Viewing The Public Sphere With Influentials And Citizens, Leo Wayne Jeffres, Guowei Jian, Jae-Won Lee, C. Ellen Connally, Josie El Seikali

Communication Faculty Publications

The currently popular emphasis on democratic discussion in the “public sphere” often is critically viewed by observers commenting on issues of participation, empowerment, and efficacy without input from influentials, whose voices often are the content of public debates. Habermas was critical of the quality of democratic discourse, arguing for an “ideal speech situation” where participants are free to question all proposals; introduce proposals; and express their attitudes, wishes, and needs. This article examines perceptions of the climate of communication in the public sphere by influentials and the general public of a major urban area.

Prophet Of The Electric Age: Marshall Mcluhan’S Post-Curial Catholicism, Michael W. Higgins Oct 2011

Prophet Of The Electric Age: Marshall Mcluhan’S Post-Curial Catholicism, Michael W. Higgins

Mission & Culture Publications

The author explores the Catholicism of Herbert Marshall McLuhan, a Canadian literary scholar and communications theorist. The author notes that McLuhan's Catholicism seldom surfaces in the writings of his biographers. Higgins believes McLuhan's Catholicisim deserves a fuller exploration since faith was profoundly constitutive in his life and thought. The author also claims that McLuhan's reasons for conversion differentiated him from the conventional intellectual.

Studies have shown that HIV-infected patients develop neurocognitive disorders characterized by neuronal dysfunction. The lack of productive infection of neurons by HIV suggests that viral and cellular proteins, with neurotoxic activities, released from HIV-1-infected target cells can cause this neuronal deregulation. The viral protein R (Vpr), a protein encoded by HIV-1, has been shown to alter the expression of various important cytokines and inflammatory proteins in infected and uninfected cells; however the mechanisms involved remain unclear. Using a human neuronal cell line, we found that Vpr can be taken up by neurons causing: (i) deregulation of calcium homeostasis, (ii) endoplasmic …

Instructional Practices For Teaching Systems Concepts, Dario Nardi Oct 2011

Instructional Practices For Teaching Systems Concepts, Dario Nardi

Systems Science Friday Noon Seminar Series

15-minute presentations on the following three topics:

I. Live Group Simulations Promote Learning of Systems Concepts
Systems concepts such as attractors, bifurcation, chaotic behavior, and emergence may be hard for learners to grasp. Even when they follow a lecture or demonstration, they may wonder about practical use. How might we more effectively convey systems concepts? For fourteen years, I have used group activities to stimulate learning of systems concepts and multi-agent behavior in general. The activity might involve as few as ten participants or 150-plus. Whether you have 10 minutes, 90 minutes, or 4 weeks, there is an effective …

Synthesis, Structural, Optical And Mechanical Characterization Of Srb2O4 Nanorods, Rui Li, Lihong Bao, Xiaodong Li

Faculty Publications

Single crystalline strontium borate (SrB2O4) nanorods were synthesized for the first time via a facile sol–gel route at low temperature. The SrB2O4 nanorods have a good crystalline nature with the growth direction along the [511] orientation and they are transparent from the ultraviolet to the visible regimes. Nanoscale three-point bending tests were performed directly on individual nanorods to probe their mechanical properties using an atomic force microscope. The elastic modulus of SrB2O4 nanorods was measured to be 158.2 ± 2.8 GPa, exhibiting a significant increase compared with other borate nanostructures …

Total Synthesis Of 4'-Ester Resveratrol Analogs And 8.9-Amido Geldanamycin Analog And Toward The Total Synthesis Of (-)-Englerin A, Yong Wang

Theses and Dissertations

Total Synthesis of 4'-ester Resveratrol Analogs and 8, 9-amido Geldanamycin Analog and toward the Total Synthesis of (-)-Englerin A Yong Wang Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, BYU Doctor of Philosophy The phytoalexin resveratrol and its 4'-ester analogs have been prepared with a decarbonylative Heck reaction. The deprotecting step has been modified and improved to increase yield and avoid chromatography. A set of resveratrol analogs and resveratrol have been tested with melanoma and pancreatic cell assays. The 8, 9-amido Geldanamycin analog has been synthesized with a convergent route, involving 28 simplified steps in its longest linear sequence. Synthetic methodologies, such as …

Parathyroid Hormone And Cell Signaling In Bone Remodeling, Christina Battista Oct 2011

Parathyroid Hormone And Cell Signaling In Bone Remodeling, Christina Battista

Theses

Many mathematical models relevant to osteoporosis have been developed and studied. Although osteoclasts and osteoblasts are the crucial variables in bone resorption and bone formation, PTH can cause changes in the ratio of these cells and therefore should be studied more closely. Some of the current models for osteoporosis will be analyzed in this thesis as well as amended to account for the phenomenon that occurs with various methods of PTH administration. By administering PTH in either pulsatile or continuous doses, we obtain very different results. When administered in a continuous fashion, the body experiences a net bone loss over …

Competence-Based Profile Of Undergraduate Students In Madrid’S Universities: Differences In Terms Of The Gender And Age, Oscar García, Sara Redondo, Gema Santiago, Francisco López, Ana Cruz

Higher Learning Research Communications

The aim of this study is to corroborate whether the development of academic excellence is affected by the gender and age of students. A sample of 364 students from different universities in the Community of Madrid were administered COMPEUEM, a test that assesses the extent to which students possess eight academic competencies: communication, leadership, team work, adaptation to the changes, initiative, problem solving, decision making, organization, and planning. All students took the test on site, in the classrooms of the participating universities. The results show that older subjects score higher in the acquisition of skills than younger ones. On the …

Brief Remarks On Some Linguistic Features Of "Empathy" And "Sympathy", Emanuel E. Garcia, Md Oct 2011

Brief Remarks On Some Linguistic Features Of "Empathy" And "Sympathy", Emanuel E. Garcia, Md

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

The use of words by an individual or culture is subject to the very same psychological forces that drive man's other activities . Hence, the history of a word's usage becomes a telling record of the mental processes of its creators and users, both conscious and unconscious. Etymology, as Freud has observed in his dreambook (1900), contributes significantly to our understanding of the deeper layers of the psyche . Let us take the word "rival," for example, and see how we may make use of etymological data. It is derived from the Latin "riva lis," I which originally meant "one …

Dancing Henry Five, Office Of Arts + Cultural Programming, Peak Performances At Montclair State University

2011-2012 Expose of Global Creativity

Whether it was his smash hit Shlemiel the First or his take on Brecht in UNCIVIL WARS, award-winning auteur, director and choreographer David Gordon has lived on the cutting edge of theater for the better part of 40 years. Now, Gordon returns with a re-construction of his DANCING HENRY FIVE, a twisted look at the trials and triumphs of Shakespeare’s ultimate warrior-king. Winner of a National Endowment for the Arts American Masterpieces in Dance Award, this “post-modern strike and spin” is a fun and offbeat transformation of the play you thought you knew, featuring Karen Graham, Robert La Fosse and …
