Background: Biological invasions are fundamentally biogeographic processes that occur over large spatial scales. Interactions with soil microbes can have strong impacts on plant invasions, but how these interactions vary among areas where introduced species are highly invasive vs. naturalized is still unknown. In this study, we examined biogeographic variation in plant-soil microbe interactions of a globally invasive weed, Centaurea solstitialis (yellow starthistle). We addressed the following questions (1) Is Centaurea released from natural enemy pressure from soil microbes in introduced regions? and (2) Is variation in plant-soil feedbacks associated with variation in Centaurea's invasive success? Methodology/Principal Findings: We conducted greenhouse …

Social Benefits Of Niche Agricultural Products: The Case Of Pasture-Based Beef In Appalachia Part 1: The Conceptual Framework, Inocencio Rodriguez, Gerard D'Souza, Alan R. Collins, Tim Phipps
Regional Research Institute Working Papers
Niche agricultural products are growing in economic importance. This growth is driven mainly by the increased demand for more healthy, nutritious, fresh and locally grown food products. There is obviously a potential increase in private benefits to producers/landowners as a result of increased production of the underlying crops to satisfy this demand. What is less obvious is the potential to also generate increased social benefits, particularly as they relate to energy conservation, alternative energy or biogas development and carbon sequestration. In other words, calories and kilo-calories are becoming more linked. The objective of this analysis is to develop a conceptual …

Assessing Microbial Diversity Through Nucleotide Variation, Ahmet Eren
Assessing Microbial Diversity Through Nucleotide Variation, Ahmet Eren
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Microbes are the most abundant and most diverse form of life on Earth, constituting the largest portion of the total biomass of the entire planet. They are present in every niche in nature, including very extreme environments, and they govern biogeochemical transformations in ecosystems. The human body is home to a diverse assemblage of microbial species as well. In fact, the number of microbial cells in the gastrointestinal tract, oral cavity, skin, airway passages and urogenital system is approximately an order of magnitude greater than the number of cells that make up the human body itself, and changes in the …
Determining Biological Roles Of Four Unique Vernicia Fordii Acyl-Coa Binding Proteins, Steven Pastor
Determining Biological Roles Of Four Unique Vernicia Fordii Acyl-Coa Binding Proteins, Steven Pastor
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
High-value industrial oils are essential for many processes and have great economic and environmental impacts. The tung tree produces a high-value seed oil. Approximately 80% of tung oil is α-eleostearic acid, which has a high degree of unsaturation thus giving it properties as a drying oil. The identification of the biological components in tung is imperative to further the knowledge of its processes. Four unique tung acyl-CoA binding proteins, VfACBP3a, VfACBP3b, VfACBP4, and VfACBP6 were identified and the genes encoding them were cloned and analyzed to determine their biological roles. The VfACBPs were observed to be similar to other organisms' …
The Regulation Of Nap4 In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Denise Capps
The Regulation Of Nap4 In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Denise Capps
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The CCAAT binding-factor (CBF) is a transcriptional activator conserved in eukaryotes. The CBF in Saccharomyces cerevisiae is a multimeric heteromer termed the Hap2/3/4/5 complex. Hap4, which contains the activation domain of the complex, is also the regulatory subunit and is known to be transcriptionally controlled by carbon sources. However, little is known about Hap4 regulation. In this report, I identify mechanisms by which Hap4 is regulated, including: (1) transcriptional regulation via two short upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5' leader sequence of HAP4 mRNA; (2) proteasome-dependent degradation of Hap4; and (3) identification of two negative regulators of HAP4 …
Counselor Perceptions Of The Efficacy Of Training And Implementation Of Self-Care Strategies Related To Trauma Work, Leslie Midtbo Culver
Counselor Perceptions Of The Efficacy Of Training And Implementation Of Self-Care Strategies Related To Trauma Work, Leslie Midtbo Culver
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Various forms of trauma are regularly reported across the spectrum of counseling settings and the potential negative psychological effects on counselors who are repeatedly exposed to traumatic material are well documented. However, many researchers suggest that vicarious traumatization can be prevented and mitigated with personal and professional self-care strategies. The American Counseling Association (ACA) Code of Ethics indicates that counselors have a professional responsibility to engage in self-care activities, as efforts to ensure the psychological health of counselors will have a direct effect on their ability to help clients. The purpose of this mixed-method, descriptive, correlational research was to explore …

Exposure To A Natural Disaster (Hurricane Ike) And Children's Diet And Activity Levels, Betty Sao-Hou Lai
Exposure To A Natural Disaster (Hurricane Ike) And Children's Diet And Activity Levels, Betty Sao-Hou Lai
Open Access Dissertations
Objective: Utilizing a conceptual model of the impact of disasters on children╒s functioning, the current study examined unhealthy diet and sedentary activity levels of children exposed to Hurricane Ike. Exposure stressors (perceived and actual life threat) and recovery stressors (hurricane-related stressors and major life events), were hypothesized to be associated with unhealthy diet and sedentary activity. Exposure stressors, recovery stressors, and child demographic characteristics were also expected to be associated with posttraumatic stress (PTS) symptoms. It also was predicted that physical activity would attenuate the relationship between recovery stressors and children╒s PTS symptoms. Finally, the feasibility of collecting health behavior …

Childhood Meat Eating And Inflammatory Markers: The Guangzhou Biobank Cohort Study, Mary Schooling, Chao Q. Jiang, Tai H. Lam, W. S. Zhang, Kar Keung Cheng, Gabriel M. Leung
Publications and Research
Background
We hypothesized that socio-economic development could, via nutritionally driven levels of pubertal sex-steroids, promote a pro-inflammatory state among men but not women in developing countries. We tested this hypothesis, using recalled childhood meat eating as a proxy for childhood nutrition, in southern China.
Methods
We used multivariable linear regression in the Guangzhou Biobank Cohort Study phase 3 (2006-8) to examine the adjusted associations of recalled childhood meat eating, <1/week (n = 5,023), about once per week (n = 3,592) and almost daily (n = 1,252), with white blood cell count and its differentials among older (≥50 years) men (n = 2,498) and women (n = 7,369).
Results
Adjusted for age, childhood socio-economic position, education and smoking, childhood meat eating had sex-specific associations with white blood cell count and lymphocyte count, but not granulocyte count. Men with childhood …

The formation of appressoria, specialized plant penetration structures of Magnaporthe oryzae, is regulated by the MST11-MST7-PMK1 MAP kinase cascade. One of its downstream transcription factor, MST12, is important for penetration and invasive growth but dispensable for appressorium formation. To identify additional downstream targets that are regulated by Pmk1, in this study we performed phosphorylation assays with a protein microarray composed of 573M. oryzae transcription factor (TF) genes. Three of the TF genes phosphorylated by Pmk1 in vitro were further analyzed by coimmunoprecipitation assays. One of them, MoSFL1, was found to interact with …

Extra TFIIIC (ETC) sites are chromosomal locations bound in vivo by the RNA polymerase III (Pol III) transcription factor III C (TF IIIC) complex, but are not necessarily associated with Pol III transcription. Although the location of ETC sequences are conserved in budding yeast, and similar sites are found in other organisms, their functions are largely unstudied. One such site, ETC6 in Saccharomyces cerevisiae, lies upstream of TFC6, a gene encoding a subunit of the TFIIIC complex itself. Promoter analysis shows that the ETC6 B-box sequence is involved in autoregulation of the TFC6 promoter. Mutation of ETC6 increases TFC6 mRNA …
A Comparative Analysis Of Legislative And Policy Support Of Indigenous Cultural Transmission In Alaska, Canada, And Azerbaijan, Löki Gale Tobin
A Comparative Analysis Of Legislative And Policy Support Of Indigenous Cultural Transmission In Alaska, Canada, And Azerbaijan, Löki Gale Tobin
Rural Development
Does federal recognition of indigenous self-determination lead to federal support of indigenous cultural transmission? This thesis used a multiple-case analysis to answer this question. Research assessed the impact federal and non-federal legislation has had on indigenous cultural transmission in Alaska, Canada, and Azerbaijan respectively. Findings demonstrated that after federal recognition of indigenous self-determination, cultural transmission programs increased in Alaska and Canada. In Azerbaijan, where no such recognition exists, indigenous groups continue to face discrimination and national policies that negatively impact cultural transmission activities. Without federal recognition of indigenous self-determination, indigenous groups worldwide face situations hostile to their cultural survival.

Energetics And Space Use Of Female Moose During Winter, Benjamin Robert Kraft
Energetics And Space Use Of Female Moose During Winter, Benjamin Robert Kraft
Biological Sciences
Space use and resource selection are processes linked by habitat availability that have direct consequences to fitness. Knowledge of such processes allows comprehension of wildlife-habitat relationships, which can improve the efficacy of wildlife management programs. I investigated energetic and space use parameters of a population of female moose wintering in two adjacent, but distinct, landscape types (lowlands and mountains) on the Kenai Peninsula, AK, USA. I also evaluated differences between four home range models. I found that mountain females started winter in better condition, but used fat reserves at a higher rate than lowland females resulting in similar body condition …
