Propaganda And The 21st Century Student, Miguel Martinez-Saenz , Provost, Academic Affairs, Tammy M. Proctor

Administrators/Executives/Staff Scholarship

This short piece provides a way of thinking about the Enlightenment’s legacy and the strength of modern propaganda in order to enable world history teachers to use these themes in their classes, both for teaching history and for helping students to reflect on their own lives. The authors provide background on the ideas of 1930s critical theorists and their impact on the interwar period, then suggest practical ways that world history instructors (in high schools and universities) can use these insights in developing lectures, lesson plans, and assignments for their classrooms.

Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences Faculty Publications

Background

Magnolol, a plant lignan isolated from the bark and seed cones of Magnolia officinalis, has been shown to have chemopreventive effects on chemically-induced skin cancer development. The objectives of this investigation are to study the anticarcinogenic effects of magnolol on UVB-induced skin tumor development in SKH-1 mice, a model relevant to humans, and determine the possible role of apoptosis and cell cycle arrest involved in the skin tumor development.

Methods

UVB-induced skin carcinogenesis model in SKH-1 mice was used for determining the preventive effects of magnolol on skin cancer development. Western blottings and flow cytometric analysis were used …

The Impact Of Computer Self-Efficacy And Technology Dependence On Computer-Related Technostress: A Social Cognitive Theory Perspective, Qin Shu, Qiang Tu, Kanliang Wang Oct 2011

The Impact Of Computer Self-Efficacy And Technology Dependence On Computer-Related Technostress: A Social Cognitive Theory Perspective, Qin Shu, Qiang Tu, Kanliang Wang

Articles

Professionals and end users of computers often experience being constantly surrounded by modern technology. One side effect of modern technology is termed technostress, which refers to the “negative impact on attitudes, thoughts, behaviors, or body physiology that is caused either directly or indirectly by technology” (Well and Rosen, 1997). Based on social cognitive theory, this study developed a conceptual model in which computer-related technostress was studied as consequences of computer self-efficacy and technology dependence. Results show that (a) employees with higher level of computer self-efficacy have lower level of computer-related technostress, (b) employees with higher level of technology dependence have …

Watching The Clock: Challenges For The World's Fastest Growing Economies, Singapore Management University

Perspectives@SMU

Double-digit economic growths that are set to propel it to the second biggest economy in the world, overtaking Japan, has made people see China’s rise as remarkable. So confident are the pundits that they have dubbed this to be an “Asian century” and many more are urging for the world to learn Chinese in anticipation of a new world order. But, to renowned historian Wang Gungwu, this fast-paced growth associated with China is not something that is peculiar to the Asian giant only.

Time seems to move a little faster in economies with greater wealth, higher education and more demanding jobs; sometimes driven by personal ambitions to achieve more, or perhaps because society demands it. Speaking at a Wee Kim Wee Centre Lunchtime Seminar, renowned China expert Wang Gungwu says that life on the fast lane has become so ingrained in our thinking of modern societies that it is no longer questioned but accepted as a condition of development: Speed up or get left behind.

There are many ways to grow a business in a competitive market. For Procter & Gamble, the parent company of renowned brands such as Gillette, Olay and Pampers, strategic innovation through market research is crucial. To succeed in Asia, however, the company will have to get creative, says Medhee Jarumaneeroj, P&G Asia's male grooming marketing and external relations lead at a SMU Centre of Marketing Excellence lecture.

Designing Low-Cost Mobile Websites For Libraries, Tiffini Travis, Chee Hsien Aaron (Zheng Zhixian) Tay

Research Collection Library

As smartphone ownership rises, usage patterns are expanding. Libraries face an increasing demand for online content delivered in a mobile compatible format while being constrained by financial and staffing limitations. Solutions are readily available through free and low-cost products to create mobile web pages and existing design models from which to draw inspiration. Platform-specific apps can easily support the kinds of content most commonly delivered on library mobile pages: basic contact information and outbound links to the catalog, databases, and other resources. Two software platforms for creating simple pages were tested, the free software from WordPress with mobile detection formatting …

The Social Networking Adoption Matrix (Sam) Prototype: Helping Healthcare Organizations Effectively Choose Social Networking Technologies, Alan Rea, Robert Landeros, Tristan Stempien

Transactions of the International Conference on Health Information Technology Advancement

Healthcare organizations looking to increase communication and educational offerings to their community, providers, and healthcare consumers need to implement social networking technologies. However, without a thorough needs analysis a healthcare organization may waste valuable limited resources with very little return on investment. In this paper, the authors discuss preliminary research targeted to help organizations adopt relevant technologies using a Social Networking Adoption Matrix (SAM). SAM helps organizations decide which social networking technology categories are necessary to meet their strategic goals via the Social Network Adoption Matrix Expert System (SAMES).
