Evaluation Of Recurrence Risks For Left-Sided Cardiac Lesions, Sarah Swain
Evaluation Of Recurrence Risks For Left-Sided Cardiac Lesions, Sarah Swain
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
It is widely accepted that hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS), aortic valve stenosis with or without bicuspid aortic valve (AS/BAV) and coarctation of the aorta (CoA) occur in families more commonly with each other than with any other congenital heart defect (CHD). Genetic counseling for CHDs is currently based on empiric risk estimates derived from data collected on all types of CHDs between 1968 and 1990. Additionally, for the specific group of defects described above, termed left-sided lesions, estimates are available for sibling recurrence. Utilizing family history data from 757 probands recruited between 1997 and 2007 from The Children’s Hospital …
Activities Of Muscadine Grape Skin And Polyphenolic Constituents Against Helicobacter Pylori, Joseph Brown
Activities Of Muscadine Grape Skin And Polyphenolic Constituents Against Helicobacter Pylori, Joseph Brown
All Dissertations
Helicobacter pylori is a microaerophilic, gram-negative bacterium and among the most persistent of all human pathogens. Its presence in the gastric environment is corre-lated with diseases such as gastritis, peptic ulcers, mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma, and gastric carcinoma. Multiple factors are believed responsible for disease progression and outcome including infecting strain(s) genetic composition, age of acqui-sition, host immune response, environment, and diet. Due to the complexity of H. pylori infection, all possible host-pathogen interactions should be considered. One important factor frequently underplayed is host dietary habits which may serve a more important role during and immediately following infection with H. …
Health Care Providers’ Perception Of The Barriers In Practice In Addressing Childhood Obesity, Ernestine Iona Brown
Health Care Providers’ Perception Of The Barriers In Practice In Addressing Childhood Obesity, Ernestine Iona Brown
Nursing Masters
Childhood obesity has been identified as a major health problem in America. It has been deemed a social and economical problem that has significantly impacted the health of American youth (Small, Anderson, & Melnyk, 2007). The prevalence of childhood obesity has been associated with the development of chronic illnesses in the pediatric population, such as diabetes type 2 and hypertension, which more commonly impacted adults. Health care providers are essential to intervening with obese children in an appropriate environment. Currently there are barriers in communication on this topic dilemma between parents and health care providers.

Calcium Provision In A Placentotrophic Lizard: Structural Differentiation Reflects Functional Specialization., Haley K. Stinnett
Calcium Provision In A Placentotrophic Lizard: Structural Differentiation Reflects Functional Specialization., Haley K. Stinnett
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Viviparity (live birth) and placentation have evolved in more than 100 lineages of squamate reptiles. However, highly placentotrophic species in which embryos receive the majority of nutrients for development via maternal transport across a placenta are rare. Pseudemoia pagenstecheri is a viviparous Australian scincid lizard with extensive placental transfer of nutrients. For example, 90% of neonate calcium is received via placental transfer. This species has a regionally differentiated chorioallantoic placenta distinguished by an elliptical-shaped region, the placentome. The placentome is characterized by hypertrophied uterine and embryonic epithelial cells supported by dense vascular networks. The remainder of the chorioallantoic placenta is …
Communicating Qualitative Research Study Designs To Research Ethics Review Boards, Carolyn Ells
Communicating Qualitative Research Study Designs To Research Ethics Review Boards, Carolyn Ells
The Qualitative Report
Researchers using qualitative methodologies appear to be particularly prone to having their study designs called into question by research ethics or funding agency review committees. In this paper, the author considers the issue of communicating qualitative research study designs in the context of institutional research ethics review and offers suggestions for researchers to consider in their communication of study designs to research ethics review boards. General information about the mandate of research ethics review boards is provided. Plasma dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) decreases ~80% between ages 25 and 75 yr. In a preliminary study, we found that 6 mo of DHEA replacement improved insulin action in elderly individuals. The purpose of the present larger, randomized double-blind study was to determine whether a longer period of DHEA replacement improves glucose tolerance. Fifty-seven men and 68 women aged 65 to 75 yr were randomly assigned to 50 mg DHEA or placebo once daily. Year one was a randomized, double blind trial. Year 2 was an open label continuation. DHEA replacement improved glucose tolerance in participants who had abnormal GT initially, reduced …
Investigation Of A Simulated Annealing Cooling Schedule Used To Optimize The Estimation Of The Fiber Diameter Distribution In A Peripheral Nerve Trunk, Arya Vigeh
Master's Theses
In previous studies it was determined that the fiber diameter distribution in a peripheral nerve could be estimated by a simulation technique known as group delay. These results could be further improved using a combinatorial optimization algorithm called simulated annealing. This paper explores the structure and behavior of simulated annealing for the application of optimizing the group delay estimated fiber diameter distribution. Specifically, a set of parameters known as the cooling schedule is investigated to determine its effectiveness in the optimization process.
Simulated annealing is a technique for finding the global minimum (or maximum) of a cost function which may …

Effect Of Heavy Metals Found In Flue Gas On Growth And Lipid Accumulation For Green Algae Scenedesmus Obliquus, Reece Butler
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In recent years there has been a growing interest within the United States to replace fossil fuels with biofuels for environmental and national security reasons. Algal feedstocks have the potential of producing significantly higher yields of oil for biofuels than any other source. It is well known that high concentrations of CO2 can increase algal yields. Flue gas from coal fire power plants is an obvious source of CO2. The flue gas, however, will contain other chemicals besides CO2 that may not be beneficial to the algae. The research objectives for this study were to determine …
Algal Biofilm Production And Harvesting System For Wastewater Treatment With Biofuels By-Products, Logan Christenson
Algal Biofilm Production And Harvesting System For Wastewater Treatment With Biofuels By-Products, Logan Christenson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Excess nitrogen and phosphorus in discharged wastewaters can lead to downstream eutrophication, ecosystem damage, and impaired water quality that may affect human health. Chemical-based and physical-based technologies are available to remove these nutrients; however, they often consume significant amounts of energy and chemicals, greatly increasing treatment costs. Algae are capable of removing these pollutants through biomass assimilation, and if harvested, can be utilized as a feedstock for biomethane or biodiesel production. Currently, difficulties in harvesting, concentrating, and dewatering algae have limited the development of an economically feasible treatment and production process. When algae are grown as surface-attached biofilms, the biomass …

With the price of corn now over $6 per bushel, and with feedlot total cost per pound of gain now approaching $1.00 per pound of gain there are new incentives to try and add weight to calves outside of feedlots. The question then arises of how to add weight to a calf in the most economical manner. There are many different feeding programs to consider. However, with few exceptions, the cheapest way to add weight outside of a feedlot usually involves the calf grazing for an extended period of time. Winter pasture grazing, wheat pasture grazing and corn stalk grazing …

Stress Response And Pathogenesis Of Salmonella Enterica Serovar Typhimurium, Jigna D. Shah
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Salmonella is a food-borne pathogen that leads to substantial illness worldwide. The clinical syndromes associated with Salmonella infection are enteric (typhoid) fever and gastroenteritis, in healthy humans. Typhoid fever is caused by host-adapted S. Typhi and S. Paratyphi. Gastroenteritis is caused by serovars usually referred to as non typhoidal Salmonellae (NTS). In recent years, an increasing number of outbreaks due to NTS, despite increased efforts in food safety, were reported because of persistence of Salmonella in the food chain. Thus I hypothesized that Salmonella is able to withstand stresses in the environment and treatments used during food processing …
