What Is The Impact Of Gender-Responsive Treatment On Women Offenders?, Melody N. Joiner Oct 2011

What Is The Impact Of Gender-Responsive Treatment On Women Offenders?, Melody N. Joiner

Professional Projects

This study uses research literature and results from a qualitative project to discuss how gender-responsive programming would be beneficial to women offenders, both while incarcerated and upon returning to the community. Research proves that women offenders are different from their male counterparts regarding life factors and pathways to crime. The literature identifies how female criminality is heavily influenced by the life circumstances and experiences of women offenders. Recent studies stress the importance of considering the demographics and history of the female offender population, as well as how life factors impact women’s patterns of offending. Most women in the criminal justice …

First As Tragedy, Then As Farce - Slavoj Žižek, Edward Sandowski Oct 2011

First As Tragedy, Then As Farce - Slavoj Žižek, Edward Sandowski

International Dialogue

Slavoj Žižek is a prolific, original, and formidable philosopher. His publishing habits are so productive that any discussion of a particular book is bound to be only a very partial consideration of his work and views as a whole. This applies to the present discussion of First as Tragedy, Then as Farce. The title, of course, is taken from Marx. One relevant classical passage is from the Eighteenth Brumaire: “Hegel remarks somewhere that all great events and characters of world history occur, so to speak, twice. He forgot to add: the first time as tragedy, the second time as farce.” …

Regional Differences In Fan Preferences For Minor League Hockey: The Ahl, Rodney Paul, Robert Chatt

Falk College Research Center

Regional differences in fan preferences for minor league hockey in the United States are explored using simple linear regression models. The top-level minor league for the NHL, the American Hockey League (AHL), was studied for the 2008-09 season. Key attributes with respect to attendance are studied for hockey including population, income per capita, promotions, scoring, and winning percentage. In addition, a key socio-economic variable, fighting is also investigated. Major differences are found for fan preferences across geographic regions in relation to population, income per capita, a variety of promotions, and team success. In addition, fan reaction to fighting tends to …

The Value Of Public Relations In Investor Relations: Individual Investors' Preferred Information Types, Qualities, And Sources, Timothy Penning Oct 2011

The Value Of Public Relations In Investor Relations: Individual Investors' Preferred Information Types, Qualities, And Sources, Timothy Penning

Peer Reviewed Articles

A survey targeting individual investors addressed the types, qualities, and sources of information this specific public seeks and values. In keeping with uses and gratifications theory and situational theory of problem solving, results identify specific conditions associated with investors seeking and selecting sources of information that would be considered public relations content, validating public relations and investor relations communication as having value to a specific set of individual investors. This study provides evidence that public relations communications content has as muck or more value than information from the news media or other sources in an investor relations context.

Assessing Edad Candidate's Leadership Growth And Perceptions: Ethical Principles And Acting Fairly, Jeanne L. Surface Oct 2011

Assessing Edad Candidate's Leadership Growth And Perceptions: Ethical Principles And Acting Fairly, Jeanne L. Surface

Educational Leadership Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

Moral and ethical leadership has evolved over the years, and while early standards were often religious in nature, many standards remain. Every year principals are terminated for immoral activities, failure to assume leadership obligations, or breaches of ethics. Because of the critical role that principals play in school and community leadership, preparation programs should teach and assess principal candidates' dispositions such as fairness and integrity. This paper is an analysis of educational administration student growth using an electronic portfolio system to measure self-perceptions of readiness to implement the Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium (ISLLC) Standards and self-perceptions of dispositions of …

A Domain Specific Language For Enterprise Grade Cloud-Mobile Hybrid Applications, Ajith H. Ranabahu, E. Michael Maximilien, Amit P. Sheth, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan

Kno.e.sis Publications

Cloud computing has changed the technology landscape by offering flexible and economical computing resources to the masses. However, vendor lock-in makes the migration of applications and data across clouds an expensive proposition. The lock-in is especially serious when considering the new technology trend of combining cloud with mobile devices.

In this paper, we present a domain specific language (DSL) that is purposely created for generating hybrid applications spanning across mobile devices as well as computing clouds. We propose a model-driven development process that makes use of a DSL to provide sufficient programming abstractions over both cloud and mobile features. We …

Personalized Filtering Of The Twitter Stream, Pavan Kapanipathi, Fabrizio Orlandi, Amit P. Sheth, Alexandre Passant

Kno.e.sis Publications

With the rapid growth in users on social networks, there is a corresponding increase in user-generated content, in turn resulting in information overload. On Twitter, for example, users tend to receive uninterested information due to their non-overlapping interests from the people whom they follow. In this paper we present a Semantic Web approach to filter public tweets matching interests from personalized user profiles. Our approach includes automatic generation of multi-domain and personalized user profiles, filtering Twitter stream based on the generated profiles and delivering them in real-time. Given that users interests and personalization needs change with time, we also discuss …

Cdc42 Regulates Extracellular Matrix Remodeling In Three Dimensions*, Nisha S. Sipes, Benjamin Feng, Fukun Guo, Hyung-Ok Lee, Fu-Sheng Chou, Jonathan Cheng, James Mulloy, Yi Zheng

Peer Reviewed Articles

Extracellular matrix (ECM) actively participates in normal cell regulation and in the process of tumor progression. The Rho GTPase Cdc42 has been shown to regulate cell-ECM interaction in conventional two-dimensional culture conditions by using dominant mutants of Cdc42 in immortalized cell lines that may introduce nonspecific effects. Here, we employ three-dimensional culture systems for conditional gene targeted primary mouse embryonic fibroblasts that better simulate the reciprocal and adaptive interactions between cells and surrounding matrix to define the role of Cdc42 signaling pathways in ECM organization. Cdc42 deficiency leads to a defect in global cell-matrix interactions reflected by a decrease in …

Myths, Emily Zeller Oct 2011

Myths, Emily Zeller

Theses

In this thesis I address a personal relationship with nature, femininity, and coming-of-age in a patriarchal family through videos that rely on a synthesized definition of myth to create multi-layered meaning with roots in the greater feminine discourse. I create my own unique interpretation of myth by combining elements of traditional Greek mythology, semiotic mythology, and the art and poems centered around the myth of the female experience. Imbuing my videos with this mythic quality allows the objects and actions depicted to transcend their signifiers, birthing multi-layered meaning and encouraging a closer examination and personal connection with the viewer. My …

Design Of Passive Suspension System With Non-Linear Springs Using B-Spline Collocation Method, Rahul Jhaveri Oct 2011

Design Of Passive Suspension System With Non-Linear Springs Using B-Spline Collocation Method, Rahul Jhaveri

Theses

The issue of vibration isolation challenges engineers' designs across the engineering spectrum. From an engineering standpoint, vibration control impacts the fields of transportation, manufacturing, construction and mechanical design. Dynamic systems produce vibrations for various reasons i.e. rotating unbalanced masses (high speed turbines); inertia of reciprocating components (internal combustion engines); irregular rolling contact (automobiles) or induced eddy current (locomotives) vibrations. In most cases, vibrations cause only physical discomfort and/or loss of accuracy. But in extreme cases, transmitted forces may cause a body to undergo high amplitude resonant vibrations, leading to high cyclic stresses and imminent fatigue failure resulting in a catastrophic …

Visualizing History: Using Museum Skills To Teach Information Literacy To Undergraduates, Sandra Roff Oct 2011

Visualizing History: Using Museum Skills To Teach Information Literacy To Undergraduates, Sandra Roff

Publications and Research

Baruch College began an information studies minor that reinforces the principles of information literacy. However, it did not employ the visual to teach information literacy skills. To fill this gap, a new course, using the process of researching and preparing an exhibit script to teach undergraduates information literacy skills, was developed. In this course students have the opportunity to become creative, while at the same time learning the organizational and research skills needed to compose exhibit proposals, write labels and press releases and finally to produce exhibit script.

The Way Forward: Moving From The Post-Bubble, Post-Bust Economy To Renewed Growth And Competitiveness, Daniel Alpert, Robert C. Hockett, Nouriel Roubini Oct 2011

The Way Forward: Moving From The Post-Bubble, Post-Bust Economy To Renewed Growth And Competitiveness, Daniel Alpert, Robert C. Hockett, Nouriel Roubini

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

We argue that the U.S. economy is presently mired in a particularly tenacious, Fisher-style debt-deflation rooted in long term secular trends in the domestic and global economies. Global productive capacity has steadily outpaced global absorptive capacity for several decades now, and the latter will not catch up with the former for a good many years to come -- if ever. In order to avert long-term Japanese-style stagnation at home and quite possibly slowdown and slump worldwide, the U.S. will have both (a) to eliminate private sector debt-overhang from 'both sides' of the same, and (b) to act in concert with …

Negotiating Tensions Across Organizational Boundaries: Communication And Refugee Resettlement Organizations, Sarah Steimel Oct 2011

Negotiating Tensions Across Organizational Boundaries: Communication And Refugee Resettlement Organizations, Sarah Steimel

Department of Communication Studies: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Voluntary non-profit organizations play a critical role in mediating the transition of refugees into their new host communities in the United States. Furthermore, mediation is fundamentally a communicative phenomenon, as social services are provided in through communication between nonprofit workers and clients. Critically, for voluntary mediating organizations to create empowering spaces for refugees, communication is central. In this study, I emphasize the tensional processes inherent to mediating interactions and explore how refugee resettlement organizational staff members and refugee-clients describe and manage the communicative tensions which emerge when they interact with one another.

I conducted eighteen in-depth interviews with fifteen organizational …

Citation Advantage Of Open Access Legal Scholarship, James M. Donovan, Carol A. Watson Oct 2011

Citation Advantage Of Open Access Legal Scholarship, James M. Donovan, Carol A. Watson

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

In this study focusing on the impact of open access on legal scholarship, the authors examine open access articles from three journals at the University of Georgia School of Law and confirm that legal scholarship freely available via open access improves an article’s research impact. Open access legal scholarship—which today appears to account for almost half of the output of law faculties—can expect to receive fifty-eight percent more citations than non–open access writings of similar age from the same venue.
