Contribution Of The Rv1985c Transcriptional Regulator To Mycobacterium Tuberculosis Intracellular Adaptation., Nicholas B. Wantland 1984-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Mycobacterium tuberculosis causes the often-fatal infectious disease Tuberculosis, and infects approximately one third of the world's population. Gaining a better understanding of how these bacteria regulate gene expression for intracellular survival will likely aid in developing ways to reduce disease. Studies of bacterial RNA expression in experimentally infected primary human macrophages indicated open reading frame Rv1985c, encoding a putative transcriptional regulator, may contribute to intracellular survival. Comparison of a strain constitutively expressing Rv1985c and the isogenic wildtype parent by array hybridization identified genes potentially regulated by Rv1985c. These included a group encoding factors likely relevant to cell wall remodeling, particularly …

Media Portrayals Of Athletes In Televised Sports: A Content Analysis Of Ice Hockey Broadcasts During The 2010 Winter Olympic Games, Heather A. Muir
Dissertations
The Winter Olympic Games are probably the best time for casual sports fans to watch women's ice hockey at its finest, and the commentary of sports broadcasters can greatly shape viewers' impressions of the sporting event. This study explored ways in which the NBC broadcasts of the 2010 Winter Olympic ice hockey tournament differed based on the sex of the ice hockey players including differences in production value, the use of gendered language, and the commentators' portrayals of female and male ice hockey players. The primary method for ascertaining differences was content analysis using a mixed-methods approach to analyze the …

Evaluating The Role Of Perceived Access To Support And School Safety In Adolescent Exposure To Trauma: A Mixed Methods Study, Amanda H. Stoeckel
Dissertations
This mixed methods study evaluated lifetime trauma exposure, protective factors, and current psychological functioning among 78 adolescents from two public middle schools in rural and suburban communities. One hundred percent of adolescents reported experiencing at least one traumatic event at some point during their lives. After controlling for gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and special education/general education placement, more trauma exposure was associated with more post-traumatic stress and depressive symptoms, more teacher-rated externalizing behaviors, and lower teacher-rated adaptive functioning. Perceived access to support and factors of school safety demonstrated protective effects in the relationship between trauma exposure and domains of psychological …

How Do Human Disturbance, Beach Characteristics, And Coastal Engineering Affect Snowy Plover (Charadrius Alexandrinus) Habitat Selection On The Florida Panhandle?, Alyson F. Webber
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Snowy plovers (Charadrius alexandrinus) are listed as threatened by the State of Florida, and have been a species of growing concern among wildlife management agencies. The population of snowy plovers breeding along the Florida Panhandle has a patchy distribution, and large stretches of private and public land go virtually unused by plovers. Further, there is a strong negative correlation between coastal engineering projects and snowy plover nest site use. The relationship between coastal engineering and snowy plover nesting distribution is unclear, however, because most engineering projects have occurred on developed beaches with high human use. My objectives were …

An Evaluation Of West Virginia's Non-Industrial Private Forest Landowner Participation In Conservation Easements, Matt D. Oliver
An Evaluation Of West Virginia's Non-Industrial Private Forest Landowner Participation In Conservation Easements, Matt D. Oliver
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Private forestland is an important resource to West Virginia. Timber production is vital to the state's economy and forestland is important for wildlife habitat, recreation and healthy watersheds. Non-Industrial Private Forest (NIPF) landowners control the majority of this commodity within the state and throughout the country. Development, fragmentation and parcelization are growing threats to landscape integrity and forest composition. Conservation easements are defined as contracts between private sector landowners and accredited institutions that preserve the conservation value of the land. They have become a popular land management tool in recent years. Conservation easements have also been widely accepted and utilized …
The Ticket To Easy Street? The Financial Consequences Of Winning The Lottery, Scott Hankins, Mark Hoekstra
The Ticket To Easy Street? The Financial Consequences Of Winning The Lottery, Scott Hankins, Mark Hoekstra
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
This paper examines whether giving large cash transfers to financially distressed people causes them to avoid bankruptcy. A comparison of Florida Lottery winners who randomly received $50,000 to $150,000 to small winners indicates that such transfers only postpone bankruptcy rather than prevent it, a result inconsistent with the negative shock model of bankruptcy. Furthermore, the large winners who subsequently filed for bankruptcy had similar net assets and unsecured debt as small winners. Thus, our findings suggest that skepticism regarding the long-term impact of cash transfers may be warranted.

Persuasive Packaging: An Eye-Tracking Approach To Design, Rupert Hurley
Persuasive Packaging: An Eye-Tracking Approach To Design, Rupert Hurley
All Dissertations
This dissertation details the development of a consensus-centered strategy for managing packaging design projects that enables designers from various fields to participate (seriously play) in the development process. The Work/Flow developed was quantified though a series of empirical eye-tracking experiments to determine if objects produced through the system resulted in longer fixation durations than the control. It was determined that packages developed through the Work/Flow were significantly more persuasive than the control (P < 0.0005).
The second experiment observed the effectiveness of designs produced through the Work/Flow in respect to the competitive retail array. Out of three product categories tested, one package …
Biohydrogenation Of Docosahexaenoic Acid, Catherine Klein
Biohydrogenation Of Docosahexaenoic Acid, Catherine Klein
All Dissertations
Pathways of docosahexaenoic (DHA) biohydrogenation are not known; however, DHA is metabolized by ruminal microorganisms. The addition of DHA to the rumen alters the fatty acid profile of the rumen and milk and leads to increased trans-18:1 isomers, particularly trans-11 18:1 and 22 carbon fatty acids. This study included four in vitro experiments to identify if these are produced from DHA or if they come from other sources that are affected by DHA. In each experiment, ruminal microorganisms collected from a lactating Holstein cow were incubated in batch cultures for 0, 6, 24, and 48h and a uniformly 13C DHA …

Effects Of Chronic Exercise On Measures Of Body Shame In Obese College-Aged Individuals, Margaret J. Morrissy
Research Papers
The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effects of a 6-week structured exercise program on levels of body shame in obese college-aged individuals. It was hypothesized that participants would display lower levels of body-shame, higher levels of body-surveillance and body-control following the exercise intervention. It was also hypothesized that participants would have higher levels of self-determination upon completion of the program. Through a mixed methodology of open-ended, in-depth interviews and surveys it was determined self-conscious emotions decrease following a 6-week exercise program and participants display improved shame-coping mechanisms.
Influence Of Vineyard Floor Management Practices On Soil Aggregate Stability, Total Soil Carbon And Grapevine Yield, Kimberly Ellen Adams
Influence Of Vineyard Floor Management Practices On Soil Aggregate Stability, Total Soil Carbon And Grapevine Yield, Kimberly Ellen Adams
Master's Theses
Soil aggregates provide pore spaces of various sizes supplying water, gases and nutrients to plant roots and microorganisms, and facilitate moisture retention and availability. Soil aggregate stability is indicative of soil biological and structural health, and is increased by soil carbon derived from plant roots and the soil microbial biomass. Aggregate stability and soil carbon can be enhanced by increasing organic matter through compost additions or by planting cover crops. Additionally, aggregate stability is enhanced by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) that form a symbiotic association with plant roots, and consolidate soil particles into aggregates through hyphal networks and through the …

The Effect Of Exercise On Cardiac Function And Doxorubicin Accumulation In Left Ventricular Tissue Of Rats, Brock Thomas Jensen
The Effect Of Exercise On Cardiac Function And Doxorubicin Accumulation In Left Ventricular Tissue Of Rats, Brock Thomas Jensen
Dissertations
Doxorubicin (DOX) is an anthracycline antibiotic that has cytotoxic actions. The therapeutic use of DOX to treat a wide array of cancers is limited by a dose-dependent cardiotoxicity. Although DOX is known to have several adverse side-effects, acute and chronic cardiotoxicity have received the most attention as both may eventually lead to heart failure. While exercise has been shown to protect against DOX cardiotoxicity, a clear and consistent mechanism to explain its cardioprotective effects is lacking. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) is a valuable instrument that can be used to evaluate cardiac DOX accumulation. We hypothesized that a reduction in …

Ecologically-Based Manipulation Practices For Managing Bromus Tectorum-Infested Rangelands, Beth Fowers
Ecologically-Based Manipulation Practices For Managing Bromus Tectorum-Infested Rangelands, Beth Fowers
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum) is an invasive annual grass common in several semiarid plant communities in the western U.S. B. tectorum presence increases fire frequency and size, reducing species diversity, and leading to annual species-dominated systems with inconsistent livestock forage potential and degraded wildlife habitat value. Most efforts to manage B. tectorum-dominated rangelands have focused on controlling the plant itself rather than addressing the causes of vegetation change. An alternative approach, ecologically-based invasive plant management (EBIPM), identifies treatments that can alter factors associated with the causes of succession, leading to a more desirable vegetation state. This study utilized …
