theses and Dissertations

Yersinia pestis, the etiological agent of the plague, immobilizes the host's innate immune response by translocating proteins called Yops (Yersinia outer proteins) into the eukaryotic cytoplasm using a type III secretion system (T3SS) injectisome known as the Yersinia secretion complex (Ysc). The T3SS injectisome, in many ways, resembles a hypodermic needle, composed of oligomeric rings with distinct areas responsible for different functions and many of these areas share homology to the flagellar T3SS basal body inner and outer membrane rings. Starting with the cytoplasmic region of the inner membrane known as the C-ring, this is an area where secretion is …

An Education Production Function For Botswanan Secondary Schools, Nathan T. Moore Apr 2011

An Education Production Function For Botswanan Secondary Schools, Nathan T. Moore

9th Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium and Celebration

This study investigates the determinants of educational outcomes in the developing world by estimating an education production function for Botswanan secondary schools. Education plays an essential role in the development process, as a high-quality educational system is the only means by which a developing country expands its stock of human capital. Additionally, education contributes to the improvement of health outcomes and political institutions. Sub-Saharan Africa is perhaps the region of the world for which efficiency in education is most important, as policymakers are faced with the combination of a rapidly growing population, low levels of education, and limited resources. Without …

Economic Determinism Of Reproductive Ideologies, Kristen L. Brustad Apr 2011

Economic Determinism Of Reproductive Ideologies, Kristen L. Brustad

9th Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium and Celebration

While having children is an individual or couple based decision, general population trends help to indicate correlations between certain factors and fertility. Among these factors is the state of the economy. For an individual deciding on potential children, the expected costs can help to explain whether or not a person knowingly and purposefully plans to have children. The concept of this research is to combine the qualitative data on personal ideologies about having children with the quantitative data on how the economy has impacted these fertility decisions. On the most basic level, this research aims to gain insight on the …
