Systemic Aav-Mediated Gene Therapy Using Epo-R76e To Protect Retinal Ganglion Cells From Optic Nerve Injury And Disease, Timothy A. Sullivan May 2011

Systemic Aav-Mediated Gene Therapy Using Epo-R76e To Protect Retinal Ganglion Cells From Optic Nerve Injury And Disease, Timothy A. Sullivan

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Neuroprotection is a strategy to prevent or reduce neuronal cell death regardless of the underlying cause. Erythropoietin (EPO) exhibits neuroprotective effects in a variety of in vitro and in vivo models of neuronal cell death although its classical function is the regulation of red blood cell production. EPO crosses the blood brain barrier and therefore can be delivered systemically. However, long term treatment with exogenous EPO causes over stimulation of the erythropoietic pathway which can be lethal. The erythropoietic and neuroprotective pathways are regulated by different receptors; further, it is possible to modify EPO to primarily, if not solely, activate …

Intergroup Forgiveness In The Middle East: Cognitive And Affective Antecedents To Intergroup Forgiveness And The Relationship Between Intergroup Forgiveness And Psychological Well-Being Among Israeli Jews, Alon Rice May 2011

Intergroup Forgiveness In The Middle East: Cognitive And Affective Antecedents To Intergroup Forgiveness And The Relationship Between Intergroup Forgiveness And Psychological Well-Being Among Israeli Jews, Alon Rice

Dissertations

In the past three decades, there has been a burgeoning interest in the scientific study of interpersonal forgiveness. However, only a few studies have elucidated cognitive and affective variables related to intergroup forgiveness. Moreover, no study has examined the degree to which intergroup forgiveness may contribute to one’s psychological well-being, nor has any study thoroughly examined intergroup forgiveness in Israel. Current study results have shown a significant relationship between quality of intergroup contact between Israeli Jews and Israeli Arabs/Palestinians, and Israeli Jews’ forgiveness attitudes toward Palestinians, a relationship mediated by Israeli Jews’ trust, attitudes, and empathy toward Palestinians, as well …

Quantifying And Manipulating Spatiotemporal Trends In Rodent Space Use And Consumption Rates On Incidentally Encountered Prey, Tyler Evan Schartel May 2011

Quantifying And Manipulating Spatiotemporal Trends In Rodent Space Use And Consumption Rates On Incidentally Encountered Prey, Tyler Evan Schartel

Theses

Spatiotemporal heterogeneity in predator activity can generate and influence the availability of refugia to prey. In eastern forests, white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus) and eastern chipmunks (Tamias striatus) are abundant generalist rodents, and large-scale removal experiments have confirmed they are important predators of gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar) pupae and songbird nests and eggs. Models predict the extinction of gypsy moth populations when confronted with abundant mouse populations, but small-scale (10s of m) heterogeneity in rodent activity may allow for the persistence of moth populations. I quantified the magnitude, variability, temporal persistence, and spatial structure of white-footed mouse and eastern chipmunk activity, …

Perceptions Of Bermudian Leaders About The Philosophies, Major Purposes, And Effectiveness Of The Public School System In Bermuda Since 1987, Vincent Sinclair Williams Jr.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This is a study of the perceptions, philosophies, purpose, and effectiveness of public education in Bermuda. It includes a purposeful sample of Bermuda leaders in education, government, business, and public life. I prepared a series of questions that I used as an interview guide to obtain the opinions of participants in the study. Most participants did not provide specific information about the official philosophy, major purposes, or specific educational outcomes of the public education system since its restructuring began in 1987. Many indicated their frustration about the lack of such basic data as enrollment, graduation, and dropout rates. Nearly all …

On The Cranial Osteology Of Eremiascincus And Its Use For Identification., William B. Gelnaw

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A persistent problem for Australian paleontology has been a lack of diagnostic characters for identifying lizard fossils. Eremiascincus is one of the most widespread genera in Australia, so it was examined for distinguishing features and how it fits into a model of skink evolution. Skulls of Eremiascincus were examined within five separate contexts: 1) a description of the cranial osteology, 2) a qualitative comparison of individual cranial elements of Eremiascincus to closely related Ctenotus, 3) a description of the cranial allometry in Eremiascincus using linear morphometrics, 4) using cranial morphometrics of skinks to deduce their phylogeny, and 5) using …

The Occurrence Of An Abdominal Fauna In An Articulated Tapir (Tapirus Polkensis) Recovered From The Miocene Gray Fossil Site Northeast Tennessee., Shannon M. Mcconnell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The analysis of samples recovered from the abdominal area of an articulated tapir from the Late Miocene (4.5-7 million bp) Gray Fossil Site, revealed a rich palyno-fauna comprised of about 94% egg/oocyst-like structures and 6% pollen and other palynomorphs. In addition, a tight grouping of six hickory nuts (Carya) was recovered from the same area suggesting that the samples represent the abdominal contents. The analysis of a sample from immediately outside the tapir produced a sample with 98% pollen and less than 0.5% egg-like structures. The size, shape, and general morphology of egg-like structures were analyzed with light …

Simultaneous Optimization Of Macronutrient Factors In Plant Tissue Culture Using Turmeric (Curcuma Longa L.) As A Model, Sean Halloran May 2011

Simultaneous Optimization Of Macronutrient Factors In Plant Tissue Culture Using Turmeric (Curcuma Longa L.) As A Model, Sean Halloran

All Theses

Murashige and Skoog 1962 performed one-factor-at-a-time (OFAT) experimentation in order to regenerate tobacco callus on semi-solid agar medium. This work became an established medium for tissue culture micropropagation and experimentation. Micropropagation is done in niche markets with herbaceous perennials, among other crops, and the optimization of various inputs to produce maximal responses is a necessary step towards process development. This current study of macronutrient factors simultaneously altered media volume, amount of tissue (plants per vessel), sucrose, nitrogen (as NO3- and NH4+ ions), and K+ in a d-optimal design space with only 55 experimental units (including 5 true replicates). The first …

United States Food Law Update: The Fda Food Safety Modernization Act, Obesity And Deceptive Labeling Enforcement, A. Bryan Endres, Nicholas R. Johnson

Journal of Food Law & Policy

The long-awaited enactment of the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), the most significant amendment to the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act in several decades, provides the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) with significantly enhanced jurisdiction to close some of the gaps in the domestic food safety system. The enhanced FDA authority, however, will have little impact on the shared governance system at the federal level that involves multiple agencies, as the Act does not address the U.S. General Accounting Office's (GAO) repeated calls for consolidation of the fragmented federal food safety system. Rather, the Act perpetuates the division …

Communication Barriers Between Providers And Parents Of Adhd Adolescent Patients Who Use Complementary And Alternative Medicine, Angela Sietz

Theses and Dissertations

There is increased use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms in children and adolescents. Some of the most common types of CAM used in ADHD include: modified diet, vitamins/and or minerals, dietary supplements, aromatherapy and chiropractic care. Many parents/patients do not share their use of CAM with their provider. This inadequate communication between parents and health care providers can be dangerous. This paper addresses the prevalence of ADHD, the types of CAM being used and discusses evidence in support of these therapies. Communication between patients and providers regarding the use of CAM …

Perceived Confirmation And Disconfirmation In Community College Online Distance-Learning Courses, Carissa Michelle Simmons May 2011

Perceived Confirmation And Disconfirmation In Community College Online Distance-Learning Courses, Carissa Michelle Simmons

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

This qualitative study sought to discover how interpersonal confirmation and disconfirmation are perceived in online distance learning courses at the community college level by determining the specific communication teacher behaviors that cause confirmation and disconfirmation to be perceived by their students. The philosophical framework for this study stemmed from Martin Buber’s (1965) concept of the “interhuman.” The particular theories that grounded this study are the symbolic interactionism theory and two theories of interpersonal confirmation by Sieburg (1973) and Larson (1976). The data for this study was obtained through focus groups, individual interviews, and open-ended surveys. The results show that confirmation …

Potential Benefits From Interacting With Nature: A Look At Outdoor Education For Children, Katie Webster May 2011

Potential Benefits From Interacting With Nature: A Look At Outdoor Education For Children, Katie Webster

Psychology and Child Development

With the increase of a fast paced lifestyle and more technology centered activities, children are spending an increased amount of time indoors.  A decreased interaction with the natural environment is alarming to many researchers, including Richard Louv who has defined this lack of interaction as Nature Deficit Disorder, a disorder that may result in a diminished use of the senses, increased amount of attention difficulties and higher rates of physical and emotional illness.  By engaging with nature, children will have the potential of concentrating and performing better within the classroom, to be more creative, are more cognitively and intellectually developed …

The Effects Of Curcumin On Body Composition Of Patients With Advanced Pancreatic Cancer, Henrique A. Parsons Md May 2011

The Effects Of Curcumin On Body Composition Of Patients With Advanced Pancreatic Cancer, Henrique A. Parsons Md

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Cachexia is very common among patients with advanced pancreatic cancer and is a marker of poor prognosis. Weight loss in cachexia is due to both adipose and muscle compartments, and sarcopenia (severe muscle depletion) is associated with worse outcomes. Curcumin has shown a myriad of biological effects, including anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory. The ability of curcumin to attenuate cachexia and muscle loss has been tested in animal models, with conflicting results so far. The hypothesis of this study was that patients with advanced pancreatic cancer treated with curcumin for two months have less fat and muscle loss as compared to matched …

Immune Modulation Of The Mycobacterium Tuberculosis Granulomatous Response, Kerry J. Welsh May 2011

Immune Modulation Of The Mycobacterium Tuberculosis Granulomatous Response, Kerry J. Welsh

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major public health burden. The immunocompetant host responds to Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) infection by the formation of granulomas, which initially prevent uncontrolled bacterial proliferation and dissemination. However, increasing evidence suggests that granuloma formation promotes persistence of the organism by physically separating infected cells from effector lymphocytes and by inducing a state of non-replicating persistence in the bacilli, making them resistant to the action of antibiotics. Additionally, immune-mediated tissue destruction likely facilitates disease transmission. The granulomatous response is in part due to mycobacterial glycolipid antigens. Therefore, studies were first undertaken to determine the innate mechanisms of mycobacterial …
