Risk Perception Analysis Of A Small Aircraft Transportation System, David S. Ferrel, Thomas Carney, Scott R. Winter
Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering
This study examines the impact and relationship between demographic factors and risk perceptions toward Small AircraftTransportation Systems (SATS). The study included 178 participants who responded to an electronic survey administered to PurdueUniversity faculty members and to selected leaders within the Purdue Intercollegiate Athletics department. Participants were surveyed asto their demographic identities including gender, age, academic position, and aviation familiarity, as well as their perceptions of physical, financial, and status risk from a SATS program. Results of this study showed that certain demographic factors are significant predictors ofcertain SATS travel risk perceptions. Participants’ intentions to travel via SATS also are identified to …

Exploring Complex Engineering Learning Over Time With Epistemic Network Analysis, Gina Navoa Svarovsky
Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)
Recently, K-12 engineering education has received increased attention as a pathway to building stronger foundations in math andscience and introducing young people to the profession. However, the National Academy of Engineering found that many K-12engineering programs focus heavily on engineering design and science and math learning while minimizing the development ofengineering habits of mind. This narrowly-focused engineering activity can leave young people – and in particular, girls – with a limitedview of the profession. This study describes Digital Zoo, an engineering learning environment that engaged girls in authentic engineeringactivity in order to link the development of engineering skills and knowledge …
Mobile Technology Update, Debbie Ginsberg
Mobile Technology Update, Debbie Ginsberg
Presentations
In this Brown Bag, the latest updates in mobile technologies are discussed, particularly the iPhone 4S and the new Amazon Kindles. The iPhone 4S includes a full-featured voice controlled system called SIRI which will allow users to create reminders based on their location (e.g. "remind me to call Prof. Smith when I get to my office."). The newest Kindles are surprisingly affordable: the basic version is $79, while the top-of-the-line tablet is $199. What implications will these new technologies have on teaching and scholarship, and is now the best time to upgrade?

First, a new path model, including the geometrical spreading and the quality factor functions, is developed for the New Madrid seismic zone (NMSZ) using recorded small and moderate earthquakes. The database consists of 500 broadband seismograms from 63 events of magnitude Mw 2.5 to 5.2. All the broadband stations are located within the Mississippi embayment. The vertical components of the records are processed and used to define the path effect term in the frequency range of 0.2 to 30 Hz. At distances less than 70 km, the spectral amplitudes decay as R-1; between 70 and 140 km, spectral amplitudes increase …
